The major reason any sufferings would not be limited to Iran is because the Mullahs tend to target everyone - mostly civilians - everywhere, whether involved in hostilities or not. They've already said they'd nail every neighboring Arab country that is friendly to the West, that they would gladly send thousands of "shahids" with bombs across borders as they did to clear Iraqi minefields (although, that was kids with shiny, fake keys), and would target EU cities. The Iranians are not stupid people. Their navy has assessed the situation as is doing this as a detractor from the nuclear issue and threats of more sanctions. In the event of conflict our mission is to sink most of their navy and then hit land bases, missile stations and infrastructure. Ok so putting an entire carrier group into the straights is a good thing. remember there are probably a few subs and cruse missile ships with them. This is not a small move by any means. If something were to happen, I am waiting to see the embargo on Iran's oil go through. But if Iran was that stupid, the carrier could have planes over Iran in minutes not days. You can use the carrier as a launch pad for drones, more importantly you can launch refueling planes to fuel up Israeli fighters. Don't forget the harpoon systems which could decimate the Iranian navy pretty quickly. Tomahawk systems from subs and cruisers could target anti aircraft systems as well as hit their air force. This could all be over before it actually starts..

Brian, Realize a few things... The USA is in international waters. Our enemies have approached US waters... A ships design or size is of very little consequence in the nuclear age. Since WW2, having the abilty to blow any country off the map no country has actually used them. study they Iran/Iraq war which was more similar to ww1, poisen gas, trench warfare. Very civilized?
