1. take your garbage back to America
Josh ,   Toronto, Canada   (01.26.12)
Israeli's know what true Judaism is, it's either real or fake...this one is fake!
2. go back to america
Larry ,   Los Angeles   (01.26.12)
We don't need watered down Judaism here. The masoreti movement and the conservative movement are populare since they will include non Jews as Jews. Other than that, they are loosing their popularity amongst the young.
3. Snotty orthodox
Susya Bar Dror ,   IL   (01.26.12)
They treat non-orthodox equal to gentiles. Therefore, is it true, that according to orthodox jews in the Shoah about 3-4 Million jews only have been murderred, since 2-3 Million murered where non-orthodox?
4. # 1 & # 2
Susya Bar Dror ,   IL   (01.26.12)
you act exactly as the classical jewhaters. I assume you are orthodox and believe in your own idols. I doubt your jewishness. You too, go back from were you entered this world.
5. Unfortunately for the conservatives...
Tuvia Schertzman,MD ,   Betar Ilit   (01.26.12)
They are in violation of normative Jewish law. THanks to their low birthrates, they will soon be a very distict minority among the Jewish people at large. Many of their followers have no idea how to interact with the 80% of traditional to "orthodox" community of Jews of Eretz Yisrael.
6. Moshe was Orthodox
Klutz ,   Shtreimelville   (01.26.12)
Of course, it was the Artscroll Siddur and Chumash that was revealed to Moshe.
7. I wish there were a Conservative synagogue where I live!
Chaya ,   Tel Aviv   (01.26.12)
There is already a lot of negative feelings towards the Ultra-Orthodox in this country; so they knew they had better keep quiet about this!
8. Hey Josh and Larry, waddya mean "back"?!?!
Brian Cohen ,   Judean Peoples Front   (01.26.12)
Um, fellas...waddya mean "back to America"?!?!? I live here in Israel....you two dudes live in North America. I have no problem with Conservative Jews here in aretz koidesh, and hold them no ill will whatsoever. I personally think they've gone a little overboard on the egality thing, but by and large I appreciate the fact that many of them keep kosher, know how to daven, and keep Shabbat and chagim. What are you two dudes doing preaching from over there about how we people should behave over here? Last I checked, Israel was a free country with freedom of religion - just like in America and Canada. You don't like that?!?! And Larry, if you don't want any "watered down Judaism here" - what are you doing in L.A.? I expect you to head to the aliya office first thing in the morning to put your money where your mouth is. Ditto for you, Josh. You obviously have no idea what Israelis know.
9. @ 5
myrtil ,   israel   (01.26.12)
Maybe you did not get it right, but "Masorti" means "traditional", so what is the problem with us?
10. Why not call it a minyan?
grandma ,   MD   (01.27.12)
Using the phrase "Masorti quorum" is another way of delegitimatizing Jews who consider themselves Masorti. I'm sure the participants in this prayer service would describe this service as a minyan not a quorum. Masorti rabbis and congregants are Jews and should be treated with respect by secular and orthodox alike. If it was an orthodox service, it would be called a minyan. For many non-Anglos, Masorti is meeting a definite need in Israel. So why not let their service be called a minyan?
11. @9
Serge ,   Montreal, Canada   (01.27.12)
Masorti means traditional, but Conservative Judaism isn't -- it's the creation of a bunch of people who, in the 19th century, had the arrogance to decide that they knew better than those who had come before them, and were going to singlehandedly revise the tradition. It is that arrogance that engenders so much ill will.
12. Joke
Yoni the JEW ,   Jewish Homeland   (01.27.12)
13. 4 and 9
Larry ,   Los Angeles   (01.27.12)
14. to 4 & 9: losers
Larry ,   Los Angeles   (01.27.12)
I have lived in Israel for 35 years. I am from LA. Here the religious community is growing - as in LA. The conservatives are stagnating since few of the youth have any desire to join. My relatives tell me what is really happening in their synagogue because, yes, we are friendly and do communicate even though I am religious and they are conservative and reform. Don't kid yourselves, the conservative and reform movements are slowly dying. Their children marry goyim, barely celebrate any holidays, look at themselves as Americans first and Jews lastly. the Religious is growing stronger just by birth rate and dedication to the Torah. Good luck to you losers!
15. To #10-
Israel   (01.27.12)
... Because this article was written in English, and quorum is minyan in English. Duh.
16. Ultraorthodox perceive Masorti as an enemy
Susya Bar Dror ,   IL   (01.27.12)
because Masorti represents jewishness at its very best. On the other hand, non-orhodox perceive orthodox jews as a sect, living with subsidies paid by non-orthodox, agressive against the rest of the world, causing sexual and financial scandals and as social parasites in Israel.
