1. Yair, the "Rebels" were just endorsed by al-Qaeda
Guest ,   Sf-us   (02.13.12)
It's too bad, but we don't trust them or Assad. It's Russia's problem now. Don't blame the "world"- you're their neighbor-what are you doing about it? You wouldn't even let the people fleeing Assad enter Israel. Hypocrisy starts at home.
2. Don't trust the world, trust me!
Stephan ,   US, US   (02.13.12)
3. Agree with Yair
R ,   Israel   (02.13.12)
I agree. The declarations, the observers, the condemnations - all do nothing for the civilians being deliberately exterminated in Homs. If this is how and Arab ruler treats his own Arab citizens, and if this is how the world reacts, we can expect absolutely nothing from them and must rely only on ourselves.
4. B'Emet!!! The BEST article I have read for a LONG TIME
Alan ,   SA   (02.13.12)
5. I have a question
Yael Schlichting ,   Raubling - Germany   (02.13.12)
Shalom! Dear Yair, I am reading the words, you are citing your father with and I have one essential question: Taking your fathers words seriously, what can Israel answer to the world's demands to Israel? Israel must give clear and understandable answers to this demands. Israel must define a policy, that deals with this demands. As long as countries like UK, France, Germany, ..... fail to deal with the problem sufficiently and their only answer is to demand Israel to compromise and take risks, Israel actually is in an easy position to argue. Why don't Israeli politicians take the chance and bring facts to public? Why does Hasbara appear so gentle? Why is so few done to unmask Arab lies about Israel? Oh? It was more than one question. If we want more support from Germany, France etc, we need to address the fact that these countries have significant Muslim minorities and these minorities are an interesting group to address in all upcoming election campaigns. Furthermore these minorities are doing a lot of lobby work. One element of this Muslim lobby work is to tell the public and politicians and their aides, that the Arab/Muslim lobby work is minor compared to the overwhelming Jewish lobby work. If activists for Israel shall be a little more successful in countries like Germany and the EU in general, we need a little more support from Israel. It is not enough to tell the world, that Israel is a wonderful country. Shavua tov and best regards Yael
6. They would do even LESS for the Jews
George ,   Rockford, DE   (02.13.12)
It is hard for humans to defend the defenceless in general. It is pure sacrifice for the savior. But when the Jews are defenseless, the goyim say "see, they are getting their just rewards." What Israel and the United States have revealed is the up-side to the game: when Israel is strong, the goyim actually respect the Jews to a greater extent. BLOW AWAY IRAN!
7. yoiu just woke up
mohson   (02.13.12)
lapid says that of course israel should not trust anyone else for its security. Of course this is true. So lapid, since we agree on this, why did you and your father support the coward olmert who offloaded israel's security to the US, UN and EU? why did you support him after winograd judged that he was a security incompetent sitting there with his dumb livni not stopping him, committing too few troops on limited missions that placed idf like the naval commando on the marmora-in hard spots and didn't let them fight out of it witt massive force. I am not impressed. Say what you want-you supported olmert-you are drek to me
8. Amazing
michaelpielet ,   israel   (02.13.12)
Yair writes something intelligent. Bravo!
9. Jesus H Christ Yair had an epiphany
Al   (02.13.12)
Say it isnt so..comrad Yair. YOu finally had a brain wave and you want us to know. Chances are you will sing another tune next week, when you meet uo with your eurotrash sponsors.
10. My opinion of Lapid just went up...
Henry from New York ,   USA   (02.13.12)
That's some definite truth he is saying. If I could vote in Israeli elections, I'd definitely consider him one for my party's list (and would hope that's not his only reason for saying such true things).
11. #1 I hate to make excuses, but it's a practical approach.
Henry from New York ,   USA   (02.13.12)
A lot of Syrians aren't really fans of Israel, and who knows what some of them might do when they enter Israel. Who knows whether or not a villainous agent of Assad might not sneak in? Who knows if allowing some people in might not lead to a flood of even more people trying desparately to cross the mined areas and killing themselves in the process? It's a lot of what-ifs, yes, but they're very plausible what-ifs, are they not? Also, just for your knowledge, Lapid is a man who wields great influence and just entered the political ring, and if he formed his own party, he would apparently get about 24-mandates (Kadima killer?
12. The unfair Veto
Ali Clark ,   Scotland   (02.13.12)
The reason we can't do a thing about Syria is because of the U.S unfairly using its veto to protect Israeli Intrests against world opinion.Russia and China are showing us why its not fair to use a veto against the worlds intrests!
13. Why does Yair Lapid free publicity?
zionist forever   (02.13.12)
Yair Lapid has already been forced to give up his tv job because journalism clashes with politics so why does he still get write articles on here to promote his political ambitions. Non of the other candidates are allowed to wrote collums on here so isn't this a clash of interests and free publicity to a man whose only real policy so far has been fame.
14. Be realistic and stop moralizing
Tom ,   USA   (02.13.12)
The world is divided into spheres of interest by the Powers That Be that cannot be violated. It was always the case through history. NATO had to respect the old Warsaw Pact USSR territory, regardless the massacre in Budapest, or at the B. Wall. China rules Tibet, Russia rules Georgia and now NATO controls Libya... Those who are in control feel free to do whatever they want to because "that territory belongs to them" based on tacit agreement between various parties. Try to swallow the bitter pill that Syria belongs to "others" and don't fantasy about impossible propositions.
