1. Check for sand corrosion
Rika N ,   Toronto   (01.08.12)
A lot of these used in Afg will have damage from very fine sand; will need thorough cleaning, probably some dismantling to do so. Factor this into the negotiated price.
2. Used Hummers
Politico ,   TLV/LA   (01.08.12)
So let's see...Bibi hustles Obama...now would you buy a used "Hummer" from this man?! I guess when the price is right, every is willing to get down and dirty...especially "Old Johns" like Bibi and Barak! In that case, I got a bridge for sale too!

4. is this good policy?
tom ,   toronto, canada   (01.08.12)
a one-time purchase like this will hurt the local producer of armoured jeeps for the idf, who will need to "adjust" their production, such as laying off workers and losing cashflow - hopefully, it will not put them out of business. but the idf will need them again, so harming them is a bad idea. it will also be paid for with american military aid, which is already stretched to pay for expensive "toys" like the f-35. it would make far more sense to use the american aid to purchase systems that israel cannot produce domestically. and lastly, instead of buying low-tech items like humvees, israel should be buying advanced systems like f-15 aircraft, partly to bolster the iaf's fleet with low-mileage, updated models, and partly to keep those planes from being sold to neighbouring arab countries, who will inevitably use them against israel. the idf may be good at fighting wars, but policy should be coming from the government.
5. Reportedly low mileage?
Henry from New York ,   USA   (01.08.12)
This has been known for a long time about the HUMVEE. The Hummer is the civilian model. Aren't we phasing out the HUMVEE in favour of the Bradley Fighting Vehicle? I understand that we don't want to just put them out to pasture, but sell Israel some Bradleys as well (I've heard they're very nice)!
6. #1 Negotiated price?
Roger ,   USA   (01.08.12)
The US is giving these vehicles to Israel. They will be part of the $3 billion the US gives to Israel every year.
7. Good Deal
Scott Tankel ,   Tallahassee   (01.08.12)
The vehicles will be practically free. Its cheaper for the U.S. to just dump them in the ocean than to take them back home. To sell them to Israel is a win-win, as the hummvees the IDF currently have break down every two days...
8. You are buying garbage..The americans cant do dilly today
Al   (01.08.12)
They produce junk and you will end up with junk. Go see what spare parts will cost you. Its not worth the trouble
9. HUMMVEES FROM IRAQ
Amnon ,   usa   (01.08.12)
I worked on them in Kuwait ,as a fighting vehicle there in nothing worst than hummvees, whit armor they are to heavy for the motor and the driver is loosing control of the vehicle on turning on a dime and because they are top heavy they are overturning ,the suspenssion is weak and because of the sand storms in Iraq most of the motors have to be replaced.
10.  I'd like one
Curtis ,   USA   (01.08.12)
If they're all that bad, how about dropping one off in my backyard.
11. Number 4

Imagine, Israel getting advice from the Islamic Republic of Canada.
12. #10, not that simple.
Henry from New York ,   USA   (01.08.12)
Do you want the ambulance model, the TOW missile one or the one that has a heavy machine gun at the back? =p
13. Hummers from Iraq
Eli ,   Modiin, Israel   (01.08.12)
I am all in favor of our domestic defense capabilities (Kfir, Merkava, Tavor, etc.), but this one can be a good deal. Israel has already a large number of Hummers in service, and those from Iraq can be (and probably will be) used for spare parts, perhaps, with exception of some with baby mileage. As a result of severe budget constrains, US is looking for inventive, no-cash solutions for foreign help; I expect the price of used Hummer to be very attractive,~10% of the new one. As far as the local APC industry is concerned, Israel has in fact none. A limited number of retired early versions of Merkava battle tank without the gun turret are converted into heavy APC called Namer.
14. At 3 miles to the gallon it's no wonder...

Roger, the US does not give GIVE israel 3 and a half billion dollars every year. You can easily find out the conditions that Israel has to meet to borrow the funds.

The Namer is a brand new vehicle based on the hull of a Merkava 4 its not a conversion, can thank Barak for that. They have opened a new plant in the US to build the Namer so the facilities in Israel can be dedicated to tank production & Namer can be paid for with military aid
