1. Sanctions ? How about embarrassment and punishment ?
Barbara ,   Haifa Israel   (01.26.12)
Why does United States let this clown into the US for giving speeches? Don't let him in. Don't let him travel freely. Embarrass him in the media. We all know that these fanatic ideas are coming from Ahmadinejad - the grown child that wants attention. We need to simultaneously ignore and embarrass him.
2. So..

Howard Truthhurts ,   USA   (01.26.12)
As my father used to say, "if it's so good, why is it so bad" translation...if the sanctions don't bother Iran, why offer to negotiate?
5. Not bothered?
Gee ,   Zikron Yaakov   (01.26.12)
Over 21% inflation, currency has lost over 40% of it's value and the sanctions haven't even begun. Your ass is toast Iran.

12. The oil embargo will hurt Iran because in accepting gold
Rivkah   (01.26.12)
for oil from China and India, Iran has broken an OPEC treaty from the Nixon Administration. Nixon agreed to take the US dollar off the silver standard in exchange for an OPEC agreement to allow oil purchases only in US dollars. It appears that renigging on that agreement leads to war against that country to protect the US dollar and the US economy...Iraq...Libya...now Iran. War is coming, sadly.
13. Barbara I agree ...
J Galt ,   Hidden Valley, USA   (01.26.12)
that this mongrel should not be allowed in the USA to speak at the UN. But I , as many of us do, feel that the UN should no longer be int the USA and vice versa. This mongrel's goal is to bring on the 12 th imam at any cost. His desire to negotiate is simply a delay tactic which US President Soetoro will probably applaude.

We were off the silver standard before Nixon. We quit using silver in our coins when Lyndon Johnson was president. That is why our clad coins came to be called Johnson Sandwiches. I believe the Federal Reserve Bank did away with basing our money on silver. That is why we have inflation. When we used gold and silver to back our money we did not have inflation much because it kept our currency stable. Now that the government can print more money whenever they want to our money has nothing to back it up and will become worth less and less.
15. #6 yes you are very childish
Gee ,   Zikron Yaakov   (01.26.12)
New York City is located within the United States of America and yes the US does have the right to bar any foreigners it cares to. As for move the UN - only about 95% of Americans want it gone or could care less if it left.
16. Don't you get it yet?
BEN JABO ,   ISRAEL   (01.26.12)
Obama is in cahoots with Iran, his fellow Muslim's Obama is didling while Iran is building their nukes
17. 14 Eaglebeak, Left Coast, USA: You are correct. Wikipedia
Rivkah   (01.26.12)
says the silver certificates were made until 1994 so that would be during the Johnson Administration that silver backed dollars stopped being printed. At another site, Wikipedia says the OPEC agreement for the making the US dollar the reserve currency for trading in oil was made during the early 1970's which was the Nixon Administration.
18. Indeed it won't!
Gunnar ,   Gothenburg, Sweden   (01.26.12)
Not as long as Russia nad China keep supporting Teheran. And since these two countries clearly do not respond to sucking up, how about trying a different approach?? I suggest that all of Europe, along with Israel, the United States and all others who so wish, recognize an independent Tibet and an independent Chechnya. Preferably today!!!

I was not aware of the OPEC agreement. 1964 was the last year we minted silver coins here. Things were better then. Television sets were still made here and we had not given away our manufacturing to China. When we helped Germany rebuild after the war they got new equipment and we made do with our old equipment. We proabably did the same with Japan but I'm not sure. They started becoming a threat to our auto industry in the early 60's partly because of that and partly because U.S. car manufactures built what they wanted to build and not what the people were asking for. We had nothing to compare with the Volkswagen Beetle but Germany and Japan were happy to fill the gap. The last company to build TV sets here was Curtis Mathiss ( I may not have spelled that right ) but that ended when the Russians shot down that KAL airliner and Mr. Mathiss was on it.
20. 17 correction: Silver certificates were made until 1964.