15. #12. Ali: You are not the World!
Tom ,   USA   (02.13.12)
You are only the radical, leftist antisemitic part of the World, mind you. The world has no "interest" in exterminating the Jews only your Islamofascists-Leftist groups are dreaming about it.
16. #12 - Not every bad thing in this world is Israel's fault.
Henry from New York ,   USA   (02.13.12)
17. Don't trust the world
joe ,   uk   (02.13.12)
what if israel did it to the palistinians how would the world react
18. Well, someone sure has hit ....
Sarah B ,   U.S.A. / Israel   (02.13.12)
... the campaign trail. Does Mr. Lapid seriously think that he is enlightening us in any meaningful way? We already know everything he said. Old news.
19. Lapid is right
rivkah f. ,   jerusalem   (02.13.12)
The West is clueless about the Middle East and apathetic to the Syrian civilian deaths. A few months ago Assad was deemed a "reformer" by Hilary Clinton and last year his wife was on the cover of Vogue Magazine --"A Rose in the Desert." The West is appeasing Iran & the Muslim Brotherhood & hopes that everything will work out & that they can continue to live the good life. The U.S. thinks if they do nothing to Iran & its proxies then nothing will be done to the U.S. It is all too reminiscent of the 1930s but we are not allowed to mention that. Thanks for saying it, Mr. Lapid.
20. Great Article!
Brian Douglas Kent ,   Queens   (02.13.12)
I would not expect it from Yair Lapid.
21. Who's vote is he going for?
avramele   (02.13.12)
Lapid is consistently setting himself up as the moderate likudnik or right wing Kadimanik - the great white hope of the Ashkenazi middle. If Mofaz beats Livni in the kadima primaries he has no where to go. If Yachimovich focuses on domestic policies and an Alon-Rabin type labor foreign policy he is the odd man out. You would think the Israeli electorate would be wise not to vote for the next secular messiah who will, the day after elections, deliver the center to Bibi and the right in exchange for a driver and a title.
22. It's up to Israel to destroy Iran's nukes.
Chaim ,   Israel   (02.13.12)
Lapid is correct. Nothing could be more foolish than to depend on "the world" to save us. Nobody will do anything significant to save us. Secondly, it is degrading to put ourself at the mercy of others. It is human nature to like the strong and hate the weak. It's up to Israel to destroy Iran's nukes.
23. What exactly do people want the world to do?
Taylort ,   Earth   (02.13.12)
And will any who advocate military intervention be in the vanguard? I'm going out on a limb here and thinking not. This is not a situation that can be solved by nuking someone (the favored solution of many a talkbacker.) I await the enlightened responses of the posters who agreed with the author and look forward to their detailed plans for what the world should "do."
24. #5 Israel has no policy
Sam ,   Texas   (02.13.12)
whatsoever. Israel has no desire to give an answer to whoever. Foreign dwellers do not and will not understand that Israel is a mere Jewish tribe where everyone is a King. You would rather ask what Israel's Constitution says. The answer is "nothing" because there is no and will not ever be such thing as Constitution. Israel based on the law of "circular firing squad " -- the force of Nature, and SHAS religious party.
25. ''THE WORLD'', EVERY NATIONAL NATION-STATE, WITH A PEOPLE AN
A WONDER-S.R. ,   MULTIVERSE   (02.13.12)
AND SO ON...''THE WORLD'' DID NOT EXIST/ DOES NOT EXIST. FOR EXAMPLE THE FINANCIAL WORLD, THE PARMACEUTICAL WORLD EXISTED/EXISTS. EVERY COUNTRY, WITH A PEOPLE ALSO EXISTS. THE PLANET OF EARTH, WITH IT''S POPULATION/PEOPLE/MANKIND EXISTED/EXISTS TOO, A.S.O....
26. # 23
Birdi ,   Israel   (02.13.12)
We are all eagerly waiting for you ''Jeff, ex-marine" to go save Syria. Put your boots on & off you go!
27. #24.Sam: Israel and the Jews are catalyst
Tom ,   USA   (02.13.12)
Their mere existence causes the evil like you to jump to the fore and unmask itself for all to see its rotten core.
28. 15 ,Tom. Thats not true!
Ali Clark ,   Scotland   (02.13.12)
How do you come up with all that from a tiny piece of honest opinion.I like Some Jews but not all and that goes for Muslims and Christians too .I'd never see anyone come to harm regardless of religion and that includes you.You should try and be objective and you'd at least appear to be credible . God bless you!
29.  Henry from New York .16
Ali Clark ,   Scotland   (02.13.12)
Of course you are correct. Its the worlds fault, without any sarcasm I blame us the world for this situation. We should have done something years ago to stop the vetoes from being used dishonestly or against the law of human morality. Sorry if I appeared biased Henry.
30. #28. Ali: The Battle cry of the Left
Tom ,   USA   (02.14.12)
Since the 60-es the "Battle cry" of the left was "We are the World", 'We represent the World," "We are the voice of the World," " We ARE the World..." I remind you that you are NOT the world, you are an Islamist living in Scotland, the home of the scumbag Galloway.
