1. The rotten egg
traveler ,   Ashdod   (12.18.11)
Egged has conceded to religious fanatics to fix the law in its buses Egged cares for its fried interests.Obviously it is an egg that only chicken could hatch.
2. and they call this a democracy and freedom LOL
deutronomy 28 ,   world   (12.18.11)
3. there needs to be a balance so everybody gets something
zionist forever   (12.18.11)
I am all for segregated local busses as long as its only a small handful of them that run through haredi neighborhoods national busses though which travel to different towns there should be no special treatment given. On the local routes as long as the situation is as now where the vast majority of the busses are mixed then on those busses nobody should have the right to tell anybody where to sit and if they try then it should be considered harassment and they should be kicked off the bus. There has to be a balance where neither the seculars or haredi get it all their own way. On their own local routes they should be allowed a couple of segregated busses but for the most part its luck of the draw and they sit next to whoever they sit next to.
4. A constructive idea as a solution
YS ,   Vancouver, Canada   (12.18.11)
While it is difficult to impose one's religious or moral standards on other's, those who prefer separate seating are also paying customers (whom Egged chooses to serve). Egged should schedule certain buses with separate seating and suggest to those who aren't ready to accept this to wait for the next bus (and vice-versa to a chareidi traveler on a mix-seating bus). They run often enough. Voila!
5. Shame on Egged for monster policy. Stop the bus and wait for
Bunnie Meyer ,   Los Angeles, CA USA   (12.18.11)
insulting passenger to get off. Other passengers who want to get to their destination will quiet him down or put him off.
6. That young haredi man should have been ordered off the bus
Raymond in DC ,   Washington, DC USA   (12.18.11)
The bus is not his personal domain, nor that of his kind. The driver should have told him that if he couldn't respect the public's right to sit where they wish, he could walk.
7. !!)))
(12.18.11)
I'm a religious person and I absolutely agree with what he says: 1) This is not only our country therefore we have no right to impose our opinion upon the majority 2) The buses don't belong to Chareidim, so you want segregation: get your own buses...or don't use buses at all! And I think that the matter is again taken out of proportion. You know: once (only once in all 20 years I lived in Israel) I walked along the road in Israel and secular boy spat at me from the bus in front of 20 people without any reason. He used the fact that I will not catch him since the bus moves quickly. I was offended! So let me claim that ALL SECULAR BOYS are rotten bastards and so on. Let me take a case and make a private crusade against all secular education! But isn't it mad?))))) There are just bad secular boys and there are bad religious boys too.))))) Why to take EVERYTHING out of any proportion?
8. Segregation has no place in democracy.
Gabe ,   Canada   (12.18.11)
9. Metzger is in fact in favor
Jacob ,   B7, Israel   (12.18.11)
of segregation, please note this. He only believes it cannot be imposed by force. Poor Judaism...
10. An orthodox jew's oppinion....
Shalom ,   U.S.A.   (12.18.11)
When the jewish was liberated from slavery and left Egypt did women have to walk separately from men or stayed with their families? Stop this nonsense immediately!
11. Whos side are You on - the Popular -
Arn. ,   Sweden.   (12.18.11)
- Or HASHEMs ?. Chief rabbi: Israel isn't haredi land Rabbi Metzger speaks out against sex segregation on buses, says ultra-Orthodox public cannot impose its opinion on rest of population Comment - The land belongs to HASHEM. But According to You - Can the rest of the Population impose its opinion on Ultraortodox Population ?. Arn.Sweden.
12. Chief rabbi: Israel IS haredi land
David ,   Karmiel, Israel   (12.18.11)
Religous coercion proves it!
13. Kavod HaRav Amar & Kavod HaRav Metzger
Sephardi Leftist ,   Israel   (12.18.11)
Thank you for the directness of your words.
14. Segregated buses in haredi neighborhoods
A ,   B   (12.18.11)
and buses on sabbath in Tel Aviv. Fair enough, no?
15. what about
pini   (12.18.11)
Haredim sitting on the back of the bus? Can the secular make silly demands also?
