1. MRS. L. LIVNAT
SJOERD RUURD VAN DER ,   MULTIVERSE   (12.25.11)
THIS TIME I HAVE SYMPATHY FOR THE ACTION OF MRS. L. LIVNAT AND FOR THAT OCCASSION I WANT TO WISH HER MUCH SUCCESS.
2. Wether you are left wing or right wing
Michael ,   West Jerusalem/NY   (12.25.11)
You have to agree with her. Its totally unacceptable that haredim makes their rules in towns where not everyone is haredi. If it were places like Elad,Modiin Illit. No one would care.
3. Woman, deny him your services, including sex.
Michael ,   California, USA   (12.25.11)
If your husband, boyfriend, any other man is discriminating against you, don't wait for the government (or courts, or police) to help you. Deny them your services, tell them they are your enemies. Deny them all of your services, including sex. Women need to declare this is a very important principle, that men and women are equal in every way. If you don't fight for your rights, women, if you sit in the back of buses or walk on different sidewalks, in a week you will be forced to wear burkas. Women, this fight is an extreme one and there should be no compromise with discriminating males.
4. I am Haredi and agree wholly. In Haredi cities Haredim can
(12.25.11)
make rules that are accepted by the community, but in cities of mixed Haredi and non-practicing it is completely unjust to enforce this kind of segregation. If a woman has achieved something deserving of recognition, she should be able to accept it the same as any man earning the same accolade and not be made to sit on the sidelines while some man accepts it on her behalf. What a lot of nonsense. As far as Haredi "women's rights" -- I appreciate Livnat's sensitivity that in the same vein as not enforcing Haredi values on non-religious, that liberal feminist notions not be imposed on longstanding comfort zones of religious women either.
5. #3
Trev ,   Canada   (12.25.11)
That Is really offensive, "deny him your services" like sex?
6. haredi man ,
(12.25.11)
i think they are all heading your way soon, because of the 7 year old american girl you firiends freaked out,
7. Finally
Chaya ,   Beitar Illit   (12.25.11)
A voice of reason. As a woman who rides in the back of the bus and likes it that way ( I know, I know, I've been brainwashed by the men who run my life to think I like it that way. Poor demeaned me.) it seems to me that every time somebody blasts the idea of separation on buses ("here comes the Taliban, we'll soon be living in Saudi Arabia, Haredim are a century behind") they lose legitimacy because instead of focusing on the issue at hand - a minority group cannot impose its value system on the majority in a democracy - they're busy passing judgement on someone else's life choices...which modern, educated, enlightened, liberal, open minded people of the 21st century NEVER do.
8. seperation
judy ,   jlm   (12.25.11)
Sorry, give in once give in twice... public buses r public buses...for all to sit, stand where ever. Please do not cave into the religious parties or the monopoly of the egged bus company. Why not look at this as a great opportunity for the religious community to start a new business ,a private buses company, run by the religious, think of the jobs it would create... then people will have a fair choice..
9. Something must be done to stop this spiral
Tzila ,   Israel   (12.25.11)
Please I beseech you Haredi to keep your rules within your cities. Us "infidels" that live among you in other cities cannot tolerate the infringement of the liberties that are given to all of us by the Almighty. If bus riding is the pet peeve of the day, then set up your own transportation companies for solving this problem of yours. When the Haredi tamper with existing systems it only creates friction. You are terribly clever and smart. There has to be a solution that will keep the already so fragile peace among us.
10. women -take political power
(12.25.11)
If women formed a single issue political party or a women's section in the main political parties , elections would surely scare the men to do something to improve the lot of our women. As R. Metzger says in Judaism public domains are public for everybody's thoroughfare, and so are public services. A clear distinction exists in Halacha which Haredim understand all to well.
11. Easy solution :
Barbara ,   Haifa Israel   (12.25.11)
Separate the Harediim to their own city - ruled and controlled by them - and wall it in. Walls all around the Haredi city - no other types of humans can come in. Another type of Gaza. BUT no financial support from Israel.
12. she didn't notice
israel israeli ,   tel aviv   (12.25.11)
When the Haredim help the extreme Left form a government, no one complains. As long as Haredim vote to expel Zionists from their home or support the Fatah terror organization, nobody care what they do to women. But when Haredim support a Zionist government? Suddenly it's open season on Haredim and suddenly people care about "separation of women".
13. In my birth town
Charles ,   Petach Tikva   (12.25.11)
Women are not allowed to the cemetery for a burial at the Orthodox rest places . So my sisters could not assist at the burial of our Mother Z.
14. The end result of a true need
Paul ,   Jerusalem, Israel   (12.25.11)
If women want to believe that their misery, frustration, inadequacies, failures and meaninglessness in life is because of the primitive demands of the Haredim, they are fooling themselves. The Haredim only remind woman that their quest for freedom and equality only resulted in a cultural dearth of increased self-doubt and lack of self-respect. The woman who look to cultural freedom, work pay and clothes choices to feel accomplished is half a woman, usually loved by half a man.
15. Thank you. Finally some balance.
rebecca ,   Modiin   (12.25.11)
16. #13 That's really awful. Has to be stopped.
rebecca ,   Modiin   (12.25.11)
I cannot think of anything more dreadful than not being able to take a parent to their grave. I have seen it before and was modified. BH here in Modiin they do not enforce separation.
17. 16 This law was done to protect...
ORA ,   JERUSALEM   (12.25.11)
women s sensibility. To day women being in active life equal to men,may they are less sensitive .
18. New Bus Companies For Chareidim
Baruch ,   Jtown   (12.25.11)
A great idea. Unfortunately it's illegal, as Egged has the tender. The Chareidim have tried but they have been successfully sued by Egged and stopped by the government. To compensate, Egged provides a public service for Chareidim.: Separate bus lines. On these bus lines there happen to be some Chareidim who feel as if they have a right to sit apart from women. I think this context is important. Please bear in mind that I'm not condoning some of the behavior. I'm just explaining the attitude behind it. I would love to have responses, I just ask that they be based on the points raised here not be broadsides aimed at Chareidim in general.
19. Limor, as long as there's one woman
gerardo stawsky ,   jerusalem, israel   (03.24.13)
who feels her right is being violated, isn't that right worth defending? Livnat's words: "I'm not sure. I meet opinionated women, they are not miserable. They don't want to rub up against men and say they are comfortable". How many women feel they're being discriminated. Even if just one, even if none, those rights are still worth defending. Btw, I couldn't care less about their costumes, we live in a democratic state, segregation and discrimination is not allowed. Period. The same way slavery does not depend on whether the slave wants to be a slave, it is still illegal. The fact that Livnat doesn't understand this, makes me wonder whether she's fit for office.
