Language barrier ??? Funny, in the beginning of modern Israel those pale faced, blue-grey eyed Jewish settlers from Europe didn't know Hebrew, 64 years later native Israelis prefere to communicate, educate themselves in their native language and stick with locals. Blood is thicker than water ,...

forgive me, which of the native American languages are you using in your comment?
3. HEBREW LEARNING DIFFICULTY !
Mark ,   T.a. Israel   (01.29.12)
THIS DIFFICULTY DERIVES FROM THE ARCHAIC HEBREW ALPHABET ! THE YOUNG STUDENTS AND MANY ADULT PEOPLE MAKE ERROR IN WRITING IN HEBREW JUST BECAUSE OF THIS FACT ! EXPLAIN ME WHY THE SCIENTIFIC ARTICLES ARE WRITTEN IN ENGLISH AND WHY THE MEDICINAL PRESCRIPTIONS TOO USE LATIN ALPHABET TO NAME THE MEDICINE ! EVERY COUNTRY HAS HAD THEIR LANGUAGE COMMITY TO IMPROVE THEIR LANGUAGE FOR THE BENEFIT OF THEIR CITIZENS ! A GOOD EXAMPLE IS THE ALPHABETIC REFORM OF GREAT STATEMAN ATATURK WHO CHANGED THE ARABIC ALPHABET TO LATIN ALPHABET ! THUS A 90 % IGNORANT OF TURKISH PEOPLE SUDDENLY ENTERED TO XXth CENTURY AS A VIBRANT SECULAR AND ILLUMINATED CITIZENS ! IF ISRAEL WILL MAKE SUCH A REFORM BELIEVE ME ALL THE DIASPORA WILL MAKE ALIYA TO OUR BEAUTIFUL COUNTRY !

Arabic is a lot closer to Hebrew than I think you realize. It should be relatively easy for native Arab speakers to learn, if they would bother to try. These students will come back to Israel and discover that the laughable standards of PA "higher education" will leave them ill-suited to pursue their expected career paths in Israel, because Israel does have high standards. Oh well. Maybe they will stay in the PA.
7. This is terrible
Abed ,   Nazareth   (01.29.12)
Instead of putting their blind faith (and votes) into leaders like Zoabi, Israeli Arabs need to start inspiring in the community youth a sense of Israeli pride. Maybe some Arabs feel distanced from Jewish Israel, but we should still be proud of it. The Arab sense of alienation is a two way street. If we don't accept the state, how can we accept it to accept us? I can't understand why anyone would want to go to school in the PA. We need to start a Zionist Arab party to promote loyalty, pride and service to Israel among the Arab community. Things are getting rediculous.
8. Hebrew??????? Real Hebrew?????
Basheer ,   L.A.   (01.29.12)
Well anyway Arabic is a little more International you would think in the region and worldwide in general. There wold be no Hebrew if not for the living speakers of Arabic. the Hebrew of today is pretty much a bastard language(no pun) where phonetically it defies the grammar/phonetics of the ancient Akkaddian languages and speakers of same. The European's inability to speak Semitic languages is this resultant modern day Hebrew.
9. Lower standards? they are ready for Harvard

1300 future jerks, future leaders of the islamic world. It took them only 65 years not to learn hebrew (great similarity to arabic)

Hey! Come down! In Germany scientific publications are written in English, too. As well in France, Italy, Switzerland, Austria, Spain, Portugal, Poland, Sweden, Norway, Finland............. So it probably is not the alphabet! By the way, Russians study in Russia and they get an excellent education even though they are writing Cyrillic! Chinese study in China! And their Alphabet is really painful! The Hebrew alphabet is absolutely okay! If you don't use it, because you live in an Arab sphere, then you have a problem!

Even those dark-skinned, dark-eyed, dark-hair Jews who were kicked out of the arab countries in 1948 learned Hebrew. They now speak both Arabic and Hebrew. And so Hebrew has returned to where it was spoken thousands of years ago; a few thousand years before Arabic was spoken any where in the world.

Wrong! The Hebrew of today is recognized by linguists the world over as the direct heir to the Hebrew spoken in this land thousands of years ago. Actually if not for Hebrew there wouldn't be any Arabic, not vice versa.
15. 14 - Actually if not for Hebrew there wouldn't be any Arabic

The Hebrew language was adopted from Canaites, Hebrew alphabet from an Assyrians they were Semites an Arabs and natives not an impostors.