16. #11 Arn
Ben ,   Chutzlaaretz   (12.19.11)
2 Points: 1. Where in the Torah does it say women should be treated like 2nd. class citizens? How far do you think that would have taken you in front of Judge Devorah? 2. If Haredi women and men wish to live in this manner, they are welcome to do so (So long as there is no physical harm done to their women and children), but they must do so on their own dime and in their own time. If you own your own buses, by all means, do the 11th. Century stuff all you want. However Egged is a public company subsidized with public tax money. I will not stand for you take take a groosh of my tax money to pay for your non-Torah anti-Jewish, backwards way of life. I respect Metzger for at least recognizing that continuing this assault on the rest of us by the Haredi community will result in severe internal strife. It is only a matter of time until Meah-Shearim gets mobbed by 10,000 Seculars sick of this behavior. Shape up and show respect for the rest of clal Yisrael before it is too late.
17. not even counted
jack ,   usa   (12.19.11)
I'm pretty sure that when the Jews were counted receiving the torah it was really double because then woman were not even counted.
18. #17: another group wasn't counted:
Naftush ,   Israel   (12.19.11)
men who didn't serve in the army. Whoops...
19. Two Things:
Mitchell Cohen ,   Gush Etzion, Israel   (12.19.11)
1) Kol HaKavod to Rabbi Metzger and Rabbi Amar for speaking out.... 2) In all fairness to the bus driver, his job is to be a bus driver, not a police officer. Perhaps, those guys who come on the bus and wake us up to check if we payed to get on the bus (by asking to see our tickets) would be better utilized for "policing" situations just like this....
20. haridim
colin   (12.19.11)
Israel is not haridi land accoring to rabbi BUT THE HARIDIM WILL DO THE UTMOST TO ENFORCE THIER BELIEF ON THE PEOPLE. this (they call it god) ghost of the parasites has effected thier brains.
21. THE Heredi MUST GIVE UP MACHINES, TRANSPORTATION
(12.19.11)
LIKE THE AMISH, the heredim need to go to the real TORAH INSTRUCTIONs. get out those horse drawn wagons, skip all the electrical stuff, the meets the techs, GET DOWN WITH THE AMISH, heredim do your thing... LIVE THE FREE (handouts stay as is for now) RELIGIOUS LIFE OF THE 11TH century... meanwhile if it says "PUBLIC TRANSPORTATION", it is PUBLIC TRANSPORTATION and keep your "elongated, cartooned, characterized, satirized, and stereotyped "huge heredi NOSES" in your own buses, not everyone else's democratic SHARED seatings.
22. Hashem...
Anna Giladi ,   Israel   (12.20.11)
...never called for gender segregation. Some ultra-religious nut added that to a loooong list of nonsensical rules. G-d doesn't care how you dress, G-d doesn't care what bus you're on. G-d gave Israel to the Jews so they could live in peace, so why would G-d be in favor of Jews waging war against one-another about petty BULLSHIT such as gender segregation? Oh please.
23. Peace for All
Dawn ,   Everywhere USA   (12.23.11)
Please try to feel love in your heart for your fellow human being, be kind, spread joy and love, say a kind word. Why is this so difficult for so many. We are all equal, as WE ARE ALL ONE.
24. If it wasn't for the Chareid buses, I couldn't get home
mzk1 ,   Haifa, Israel   (12.26.11)
The intercity Chareidi buses from Jerusalem to Haifa do not leave from the central station, and are the only buses running at night. If they weren't there, I couldn't get home from a wedding. I don't know if they could run without the demand from people who need separate buses. I ususally sit in the middle wih my wife. (By the way, she is African-American and they don't bother her.) Most Chareidim I know don't require them, but they run at convenient times and routes.
25. It wasn't the religious people...
mzk1 ,   Haifa, Israel   (12.26.11)
...who stopped the buses in Tel Aviv. It was traditional / secular people like Bialik.
26. Didn't they accuse him of being too Chareidi?
mzk1 ,   Haifa, Israel   (12.26.11)
..when he was elected? Everybody happy now?
