I'd say like in German with a Polish accent - "Guter Hund". :)
7. Haredim and dogs
N ,   Israel   (01.26.12)
But the one thing they forgot is that Haredim consider dogs to be impure and evil.. so it is pretty pointless, A haredi lying under rubble would most probably prefer to stay there, than be touched by an impure animal..
8. This is ridiculous.
Religious Jew ,   Israel   (01.26.12)
It's silly to train a rescue to understand yiddish. Even the Mea Sharim types have brians enough to scream for help in hebrew. They know hebrew, they just would rather not speak it, if their lives were in danger you can bet they're going to start speaking hebrew!!
9. 3 In Yiddish: U=I

10. What if the dog is a female?
JDE ,   Boston, USA   (01.27.12)
Does it have to ride in the back of the fire truck? Have they trained it to cross the street if it sees a male dog approaching?

Sarah B ,   U.S.A. / Israel   (01.27.12)
Dogs are very, very smart. You can teach them multiple languages, and they will understand commands in each of those languages. Learning a second language does not negate what was learned from the first. Trust me, I know. My golden is fluent in English and Hebrew, because he travels with us whenever we go from the U.S. to Israel or vice versa. No kennel for my angel! I'm betting I can teach him Yiddish and my husband can teach him Ladino!
13. Different languages
Shoshieb ,   Migdal, Israel   (01.28.12)
When my mother brought her labrador to Israel on Aliya, and when he was living with us after her death, my neighbors children used to bring their friends to the fence to see the dog that spoke English!
14. Dogs can not speak
Zev ,   Israel   (01.29.12)
They can follow a command and it has nothing to do with the language. To a dog it is like barking is to humans. Do French dogs bark in French. You can mix languages and talk to a dog Chinese or giberish as long as he/she associates the command with an action.
15. Are the dogs allowed to do their work in the nude?...
Border Collie Owner ,   Carmiel, Israel   (01.29.12)
Seriously, dogs do not understand words. They understand commands, which are partly composed of tones. A dog will obey a trainer who says "stay," but someone else who says "stay" to the dog in another tone will be ignored. A dog will also look for buried victims regardless of the language of the victim. Silly article.
16. you are wrong, Zev

I have two dogs, one that speaks hebrew and one that speaks english

STFU. We know you are a complete idiot; you do not have to keep on proving it.
21. To: No. 14
Sarah B ,   U.S.A. / Israel   (01.31.12)
Oh, I beg to differ. Dogs can speak wonderfully well. They are also smart; a quality which you do not appear to possess.
22. To: No. 15
Sarah B ,   U.S.A. / Israel   (01.31.12)
Wrong. Dogs understand words wonderfully well. You, as the owner of a border collie -- one of the smartest of breeds -- should have figured this out by now. It would appear that your dog is smarter than you.
23. I know 3 languages myself: Arf arf, woof woof, how how.

24. My dog knows Yiddish
Beth Goodtree ,   NYC, USA   (02.03.12)
And here I was thinking I had the only dog trained in Yiddish! I did it so that no one else could give him a command. My dog, Deezl, is a service dog. He's my Walking Assistance dog and I'd be in a heap of trouble if I'm hanging on to his harness and he was distracted by someone calling to him using English commands. Meanwhile, I'd like to take this opportunity to thank Hashem for Deezl. So... thank you for Deezl!
