I am religious, I wear western clothes(albeit conservative, but still modern) and I wear no beard. I hear of many religious that simply are afraid of mingling with the rest of the secular state. But really this is the real test IMO. Go to the gym, and don't look at think things which are improper. See a woman/man with out having transgressing thoughts, that's the real challenge! I've been reading so much comment re Matisyahu and his shaving saga. JJ Gross in Jerusalem could not have summarized the situation better. I've been a big fan for so long and I feel so let down. Just watched his first interview without a beard and he seems strange in all aspects. Never have i been affected by an artist but Matisyahu symbolized in his lyrics, music and image something very powerful and his shaving off his beard despite it being an issue of facial hair has been a shock!
