1. RECOMMENDED READING, THE RETURN, BY SONIA LEVITIN
David ,   PALOS VERDES, CA USA   (01.18.12)
SHE NEEDS TO READ THE BOOK THE RETURN, WRITTEN BY SONIA LEVITIN. DAVID
2. Ethiopian Aliyah
A Jerusalemite ,   Jerusalem, Israel   (01.18.12)
This is soooo reminiscent of the Moroccan aliyah! How many of you are old enough to remember how badly they were treated, how they were looked down upon and discriminated against? The Absorption Minister of course wasn't living here in those days - perhaps she should read a history book or two...
3. No to Racism but No to Dependancy
CultureofDependancy ,   Jerusalem Israel   (01.18.12)
Many Israelis cannot understand why so many Ethiopians totally abandoned all Jewish tradition after arriving after being lovingly cared for especially by the National Religious Public . Racism in housing cannot be tolerated but neither can a culture of dependancy which may have been created when the Ethiopian immigrants were put on the fast track with many perks not received by any other immigrants This could get ugly.
4. This one side of the story
Gene   (01.18.12)
Shouldn't we hear another side BEFORE making judgements? And just a question: how many of you, who condemn housing discrimination, lived on one floor with Ethiopian immigrants? Maybe you would have different opinion then - what do you think?
5. IS IT FAIR TO ISRAELIS?
Yossi ,   Tel Aviv   (01.18.12)
WHAT IS UNCLEAR TO ME, IS WHY US ISRAELIS BORN AND RAISED HERE, 3 YRS ARMY SERVICE + 25 YRS ARMY RESERVES SERVICE, DO NOT GET THE RIGHTS, A 65 YR OLD IMMIGRANT GETS WITHOUT WORKING EVEN 1 DAY HERE.
6. Aliyah&Absorption: Leshon Kodesh AND PRONOUCEABLE Yisraelit.
Jerry ,   The Netherlands   (01.18.12)
7. Ethiopians are treated quite well in Israel
John Casterline ,   Goose Island USA   (01.18.12)
During my visits to Israel I observed that Ethiopians both Inside the IDF and outside are treated quite well . I enjoyed knowing them and working with them . Its quite different in the United States especially in New Jersey where innocent blacks are harrassed constantly and slaughtered like cattle. I knew several black girls who refuse to drive their cars in New Jersey because of the constant harrassment .
8. allow mistakes
zivron   (01.18.12)
one ought allow people even yes ministers to make the occasional gaffe when they have hangovers or are under other pressures like withdrawal from benzodiazepines or hormone fluctuations there human error prone .The ethiopians are not perfect either no one is .Rebuke thy neighbour lest you hate him[HER] in your heart,
9. Sofa must be fired!
Yossef   (01.18.12)
10. We brought them here!
Rafi ,   Raanana, Israel   (01.18.12)
Government officials love to great Olim at the airport. After that they can fend for themselves. What a joke. We need to complete the job of absorption. That means education, housing and jobs.
11. to Yossi, tel aviv
Rosie ,   london   (01.18.12)
I should think that 3O odd years ago Israel should have given benefits and assistance to destitute, 65 year old Jews being airlifted from a desperate situation. I'd imagine that their children have since then either worked in Israel or been in the army. Why would you begrudge their parents the support they recieved? Immigrating is no easy feat & being such a distinctive population could not have made things any easier.
12. Israeli discrimination
Trev ,   Canada   (01.19.12)
I thought Israel was the land of the Jews. I guess black Jews aren't welcome.
13. I knew this would happen 15 years ago when they were
Moshe ,   Usa   (01.19.12)
brought in. You need to teach them a lesson that Israel will not accept self pity.
14. #3, exactly what "perks" are you talking about?
Danny   (01.19.12)
15. #12, yeap thats why Israel brought them home
Danny   (01.19.12)
Only time black people have been brought from Africa outside the framework of slavery. If Israel really didn't welcome them all she had to do was not lift a finger. But instead - at great risk - she carried out a secret operation to bring those ethiopians to Israel.
16. Total hippocracy: no comparison to how ungrateful
5th generation ,   Israel   (01.19.12)
many of Sofia's fellow Soviet immigrants are in Israel. She's either in a total state of entitlement, denial, projection, or worse - thinks Ethiopians are even lower than all the other lowly Israelis.
17. To all the complainers
Israel Israeli   (01.19.12)
Israel spent vast resources to both bring them here and provide for them once here. Mistakes have been made but to start shouting racism is just wrong.
18. #17 not true, just look around you
Noa   (01.19.12)
How many Ethiopian cleaners do you see, and how many Ethiopian lawyers, teachers, or doctors? You agree with me that this has nothing to do with the IQ, I suppose, so there must be something the State of Israel can do to change this.
19. #9 IS RIGHT !
Stan ,   Israel   (01.19.12)
In case you don't know, SOFA LANDWER is our arrogant minister of Immigration.
20. A more than typical facist attitude.
Josh   (01.20.12)
The argument that the state reached out to Jews and therefore equality is not a high priority for the state is a joke. Unfortunately it is shared all too much by "natives". It shows how pervasive the racist attitudes are that anyone in politics would accept it. Equality and better education by leaders as well as the religious who often look for some pseudo fire to put out just to get followship. The Ethiopians enhance Israel not degrade it. Start speaking this from the bimah.
21. Housing grants to buy are not open to every Israeli.
Jo   (01.20.12)
I think the government is trying but asking to be in the same situation as every one else, considering the huge gap they come from, is not realistic. It takes time and work, by the community itself, and it may take a generation. It is a very hard task to absorb a complete community and get it right and please everyone. Some of gifts the government gives is the grant to buy housing, sometimes nearly a 100% of the mortgage, something which clearly many Israelis struggle to do. Where you can buy often depends on where you can afford, for everyone.
22. It's always both ways
Herut, Ethiopian ,   N.Y.   (01.20.12)
I understand, but don't you think you are hurting yourselves Ynet, you are being cheated or cheating.
23. So where's my post on this subject
Herut, Ethiopian ,   N.Y.   (01.20.12)
So where's my original post, it would be nice if you could post it, if not well,,,, thanks
24. #5 shame on you.
nibor ,   israel   (01.20.12)
Israel is a homeland to all Jews, regardless of age and where they were born. Stop talking like a gentile.
25. job not copleted
OlaHungaria ,   Rehovot   (01.21.12)
Well they won't complete the job, the officials will turn back to their offices, the Oleh is here, landed in peace, he's not important anymore. One more in the statistics. So were 5 years ago i made aliyah, and so will be in the future too. No matter if black or white, we're a kind of B quality citizens.
26. joke
DC, USA   (01.21.12)
Hey John, note the word "visit" in other words you have a rose colored view of life there. Anyone that thinks America is the most racist place on earth has not lived elsewhere in the world and this is coming from a black person.
