1. Derrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr
Benny ,   Ashkelon   (01.01.12)
Simple , if the haredi community wants rights then they must work, serve in the army and obey the laws of the land, whats so bloody hard to understand here? For me its just common sense
2. Harideem rights? thats a joke
Haim ,   TA   (01.01.12)
When the majority of them serve in the army, get a job , pay tax and stop attacking women and spitting on 8 year old girls, learn how to behve like human beings, stop imposing their insane lifestyle on others then we shall talk about rights. In the meantime prepare for civil war.
3. No Right for Rights
Db ,   Anytown, USA   (01.01.12)
As soon as the Haredim start serving in the army, and contributing to the labor force, then they can come forward and start talking about rights. Until such time as they stop leeching from the government without giving anything back, they do not even have the right to ask for rights.
4. The Haredim do not have rights.
Devorah   (01.01.12)
They have special privileges, and there is a big difference between the two.
5. Looney govt. WOULD NOT let the chardim run their OWN busses.
Bunnie Meyer ,   Los Angeles, CA USA   (01.01.12)
This could have all be solved years ago if the government had said to Egged, "hey, the ultra-orthodox can buy their own buses, put signs on them, "women sit in the back only" and are responsible for making a profit or going out of business." Now, all the buses are required to be egalitarian, this displeases the chardim, the seculars, and NO ONE is happy. Let the chardim run their own buses and financially sink or swim as obviously the orthodox women and orthodox men LIKE it that way and let the rest of the people take Egged. Everyone can be happy.
6. RIGHTS ????
lewcha ,   Israel   (01.01.12)
This article only touches the tip of the iceberg - segregation on public transport. What about spitting on a child !!! What about the erecting of notices demanding women to walk on the other side of the road. What about the verbal abuse, particularly to women, children and soldiers. No where in the civilized world is spitting and verbal abuse considered acceptable. I am sure that anyone committing this abhorrent act in the west (even in the name of religion) would soon find himself being carted away by the police and duly dealt with by the courts. You say that the Haridi community have there rights – is this type of behavior their RIGHT!!!! Yes – I would like them to "regain their senses” ,If they don't wish to live like us, dress like us, and study like us - then that's fine, just behave like human beings in a mixed society.
7. Answer to question posed in headline
Raptor   (01.01.12)
YES.
8. Rights and obligations
Israeli   (01.01.12)
You are right that they have rights. However with rights comes obligations such as working, paying taxes and serving in the army
9. If so, then the Muslims of Europe are100% right in demanding
tom ,   tel aviv   (01.01.12)
Sharia-courts! It's their "right" sanctified by the very same belief in an Imaginary Friend, only their Friend is somewhat more bloodthirsty than 'ours"!
10. Haredim also have rights
Marj ,   Haifa   (01.01.12)
Rights you receive when you do your duties first. I don't see the connection between haredim and duties. So what are they demanding rights for??
11. Ypour enemies have you in their sights they work 24/7
Al   (01.01.12)
trying all they can to skuttle you and yours and all you petz ever do is piss on yourselves 24/7 with bile and anger. Grow up already. The Arab world is about to join the Hamas MB gang and all you morons do is piss all over yourselves 24/7. Are you peolle insane? So what that the Haredi want seperate buses etc...Who the F cares? Dont get into their faces and they wont do the same. Learn to respect eachother and grow up. Geez...Live and let live for heavens sake.
12. Why is it too much to expect EVERYONE including Haredim to..
DOH ,   Israel   (01.01.12)
behave in public like civilized human beings? Actually, the heredim should be the best example of this because they believe they represent HaShem. Nobody, heredim included should have to be told not to harass women (from what the author says I gather this was happening on religious buses therefore woman asked to be separated).... If everyone shows respect for others, controlls THEMSELVES not others, looks down and keeps their mouths shut if they see something that bothers them, walk along and go where you are headed and leave others alone (basic normal civilized behavior!!!! especially for a religious person!!!!!!) none of these incidents would have become a problem. LIVE AND LET LIVE (in peace)
13. Do they have right to impose Haredi standards on all datim?
Thinking Jew ,   Israel   (01.01.12)
No!!!
14. When will they learn
Yoni Mortzman ,   Jerusalem   (01.01.12)
Cant any of the secular jews understand that the vast majority of Chareidim dont spit or harass women. When will they learn that Most Chareidim pay taxes and arnona. Yes Chareidim dont go to the army because they would be made to do things against there beliefs. Forthermore tens of thousands of Chareidim would join the work force if military service was not a prerequisite. No Chareidim are not evil and coniving all they want is to live as they and their forfathers have lived for thousands of years. No the vast majority do not push there beleifes on everyone else. They do owe a large thank you to the secular media (Channel 2 first and formost) for presenting them as totally ignorant drooling people who hate everyone and just want to coerce everyone to do what they want stop generalizing PLEASE
15. Without a doubt there are people who dont want Hardim to exi
rebecca ,   Modiin   (01.01.12)
And those people create a lot of the tension. Our news media are amongst the worst of these. (incl Haim who posts here). But that does not excuse the behavior of the Sikrikim and the small percentage of Hardim that spit on people, call them dirty names etc. Both groups need to learn that they cannot force their world view on others. It takes all kinds to make up this world, and in particular, Israel. There is currently no tolerance on either side.