17. Orthodox hatred against Masorti
Maximilian Teusch ,   FL   (01.27.12)
reminds me of the time before the destruction of the 2nd Temple. As citizen of the Principality of Liechtenstein and strictly unaffiliated with a religion, I remind you that the destruction of the 2nd Temple was the result of blind hatred of Jews against Jews. Shabbat Shalom.
18. Masorti praying at Knesset
Larry ,   philadelphia, US   (01.27.12)
IF the arabs wanted to conquer Israel, they would just make peace and let the jews of Israel tear each other apart on topics such as Masorti services and the rights of women.
19. masorti divides the jews and blames them
moron ,   galut   (01.27.12)
thedistort the gender issue to raise funds for their seminaries and are just as fanatical as other expressions only for their own vanity not for israel or the jews or hashem..the result is assimilation. religious have more children and this will settle the matter eventually
20. It's a long walk to the nearest Orthodox shul
BH ,   Iowa   (01.27.12)
180 miles/300 km. Not everyone lives in a big city.
21. Secular Hypocrisy
Moisha Kapoir ,   Nanuet USA   (01.27.12)
Why are secular Jews that do not believe in G-D altogether support Conservative Jewish values? If they do not believe in an Orthodox G-D they also surely do not believe in a Conservative G-D either. Pitting the Orthodox against the Conservatives serves their goals of destroying the Jewish Religion, their REAL goal.
22. Since when is bringing together is a "rift"?!
Carl ,   USA   (01.27.12)
Wow, "glorification of women... sow[s] the rift among the people of Israel." Seems to me that bringing people together as equals is quite the opposite of sowing a rift. Keeping women as second-class and prohibiting their participation is a division.
23. Flash in the pan Judaism will never last
Al   (01.27.12)
Thats how it is and thats how its going to be. Either you are pregnant or not. The sight of women putting on Teffilin makes me cringe and I'm not even religious. The idea of women carrying a Torah save for maybe Simchas Torah is at best debatable. In my gut it just doesn't do it for me and many many others. Women have their functions in Judaism and men have theirs. Its like men cant have kids and women dont have .... As a previous TB said, the nouveau orthoquack dont have kids and so they will be history.
24. number 1
Ratch ,   Israel   (01.28.12)
If there's no garbage to take back, it's already there- in Toronto- called Josh.
25. a dying breed by their own admission
Moshe ,   Washington State USA   (01.29.12)
Saw a copy of the US conservative movement magazine in a waiting room recently, much angst that their numbers are shrinking markedly year by year. Apparently their youngsters grown up and either leave for orthodoxy to practice what the movement preaches in theory (kashrut, Shabbat etc although to lesser levels), or leave the other way to reform or no practice. I can't recall the numbers of the reduction over the past decade, but it was huge.
26. # 25 you are totally wrong
Susya Bar Dror ,   IL   (01.29.12)
the contrary is true. The Masorti Movement is growing. Its memebers are religious. In fact more religious then those who are discriminating and bad mouthing Masorti.
27. Baseless hatred
Lisa ,   Jerusalem, Israel   (01.30.12)
Ugh.. so much hatred coming out from these comments. Really Orthodox folk, if your movement leaves you hating other Jews with such passion, you need to realize that your movement has gone awry.
28. Masorti/Knesset
Dave ,   Philadelphia   (01.31.12)
so much for loving your neighbor as yourself..
29. Sinat Chinam - destruction of Israel
Michael Waterman ,   Encino, California   (02.01.12)
In 70 CE, the Temple was destroyed due to baseless hatred between the various "groups" of Jews. Here we go again. The Masorti believe in tolerance and that Jews should live a life of Menschlichkeit. I'm not sure where it says that God wants us all to studay Torah, avoid work, avoid defending our homeland ... and dressing like it is 1865 Poland in the snow (when it is 90degreess in Jerusalem in 2012. Does God really want his "religious Jews" spitting on other Jews and making Jewish women second class? What's next? A chador for ultra-orthodox women? Keep going forward Masorti - help bring Israel and Judaism into the 21st century. Judaism is too important to leave it locked in the 19th century!
30. #5 & #14
JDE ,   Boston, USA   (02.01.12)
"THanks to their low birthrates, they will soon be a very distict minority among the Jewish people at large." "Don't kid yourselves, the conservative and reform movements are slowly dying... Good luck to you losers!" Same nonsense you people have been spouting for 200 years. Meanwhile, we're still here, but Orthodoxy is in deep trouble. The Haredim have outbred the Modern Orthodox, and are destroying themselves. When they go - which will likely be within a generation - they'll be taking Orthodoxy with them - and you have no one to blame but yourselves.
