1. Always
Jock Strap   (01.03.12)
Can men purchase "tampons and always' in this "supermarket".
2. Well.....
Jacob ,   Holon   (01.03.12)
unless haraedi men are really different from other men, those lines will just be super quick, mostly 10 items or less lines.
3. How Ridiculous!
sb   (01.03.12)
This only helps to deligitimize Israel and fan the fires of global ridicule. Don't anyone ever call Moslems "primitive: again. I suppose the men and women sleep in different bedrooms too!
4. Another Target for the Secularist.
Avon   (01.03.12)
I can just see how the secular women are just itching to exploit this situation with a slogan "free women rights" "we are oppressed" blah blah blah. Total nonsense.
5. Women need to flock to store and use that lane.
Josh   (01.03.12)
Take a lesson from the Afro American struggles where they send busses of people to towns as a show of solidarity and standing up for rights. If the social justice protesters were actually real, they would be here. Standing for social justice on all fronts because they really were concerned about their society. Or was that whole thing staged? LOL
6. does rami levy not read hebrew?!
tom ,   toronto, canada   (01.03.12)
the picture accompanying this article clearly shows TWO signs, conveniently circled in red. one reads "cashier 1 men", and the other, with a yellow background, clearly says "cashier 1 for men only". this doesn't quite jive with mr levy's statement that: "... out of 15 cash counters, one of them has a sign reading 'for men', not 'men only', because that is EXACTLY what it says.
7. "beaten up"?? Shame!
Ze'ev ,   Nbg, germany   (01.03.12)
"In a city with an official chastity squad, every boy and girl who fail to toe the line get beaten up with municipality and mayor's support," he notes! OMG! Why nobody takes action against that, why nobody reports about that!
8. its just a stupid marketing gimik
zionist forever   (01.03.12)
Even the haredi radicals have no problem cuing up in line at a store next to a woman, the radicals are not that radical. Gender segregated check out lanes is just a lame marketing ploy in the hope it will make the store sound more religious friendly in a hope to attract religious shoppers. Its like if the man goes around wearing a kipa and has tztisis try make the religious feel he is a good Jew we should shop with him When he goes home he takes off the kippa and eats a nice pork dinner. Eventually when he sees its not doing any good and possibly the idea of it even upsets some seculars he will probably change things back because the customer is always right.
9. Why does anyone care?
Abba ,   Rehovot, Israel   (01.03.12)
Beitar Elite is way far from any secular city or neighborhood. This works for them; why should anyone else care? Just another opportunity to bash. Sometimes people tend to forget that freedom is a two way street. Most of the time compromise is needed because all too often one's freedom tramples another's. Ay, you want to say that one should only have the freedoms that you agree with? I say melarke I don't expect anyone to tell me what color shirt I should wear or how short my pants can be, but I also don't live a place where people settled to be in a more or less self contained community with norms of their choosing. Why can't we all just live and let live? what a beautiful place this would be. I understand why it's bothersome in beit shemesh, and I don't agree with anyone bashing or abusing someone who isn't following my norms but to attack an isolated community like beitar? Isn't that like the show on the other foot?

zionist forever   (01.03.12)
I was in the supermarket yesterday and there was a haredi man and his young son in front of me and he had a shopping cart full to the very top. I imagine the guy just wanted some condoms but had to buy all the other stuff as well so if anybody notices them he could say must have slipped in there by accident.

"OMG! Why nobody takes action against that, why nobody reports about that! " Perhaps, because it's simply not true.
12. Sexual Apartheid State
Gregg ,   Haifa, IL   (01.03.12)
Israel, the State that practices sexual segregation in 2012.
13. ????
johnny ,   norway   (01.03.12)
ill expect this in Iran and some Muslim country's but not in Israel...
14. This only bothers those who hate
Yoni the Jew ,   Jewish homeland   (01.03.12)
This should not bother anyone unless they are looking for an excuse to hate. If there are men who prefer to be in all male lines why can't you accommodate by opening one line for them? No one is forcing anyone to do anything or offending anyone in any way possible. This is pure hatred
15. excuse me
ecr   (01.03.12)
but this men's only lane has been around for way over a year, and whoever is bothered by it can shop in another store. Sorry, but this story was dug up to add to the pile of hate stories, shame on us. ENOUGH! Go get a real time story with one Jew helping another.
16. To 13: Norway
erik ,   oslo, norway   (01.04.12)
Norway, oh yes, that's the country where they have separate classrooms for black and white schoolchildren. Lots to learn from them.
17. 12
john Darren ,   cairns-Australia   (01.04.12)
Being a poofter, what counter do you go to.Female?
