vors could get all the love and care they need. Unfortunately we are a society living in shadow of existential threat ourselves. I wonder if there was that much strenght left over, after our own wars &scars. One could argue, that even today's Israelis are survivors, we all are compared to the French. What is painful today is the fact that present-day economy, that apparently is doing soooo well is dragging feet providing help to these few people left. "Human Dust" they used to call them.....and then there are our own banks..and the restitutions!

No need to denigrate those who went through something we know nothing about. We shouldn't compare tragedies, thinking there can only be one 'worst' tragedy. That being said, what Israel has gone through is a life of existential threats. One difference is that Israel was able to defend itself. Another is that as few friends as Israel may have, those in the concentration camps had fewer. Another is that what Israel has gone through was known by the world. When the survivors (and those killed) were in the camps, they were a secret that the world didn't want to believe when confronted with reality. As helpless as Israel may have been (and it was never totally so), the concentration camp prisoners were even more so. This is the main difference.

Great short article, I too am a second generation holocaust survivor born in linz Austria. My mother who is a Auschwitz survivor is 90 years old and to date still suffers many of the symptoms which you described, the only difference is that we were able to receive wonderful assistance from various mental health organizations that are specific to holocaust survivors in the USA. I am thankful for the American way of understanding the survivors issues. I sympathize with those that are not able to receive the needed help in Israel when dealing with their past live traumas.
