1. that's what the IAF got 39 years ago
observer ,   Egypt   (02.05.12)
on October 14 1973, Israeli Air Force fighters, attacking the Egyptian air base in Mansura, were intercepted by the Egyptian Air Force. On that day, 160 jet fighters, most belonging to Israel, battled for a record of 53 minutes over the Nile Delta town of Al-Mansoura. Despite the numerical and qualitative superiority of the Israeli warplanes, 18 Israeli planes were downed. The rest retreated. Egypt announced the loss of six planes, only three of which fell to Israeli fire.

4. Attacking iran
Ma. Rabbi ,   USA   (02.05.12)
is a good idea and neccessary one. However, there is the very serious problem of the thousands of rockets Hezbollah has pointed at Israel. Therefore, Israel must first attack Hezbollah and destroy their rockets. Then go and bomb Iran.
5. What happened with the other three?
bob96 ,   Tel Aviv, Israel   (02.05.12)
That's typical arab statistics, same as Hamas, that, after a heavy bombing from the IAF, says there were TWO casualties... both children (children in Gaza have a bizarre way to get into fire...) But aside fron that, I'm curious... if the IAF didn't shot down all six planes, but they went down, anyway, what happened to the other three? The ran out of gas? Metal fatigue? Maybe the pilots couldn't stand the pressure and went bonkers... Could you enlighten me?

Take urgent note of the following: 1) Rush the product of additional iron dome batteries to the field where the plant is ordered to triple shift production. 2) bring back General Gallant to lead a plant to destroy hezbollah's armaments , and key personnel. 3) set up a plan for iran and practise it repeatedly till is ready to go. 4) Do not inform the US in advance as obama will leak it to russia and turkey which compromise the plan 5) Assign operatives to render the iranian hierarchy ill.

9. #1 Mubarak's description was meant to glorify his role
Alan ,   SA   (02.05.12)
as Commander of Airforce on that occassion. It isMubarak's version you refer to ,not so? Accoding to Shahdan El-Shazli, daughter of the former Egyptian military Chief of Staff Saad el-Shazly, Mubarak altered the representation of a number of events pertaining to the 1973 war to show a magnified role for himself. In the Egyptian newspaper Almasry Alyoum (26 Feb 2011), she claimed that Mubarak altered documents and photographs
10. #4 is correct
Jake ,   USA   (02.06.12)
Israel would be wise to launch a full fledged assault on Hezbollah, and retake Southern Lebanon. Then, from a formidable position of strength, Israel should declare war on Iran - not the nuclear sites - the government.
11. Nice Try #1
Yossi ,   Haifa, Israel   (02.06.12)
I wouldn't trust Egyptian military stats if my life depended on it. Even Egyptian commanders made the same complaints. Shazli, for instance had nothing nice to say about his superiors, and he was supposed to be your most brilliant commander. Secondly, you're also forgetting that in prep for '73 Egypt made it a point to increase their SAM coverage, which severely limited what the IAF could do without ground support. If you want to brag about anything, it should be that Israeli officials were too stubborn to listen to their own intelligence and commanders. The only real superiority Egypt ever achieved in '73 was the initial push over the Suez and Eastward through the Sinai, mainly due to the lack of man power and instruction on the Israeli side, combined with the use of Russian anti-tank weaponry. And how did that all turn out in the end for you?
12. #1 Observer: as usual - pure 100% fabrication
Rafi ,   US   (02.06.12)
whatever planes Israel lost during the '73 War was due to ground fire/ SAM's, primarily in the vicinity of the Canal. Apparently your tools as an "observer" are a walking cane and a seeing-eye dog. Keep looking for the truth... you haven't found it yet.
13. loose goose
nospam   (02.06.12)
He may look meticulous by Sharon' s kibbutz standard, but frankly to claim meticulousness he should first got his jacket ironed and hair done. Nor would I trust him any more than any of those career politicos admitting weaker body- wise females to drive fighters jet.
14. The post at No. 1 ...
Sarah B ,   U.S.A. / Israel   (02.06.12)
... is a very disingenuous attempt by "observer" to take credit for material he clearly did not author. Where I come from, that's called plagiary. I have often cautioned him to attribute the websites or the authors from which he co-opts material, but he consistently refuses to do that. When he posts such co-opted material, he comes across as a parrot. When he posts original -- poorly written -- material, he comes across as an idiot. Too bad he persists in stealing material from fraudulent websites. Too bad he appears to have forgotten that Israel crossed the Suez Canal, and stood poised to march on Cairo with absolutely nothing standing in their way. Too bad he also appears to have forgotten that Israel had cut the supply lines and completely encircle the Egyptian Third Army. We could have left them to die of thirst in the desert. Maybe next time -- and there will be a next time -- our humanitarian impulses will have dulled somewhat.
15. Pay attention to the details
Avi ,   NYC, US   (02.06.12)
When Eshel prepares his perfect attack plan on Iran, will the plan include the option of evacuation of ALL Israeli citizens to Europe, or are we going to have to watch the US helicopters evacuating Netanyahoo's family and some tycoons while the rest of the Israelis stay for the killing fields?
16. How the attack should happen
Vlad   (02.06.12)
Land bases and submarines can disable the main, exposed nuclear sites, while a small squadron of IAF planes, flying from a refueling base secretly set up in Saudi Arabia, use bunker-busters to hit Iran's fortified, underground nuke facilities. IMI has produced a bomb capable of penetrating through many meters of solid concrete, which was used during Operation Cast Lead.

