there is going to be only one state in the land of Israel. A jewish state. all arabs should be repatriated to the 22 arab states where they can implement their aspirations. Take hartman with you.
2. The longest lasting conflict in the world.
Michael ,   California, USA   (01.10.12)
There would be peace in the ME if Israelis and Arabs wanted it. There would be peace by now if either side wanted it. There will never be peace if Arabs and Israelis are left to accomplish it by themselves. The only way to bring peace is to impose it. The Great Powers have the means and strength. A lasting, secure peace in the Middle East can only be imposed by the Great Powers. Sof pasuk.
3. again stupid, naive, distorted socialist intellectual elite

but there will NEVER be any concession from the arabs that Jerusalem belongs to them, or a return to the 67 borders, or a "right to return" of all the millions of relatives that left 60 years ago which would turn Israel into an arab state. Why Rabbi Hartman postures this is beyond my ability to understand, the arabs want the Jews dead not next to them.

6. Partners for Peace
Gideon Reader   (01.10.12)
Why of course there are partners for peace. Listen,...I have contacts. you know what I mean. A brother-in-law, who once went drinking with, you know whatisname's cousin, who rented a flat from Shuki's ex mistress, who I know used to boff the janitor's wife's younger brother, when her husband was off at Miluim for a couple of weeks. so listen carefully. I'll only say this once and you did not get it from me, if you know what I mean.... Honduras has ratified it's non aggression and signed a peace agreement with Lichtenstein. It is expected to hold consideriing the quiet that has presided over their borders for an extended time. I cannot recall the last incident, and even googling Honduras Lichtenstein has NOT produced even one hit involving war drums.
7. What are you saying?
Yossi Bar Negev ,   Arad, Israel   (01.10.12)
I don't want to sound disrespectful to Rabbi Hartman, but this article is absolute "shtuyot" (שטויות). Simple answer, Rabbi Hartman: we have no peace partner and we have never had one. End of story.
8. piece partner

Gideon Reader   (01.10.12)
...All he is sayyyyying. Is give Peace a chance. He tried elenor Rigby but it did nate any sense. Come to think of it; neither does this. Now about that Pie in the Sky. I do so love green apple pie with a glass of cold milk. Or hot strong coffee. However my boy cat prefers Blueberry. So go figure. Arabs making peace and a cat that prefers Blueberry.
13. wow!!!!!!!
Steven ,   Tel Aviv   (01.10.12)
It is a good thing that hartman wasn't around 70 years ago and living in Poland. I can see him trying to convince everyone to take a holiday and relieve the stress of Warsaw and go to a new SPA that the loving Third Reich just open, called Auschwitz.... Seriously, hartman I'm building a bridge from Tel Aviv to Turkey are you interested investing in my new bridge. Let me know.

solomon ,   bklyn   (01.10.12)
Peace cannot be imposed. This has been proven thoughout the millenia. As soon as the arabs get close to peace {too close, for them} they run the other way. "Sof pasuk."
15. 1939 justice
zivron   (01.10.12)
THE JUST STRUCTURE IS THE REVERSE OF 1939 IN 2039 SEVENTY PERCENT JEWS THIRTY PERCENT ARABS WHO HAVE THE CAPACITY TO LIVE IN PEACE WITH THEIR NEIGHBOURS .
16. #14, Most peace "agreements" are imposed.
Michael ,   California, USA   (01.10.12)
The victorious side in a conflict imposes peace, obviously. But if there is no clear victor in a conflict, there may be a "cease fire" that holds for a long time, obviously also. Shalom Hartman's article has no been written by Carl Philipp Gottfried von Clausewitz and not by Niccolò di Bernardo dei Machiavelli. That's unfortunate. Between Israelis and Arabs there is not a clear victor. Israel cannot defeat 100 million Arabs. Neither could the Arabs defeat Israel in the past wars.As a result, there is no peace agreement and there will never be one without imposition from the Great Powers. Don't they have a public library in Brooklyn?

have no excuse, it was all recent history not some time ago, we all know it. or should and if you don't then read up on it.
19. Israel is fully prepared to offer peace for peace.
Chaim ,   Israel   (01.11.12)
Yet another worthless article by Harman. Does he ever write any other kind? Israel won't accept the lunacy of ceding our tiny land for a treaty or for any other reason. No other nation ever has. However, Israel is fully prepared to offer peace for peace.
20. Is there a peace partner
Alan Feinstein   (01.11.12)
Except there one demoninator here: The land of Israel belongs to the Jews!!!!
21. Michael #2 not even close
Gee ,   Zikron Yaakov   (01.11.12)
The Cold War lasted over 50 years, then there was the 100 Year War. California education sure isn't much or did you fail history?
22. Michael #16 get a clue
Gee ,   Zikron Yaakov   (01.11.12)
Must be that California education system again. Not all peace treaties have to be imposed. We have defeated the entire Arab World in 1948, 1956, 1967, 1973, and 1982. We can and have defeated them many times. Oh and by the way we were the clear victors. Do they even have history classes in California?

A cease fire did hold for a long time...sort of, until Nasser sent fedayin over the border and then nationalized the canal. I could not find an example of peace, true peace, lasting peace, being imposed unless it was by the victor. Maybe a library in California has an example...if there is any.

Imposed peace, true peace, lasting peace, by a third party is a non sequitur and non starter.

#16 & 23 - One might say that carter applied a lot of pressure to Menachem Begin that forced him to hand over the entire Sinai to Egypt for peace, "land for peace". In the first real election in the history of Egypt, the people of Egypt have spoken and elected a government that is hostile to Israel and have spoken out against their peace agreement with Israel and are considering not honoring it. We also had peace and a warm relation with Turkey and now we have a lot tension and threats of war coming from Turkey. We also had a warm relation with Iran until about 36 years ago. Now, they have threatening are existence with a nuclear attack. The man/women on the street in the arab countries don't want true peace and lasting with Israel and the Jews. Keep dreaming maybe it will become true in the mean time we have to stop imposing peace on people who have no interest in true peace.
26. #13 wow... really?

Rabbi, You said "The majority of Israelis have become increasingly skeptical of the readiness of Palestinian society for such {peace} moves. Whether this skepticism is justified, I do not know." You do not know if the skepticism is justified!!!?? If you profess such ignorance about our enemy's objectives, then you are either lying or extremely foolish. In any event, this shocking admission invalidates everything you say thereafter.
29. True, dependablem & lasting peace only between democracies
Joe ,   Canada   (01.11.12)
No reliable agreement can be achieved between two opposing parties if one of them is not democratic. In the case of the Palestinians they are not only driven by religious undemocratic tenets, they are violently divided internally & they are used as pawns by powerful extremist forces with their own agendas such as the Iranians & their proxies. Under these conditions peace negociations are always going to be fruitless & dangerous for Israel should it make the concessions the Palestinians request. What appears to be dilatory or evasive posture of Israel in dealing with the creation of the two states is just recognition of the fact that progress can not be achieved for the forseable future.
30. #21 and 22: Ded you see I said LASTING conflict.
Michael ,   California, USA   (01.11.12)
"Lasting" means NOW, the -ing suffix refers to the present tense.
