31. To all those eager for war
Reuben ,   Tel Aviv   (01.01.12)
Egypt is not Syria nor it is Gaza. Egypt has a strong army thanks to US. Like Israel it is too yearly funded and provided by the US with billions for defence. They have an army of 600K soldiers, more than 300 F16 jets, divisions of Abraham tanks, Apache attack choppers, Hummer jeeps with state of the art anti tank missiles, a wide range of surface to surface, surface to air missiles etc. It also has a very strong Navy which is thrice in number to Israel. We have only one advantage, the nuclear detterent. So war with Egypt should be the last option, as our homefront will suffer heavy losses.
32. Sadat was right. It was after all just a piece of paper.
Raymond in DC ,   Washington, USA   (01.01.12)
Sadat himself, sometime after the peace treaty's signing, expressed amazement that Egypt got back the entire Sinai with all its resources, and all Begin got was a piece of paper. That the Brotherhood seems prepared to tear up that treaty is hardly surprising. Indeed, he's following the Hudabaiya precedent set by Mohammed, who established a non-aggression treaty with his enemies which he preceded to violate when he was strong enough to do so. (Arafat mentioned that precedent right after signing the Oslo Accords.) Egypt, of course, was never in full compliance with that peace treaty, as they failed to end incitement against Jews and Israel, and fought anything that smacked of "normalization". It does put to question the value of any future treaty with the Palestinians, who can't be trusted to honor or maintain it.
33. Actually, it is binding
William ,   Israel   (01.01.12)
or do Muslims consider their own signatures to be worth the same as their own lives (which is pretty worthless these days)? One thing these Islamists forget is - with the peace deal, they received many, many benefits, $$$, and land. They, like all Arabs who express remorse in any deal they make, expect they can end their own obligations while keeping all of the benefits. The Egyptian army is no match for the Israeli army, and they know this. That's why the Egyptian army insisted they would keep the peace accord. One benefit for Israel this opens up is the ability to work, unhindered, in the Sinai theater against weapons smugglers AND definitely Hamas which MB is now protecting.
34. I can only hope that Egypt does this. I can only hope.
usa   (01.01.12)
35. #13 - that's what Islamists do
William ,   Israel   (01.01.12)
When they turn things into an oppressive toilet, they have better control over the population and their expectations. Look at Somalia! They literally target and kill UN aid workers delivering food to their own impoverished nation. We see that when an Arab nation produces wealth, a high standard of living, and a bit of freedom, it often brings critical thinking and a move away from religion - all ILLEGAL under Islamists.
36. #31 - we're also much better trained
William ,   Israel   (01.01.12)
and with the ending of a peace accord, the US ends any support for Egypt giving Israel the opportunity to decimate the Egyptian army's resources in a first-move without worrying about replacements. Any replacements by Iranian or Russian sources will be too late and Egyptians have no been trained on the equipment yet. Keep in mind, the IDF has a contingency plan on Egypt for the past decades in case of such a situation.
37. Egypt is intoxicated with islamic opium
J.K. ,   Brooklyn USA   (01.01.12)
38. Muslim Brotherhood Cutting the Legs of the Palestinians
Jacob Blues ,   New York City, USA   (01.01.12)
If the Muslim Brotherhood cancels the peace treaty with Israel, it will cut out the legs of the Palestinians. The entire peace process is based on UNSC resolution 242, the old 'land for peace' formula. By cancelling the peace treaty with Israel, Egypt will essentially shred the foundation of that process resulting in an end to the idea of exchanging territory for peace.
39. Surprise, surprise
Dony ,   Canada   (01.01.12)
Israel peace deal isn't binding.Let's thank them for their honesty in that we can now say..............Peace with the Palestinian entity is a nonstarter. Expansion of Israeli settlements is beginning to make a lot of sense. As predicted the Egyptian spring is turning into a major fiasco.
40. Islamist Brotherhood
Brod ,   USA   (01.01.12)
Their goal is to crusade their Jihadism and conquer the whole non-Islamist world. They are the Mother of all Islamist-Jihadist terrorism around the world. Whoever engineered their emergence by dethroning the previous governments in the region have an evil latent agenda detrimental to Israel and the Free World. These dark forces do not know peace.
41. Steve no 29
LION OF JUDAH   (01.01.12)
You are 101% right.
42. egypt and the muslim brotherhood
joel ,   usa   (01.01.12)
israel should withdraw from egypt, let the western countries that back up the mulsim brotherhood deal with it, that's the best move for israeli, but, protection should the priority for the country!
43. Sinai does not belong to egypt
David L ,   Los angeles   (01.01.12)
I just wana remind everyone that the borders in yhr middle east were arbitrarily drawn and in the case of sinai this is ever more true. Egypt is in africa and sinai in asia! How did egypt get this huge peninsula? Because of self intersts of the mandate countries. It should be divided between israel saudis and egypt.....i welcome comments.
44. I wonder if Sinai is that tightly bind to Egypt as these
leo ,   usa   (01.01.12)
delusional fools think it is.
45. The Outcome of Obama's Middle East Policy
chantalle.ezer ,   Frankfurt Germany   (01.01.12)
The situation in Egypt is the outcome of US policy. They will not honour the peace treaty, they will attack Israel, they will destroy the gas pipelines and they will block the Suez Canal. I guess moderate extremists have to behave like this. Unfortunatelly, 90% of the German leftwing party members and partisans will cheer their actions. Ezer
46. Jules @ 4, in1979 things were not as stable for Israel as
leo ,   usa   (01.01.12)
they are today. At very least there is no threat of Soviet Union to deal with anymore. In addition Menahem Begin gave Israel time an opportunity to grow some meat on the bone and this is why today you think "how could they ...?".