16. #1, #2, #3 please explain
israel israeli ,   tel aviv   (01.01.12)
Are you saying we should deprive rights of all Arabs, all Druze and Bedouin women, Aviv Gefen and Dafni Leef? Tell me when you get Meretz / Labor support and then we'll talk.
17. We want to get rid of the heredim?
Papa bear ,   Israel   (01.01.12)
Not necessarily... but if European Jews in the 1930-40's behaved like this it probably contributed to what happened in the holocaust. Who can live with such people? I feel the same about leftists in this country who favor Arabs over their own brothers. This is a family behavior problem. We need to have a discussion.
18. #16 Israeli time to take a reality check
Haim ,   TA   (01.01.12)
Last time i checked most arabs, druze and Bedouin actaully work for a living and pay taxes, when they can get the work, how brave of you to go after a few indiviuals yet ignoring the majority of the harideem who do not serve in the IDF, do not work or pay taxes, so you can shove your rights where the sun dont shine.
19. Yes - disappear - if they keep on behaving like this.
Barbara ,   Haifa Israel   (01.01.12)
20. #15 Rebecca cluless in Modin
Haim ,   TA   (01.01.12)
Geee Beckey didnt know i had such an impact - LOL
21. OP-ED: Idle Pens looking to stir trouble
Norbus ,   Jerusalem   (01.01.12)
22. Rights
moshe ,   Stamford Hill, Londo   (01.01.12)
True Torah jews do not need to provide obligations to the seculars. Our obligation is to Torah. Haredim are entitled to live as they see fit for Hashem and Halahah -end of story.
23. @ 16
Benny ,   Ashkelon   (01.01.12)
It dont get clearer than what I said , if you dont understand just ask your mother for only she will have the patience to go over it again and again.
24. Ch'aredim vs. Ch'ilonim, X vs. Y etc.
No aliyah for me!   (01.01.12)
After watching with disgust and sadness the incessant battles between polarized camps at opposite ends on the religious and political spectra...I know that my family and I will NEVER move to Eretz Israel! The Shamdah Vech'arpah surrounding all current events is beyond the pale...Ahavat Yisrael is obviously an alien concept to many while Sineat Ch'inam and mayhem are the order of the day everywhere. To a Diaspora outsider, looking at Israel nowadays, extremism is normalcy, fanaticism is a badge of courage and civil discourse/debate is a thing of the past...outrageous and insensitive behavior is the only common denominator. Israel doesn't need/want moderate Jews to immigrate anymore, because firebrands and hotheads are the only ones on center stage these days thus they are the only ones who would be welcomed. As is said..."a Pox on Both your Houses!"; I don't want to to have to fight for my rights that one group or another will attempt to deprive me off or impose on me because of their personal views on political correctness or religious piety (or lack thereof) or some other minority viewpoint.
25. # 22 Moshe seems to be forgetting something
Haim ,   TA   (01.01.12)
They do not accept the rules of the game - equal work, equal pay and equal duties. They said, 'No, we have a special status in which we do not work and we do not pay taxes and we do not defend the country; you defend it for us. Well guess what ? we have had enough ! How strange the harideem work abroad and pay taxes the only reason they dont here is that they know they can get away with it - End of Story
26. #18 rise to the challenge
israel israeli ,   tel aviv   (01.01.12)
I don't get it. Please make clear criteria for EVERYONE, not just those you hate. Now you say the problem is not the army service (or you would be condemning the Leftists, women and Arabs) but not working. I agree: Change the law so Haredim can legally work even if they didn't serve in the IDF. Then deprive them (and everyone else who doesn't work) of their rights. By the way, could you print the percentage of Haredim compared to the number of Arab Muslims who legally work? You might be surprised.
27. not when they act like animals
alan ash ,   nyc ny   (01.01.12)
when they pay taxes and involve them selves in the medina and are constructive members of society looking out for its benefit and not burn their own garbage cans . then they can be members of society.
28. Haredi law
ShrinkDave ,   Miami USA   (01.01.12)
The rules and laws of Israel apply to ALL Israelis, and the religious community will comply just like everyone else.
29. Haredim have rights
gerry ,   raanana, Israel   (01.01.12)
Haredim have the right to live their lives as they wish. They have no right to tell anyone else how to live their lives.
30. So much hate..
Abba ,   Rehovot, Israel   (01.01.12)
Ya know, I'm reading down the list here and there are around 18 comments, and no less than 15 of them are just filled with hate of hundreds of thousands of people, they don't even know. Not hate of the behavior of the few that they have become aware of, but genuine hate of a lot of strangers they will never meet. I could argue back and say that the vast majority of haredim do work and pay taxes. Probably no less than half go into the army, etc... but whats the use. With such a desire to hate people it would just fall upon deaf ears....