18. #14 Yoni the Jew
Michael ,   Haifa   (01.04.12)
Hate is not a one-way street...for years Haredim have called me (as a secular Zionist) a "shaygitz" (abomination in English) who speaks Hebrew. The extreme orthodox set the tone of hatred for all Jews who are less orthodox than themselves. And suddenly they are offended by "hatred" when it boomerangs back at them.
19. Time to boycot Rami Levi
Haim ,   TA   (01.04.12)
This is how it starts, they start with a male only que in one store in some religious neighborhood and then it spreads to other cities. This is the same Rami Levi that fired a female employee ( jewish) for having an affair with an arab employee. I for one would never set foot in a Rami Levi supermarket.
20. Do they make the men show their manhood as proof of manhood?
amazed ,   ATLANTA   (01.04.12)
This gets more and more pathetic each day.
21. Let the ULTRA-orthoddox shop there, I wouln't.
Bunnie Meyer ,   Los Angeles, CA USA   (01.04.12)
22. #17 - that's the best you can do?
Gregg ,   Haifa, IL   (01.04.12)
try again
23. Religion
joe ,   israel   (01.04.12)
It stinks
24. Silly Israel
Shmuli ,   NY   (01.04.12)
We have the same in the USA. What a silly country....they really love to make a big deal over everything. Again, what;s the big deal, they added a men's only and women's only checkout line becasue that's what their customers wanted. We have the same thing in Monsey, and in Brooklyn. If someone wants a mens only or women's only line they can use it.
25. I guess I will now boycott Rami Levy!
jason white ,   afula, israel   (01.04.12)
He should have thrown the alleged "rabbis" out of his store. Even use physical force to keep them out. We Jews do not need these hara-dim cultists telling us what to do in our country. The whole damn world gives us orders. We get orders from the arabs, the leftists, the u.n., the eurabian union, b.o. and hitlery as well as the U.S. department of state. Time to tell them all to STFU!
26. What a bunch of quasi intteligent moronic comments
American Sabrah ,   Israel   (01.04.12)
Why are you so concerned about what Haredim do in their communities? How does it affect you Tel Avivniks and Haifaniks when you don't live anywhere near them? Or are you looking for an excuse to release your venomous irrational hatred on the religious? They are entitled to establish their religious standards in their communities. So long as you don't live there or have any intentions of visiting there, you have no right to complain. I am too critical of the Haredim when they try to impose their religious adherence in public areas but not because I hate them. As a religious person, I don't think religion has a place in public domains. The incessant hatred and merciless ridicule towards the haredim/religious needs to stop. If you want people to tolerate and accept you for who you are, it may help for you to show the same consideration.
27. 9 & 14
zionist forever   (01.04.12)
The problem is secular society has grown up with issues of feminism, racism, political correctness etc and so the attitude is as we are progressive enlightened ones then we should lead and the backwards haredi should follow for their own good. The haredi have always lived a sheltered life and spent their days studying Torah not politically correct humanist nonsense and their way is the only way they know. Religious men do not mingle with women who are not their wives and same as women don't mingle with men and so very often things like segregation suits them both because they share the same culture. Unfortunately its not the politically correct secular culture and so even if its what both the men and woman want and its not actually hurting anybody it will anger alot of secular people. We have a culture clash here and if we are going to solve the problem then both sides need to live and let live. Leave the haredi to do things their way without condemnation as long as its not hurting anybody, including gender segregation where appropriate ( haredi are not a bunch of Taliban terrorists ). At the same time haredi must be tolerant of secular culture. Right now what we have is gang culture and everybody is fighting to be top dog.
28. #12 Gregg- They are quite free
BEN JABO ,   ISRAEL   (01.05.12)
to boycott the store if they so wish, nothing say's you have to buy there either, they don't have a separate line for Arabs, such as yourself Nothing quite compares to your arab form of segregation which is known as Dhimmitude
29. RE: #16
iselin ,   Oslo, Norway   (01.05.12)
Are you trying to be sarcastic? You live in Oslo, so you ought to know that children attend the schools in the area where they live. There is no busing. And as you well know, there are no separate schools or classes for black and/or white children. What was the point of saying that?
30. So what? WHO CARES?!
One opinion   (01.06.12)
It is in an orthodox/ultraorthodox town, so what should any of us care? It's their home town, their liking or not, what do we have to bother ourselves with this. WHY make news of it all!??! Anyhow, their are also non-segregated lines so there is NO force to use one or the other. This shows readiness to serve those want this & those who don't, whatever is more comfortable for the customer. I asked & the woman who was refused work it was NOT because of her wig. It was something else that need not be mentioned here & would have caused her being refused in any case in most other shops too. You dudes are just foaming at the mouth to make "news" out of anything you can contrive.