47. Do not Underestimate Egypt
Ahmed ,   Egypt   (01.01.12)
it will be a foolish thing if you thought Egypt didn't have a plan too. if you didn't know Egypt has an annual full training on total war on the eastern front and trained to move its whole army with all divisions to Sinai in less than 2 hours even with out using its long range missiles and with respect to Israel nuke arsenal Egypt has its own arsenal of chemical and biological weapons and about the training on Russian weapons although Egypt is using American weapon Egypt didn't give up the Russian weapon like MiG and AK47 and old Russian tanks and Russian SAM missiles so Egypt don't need to be retrain on it.and thanks to the US annual military aid and training EDF is not less technological than the IDF. with the consideration that Egyptian army is outnumber the IDF.
48. If MB is that stupid
Gee ,   Zikron Yaakov   (01.01.12)
Then not only will we take back the Sinai, but the $2.8 billion the US gives the Egyptians will go away. Egypt is already bankrupt and has a population of 80 million that they cannot feed. Can anybody say Somalia to these people?
49. MB and other Arabs
Helena ,   Stockholm, Sweden   (01.01.12)
it is not desert which created Arabs, it was Arabs who created a desert
50. land is more valuable that toilet paper treaties
zionist forever   (01.01.12)
Egypt is proof that treaties are not worth the paper they are written on because future governments can say we didn't sign this somebody else did so we will not consider it binding. Land is more valuable that toilet paper treaties. I knew eventually the MB would get round to trying to tear up the peace treaty with Israel but I didn't expect it to be this soon as they are wanting American money to pay their debts and rebuild their economy. I hope that the US will at the very least suspend all military aid to Egypt until we get a better idea of whit direction this islamist government is going to take towards israel. Also how will they respond towards dealings with the palestinians? If there is a Cast Lead 2 will Egypt go to war with Israel? The dictators themselves might not always have been very nice to their own people but the region needed Mubarak, Assad & co even in Iraq Saddam Hussain kept order and since 2003 thousands of Iraqi's have been killed by Iraqi's. The arab spring failed miserably, we got rid of some dictators but it didn't bring either peace or stability to the region as a whole.
51. DEMOCARCY IS A BEAUTIFUL THING
Arabi   (01.01.12)
Gone are the days when the Arab street obeys the orders of their dictators. Bush wanted democracy in Iraq and it has spread like wildfire. Way to go GOP party. You have started the new ME that Condi talked about.
52. Im not clesr!Does Egypt want Sinai and no peace treaty?
Alan ,   SA   (01.01.12)
53. Whats the point of signing ANY treaties with the Pals either
Puzzled Alan ,   SA   (01.01.12)
54. Only return of Sinai can create balance with Egypt.
Jerry ,   The Netherlands   (01.01.12)
55. why no more land for peace. defensible borders or nothing.
ralph   (01.01.12)
56. #47 Don't Underestimate Israel!
Edwin ,   Canada   (01.01.12)
Ahmed, Your analysis is strikingly different to even that of the Egyptian Generals, at least in private, and most military pundits. But, that seems to be an endemic brain-function flaw which has led to humiliating defeats in the Sinai for Egyptians and their kin in Gaza.
57. what does Israels lose by its continually breaching treaty?
observer ,   Egypt   (01.01.12)
it's in the permeable and body of the treaty that Israel has to talk with the Palestinian and Syrians according to the UNSCR 242, what advances has Israel had in that respect? nothing. Secondly in the treaty, Both Egypt and Israel has to limit their military presence on BOTH sides of the border, which Israel hasn't given a damn to. The first part or preamble was a framework for negotiations to establish an autonomous self-governing authority in the West Bank and the Gaza strip and to fully implement SC 242. The Accords recognized the "legitimate rights of the Palestinian people", guaranteeing the full autonomy of the people within a period of five years. Egypt guarantees of freedom of passage through the Suez Canal and Straits of Tiran. Israel agreed to limit its forces to a distance of 3 km from the Egyptian border, and to guarantee free passage between Egypt and Jordan. What does Israel lose if Egypt annuls the treaty is the free passage in Suez Canal and Tiran straits, both are sovereign Egypt's territories.
58. To: No. 47
Sarah B ,   U.S.A. / Israel   (01.02.12)
The Egyptian army has always outnumbered the Israeli army. However, it hasn't prevented us from running your sorry asses to hell in the past, and it won't stop us now. The operative term is "quality," not quantity. Israel has quality in spades, and Egypt doesn't. Are you really all that anxious for Israel to humiliate you yet again? Six times of having your asses seriously kicked isn't enough? Well, in that case, bring it on, and watch what will happen. Except this time, we probably won't stop at the Canal, and we might consider the Aswan Dam to be a legitimate military target. If Israel REALLY decides to take it to you, Egypt will cease to exist. You do realize that, don't you?
59. Muslim brotherhood
Dave Longeuay ,   Brea, USA   (01.02.12)
The Muslim brotherhood has for decades befriended many Arab leaders like Haj Amin al Huseini since the days of the holocaust. Al Huseini was the top Arab leader to work closely with the Nazis to eliminate all Jews. www.rebirthofisrael.com
60. Sarah B #58 is wrong about numbers
observer ,   Egypt   (01.02.12)
Israel was never outnumbered by number of Arab soldiers or soldiers in any war, even in the war of independence Jewish soldiers outnumbered Arab ones and acquired much more weapons after Hudnas.