19. Attack
Gene Graczyk ,   Santa Rosa, CA USA   (02.06.12)
Can you seriously believe that an attack on Iran will be solved with a five day blitz followed by whining pleas at the UN for a brokered truce? Oh, and add in attacks on Syria and Lebanon and Gaza (again) which will of course be included. If Israel starts a regional war, there is little the rest of the world, war weary already and quite broke, will be able to do. You will have to fight this one and pay for it yourselves--and suffer the consequences. Israel has shown nothing but contempt for the UN for years now. No help there, I'm afraid, thanks to Avigdor & Co.. OH--and how will you deal with the economic collapse that is sure to follow immediately? Have you enough saved for that rainiest of days?
20. entrapping Israel's troops in 73
observer ,   Egypt   (02.06.12)
1-suez-cairo road was under the egyptians' control as there were full two divisions 16th mechanized and 4th armored repulsed any israeli forces tried to get closer to the road as the israeli commander who fought the war say. 2-the israeli forces were the forces entrapped as the rear of israeli wedge was under control of the egyptians as Sharon failed for three times to occupy Missouri, which dominated the heights north of the Great Bitter Lake, was important for keeping the yard and bridge out of Egyptian artillery range. Thus the israeli supply lines was under control of the egyptian armed forces. 3-the egyptian 3rd army didn't ever never got entrapped as there were egyptian forces controlling southern of the bitter lakes and was able to repulse the israeli for many times and thus the 3rd army entrapped the israeli not the israeli entrapped the egyptians . 4-Two egyptian divisions were assigned to repulse the israeli beside the egyptian 1st field army was behind them and didn't joined the battles yet. 5-It was estimated by Israelis that the 3rd army was 30000 man with 300 tanks and 300 artillery pieces. Sharon division lost most of its power and only less than 100 remained for him and Magen division was only 80 tanks. Adan was the one assigned for the main missions and engaged the main battles which is a fact while Sharon and Magen divisions weren't primary forces which means Adan's losses must be greater than Sharon and Magen divisions , and again less then 100 remained for sharon out of his division which is supposed to be 280 tanks , and less than 80 tanks remained for Magen out of his division which is supposed to be 380 tanks. so is it reasonable that those israeli tanks less than 200 tanks were not able to surround an army with 300 tanks beside the 1st field army west of these israeli forces beside those two divisions 16th and 4th which was entrapping the Israelis.

Jake ,   USA   (02.06.12)
The kind that flees Israel before military duty to smoke pot in NYC? Perhaps your the type of coward that is struck with such paralyzing fear that you feel the need to drag others down. Either way, I wish you a speedy recovery.

Turns out the reason Israelis don't remember this loss is Mubarak made it up. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Air_Battle_of_El_Mansoura In the entire war Israel list 5-8 fighters to Egypt's 172.
30. They tried that and got defeated....

This time they even faced Hez with offensive capabilities. They are waiting for the green light. Go figure what is in store without you going for them, they will go for you.