You just shot yourself in the foot. You used the word "alphabet." Contrary to what some think, the word "alphabet" does not come from the Greek "alpha" and "beta." It comes straight from the Hebrew language. The first two letters of the Hebrew alphabet? That would be "aleph" and "bet." Put that in your smoke and pipe it!
18. no dude
Elieazer ,   Kfar   (01.29.12)
Ivrit is the bastard of Hebrew. The language Jews have been praying with since the beganing. They took the language from the prayers and the Books and added words to it so it could be spoken everyday.

yael ,   israel   (01.29.12)
This situation does not say much for israel school stystem。 maybe a real overhaul is required so that israeli high school graduates will be able to enter israeli academic instituions
20. Get Real
Arielush ,   Ramat Ha Golan   (01.29.12)
As someone who teaches, in an Israeli college and works with these students I can see many of their problems. * Firstly language is a big problem. Imagine having to cope with two foreign languages to get a BA. In order to graduate they must obtain a certain level in academic English which isn't easy because it is taught in Hebrew. * Israeli institutions are all organized around the Jewish calendar. During the month of Ramadan it is extremely difficult for them. I see first hand the disadvantages my Arab speakers have. However, I think it is important to make room for them in our colleges. There is nothing more encouraging than seeing a religious Jew, a Muslim and a secular working in a group together.
21. Another misleading title by LIE-NET!
Mark ,   Ohio   (01.29.12)
1."Israeli students, mostly from the Bedouin sector." They are not Israeli! They are Arabs! They don't see themselves as Israeli's but LIE-NET likes to ram it down their throats. 2.There is no such thin as "west bank"! Only Judea and Samaria!
22. I dont see the problem here.
rebecca ,   Modiin   (01.29.12)
These kids are brought up in Israel but cant speak Hebrew well enough or do not meet the requirements. The first might be a schooling problem, but the latter is not a problem. It's a normal state of affairs. Not everyone can get into higher education. It sounds like they want lower standards for these people. We've seen that in South Africa and it's a disaster. Please dont go there. If kids want to get into any institution and the dont qualify then they either need to accept that, or do a bridging course. Lots of Anglos here do bridging courses to bring their Hebrew up to university levels.
23. # 11 YAEL !
Mark ,   T.a. Israel   (01.29.12)
My problem is that I am old and can not write in Hebrew ! Here in Israel there thousands people like me who find difficult the Hebrew Alphabet and can not write a petition in Hebrew then the English comes to help them even in judiciary cases ! We are a part of Western Civilisation and I do not care about Cyrillic. Chinese Japon Alphabet ! The Answer is in your quotation that all scientific papers are written in English ! Why not in other languages cited sbove ? Why the Western World is superior in all Fields to the rest of the world .? Because the Latin Alphabet is easy to write and communicate between them ! I repeat again I see a lot of people here in Israel who make orthographic mistakes ! It is also very important for P,R. and hasbara and Tourism that the rest of the World would understand us better once we make the alphabetic Reform! Shalom !
24. Mark in T.A. not quite right
David N. ,   Haifa, ISRAEL   (01.29.12)
With respect, Mark, there is nothing especially difficult about the Hebrew alphabet. It all depends what you are used to, and from what age. Millions of Americans can't read the Roman alphabet that English uses. So what? Also, this is a myth that the western world is superior in ALL fields, or even that the so-called western world is a single entity. As a research and medical librarian for years I can tell you also that many superior peer-reviewed articles are not written in English, and there are top quality journals not published in English. And we Jews are not westerners or easterners, but both, and a mix as well. We often out-do the western world! Even Sephardic Jews! And by the way, the Cyrillic aphabet was designed frm Greek letters, which came from the orient, same source as old Hebrew and Phoenician letters. The Latin or Roman alphabet is totally middle eastern in origin. That's languages 101level of Knowlege. The west has borrowed heavily from the east.

michael Pielet ,   israel   (01.29.12)
these are not Israelies.
26. Arab education of a lower std
Rochelle ,   Jo'burg S. Africa   (01.29.12)
According to the report, ....main reason for the sharp increase is the admission requirements in Israeli colleges, as well as a difficulty with the Hebrew language and psychometric exams. " Really what is being said is the standard of education under Arab control is lower than that of Israel. Why do the Arabs not try to raise their standard instead of lowering it?

You and your ilk deny the Jews’ history, their holy places, their very existence. Now you add to that denial of their language. Thank you for again demonstrating why there is no peace in the ME; you have to stop dealing in your wishful thinking fantasies.

solomon ,   bklyn   (01.29.12)
Unlike the "Pals", Israel is not continuing along the path of getting rid of the "other". Jews know what that's like, having been the 'other' themselves. Arabs are citizens of Israel. All citizens of Israel should contribute. If not in the IDF, then in public service. In fact, you ignore those arabs in diplomatic posts, and especially the Druze who serve in the army.
30. #23 Hey Mark
Mark ,   U.S.   (01.29.12)
Just think our Yeshua of this day speaks English, and a Semitic tongue, wouldn't he have to speak the lingua franca of the world. I mean if you believe in the Moshiach. All prophets have spoken the Language(s) of their day.
