If you believe in the Almighty, it seems a bit silly for him to need a son. Besides -- haven't you noticed the parallels between the New Testament and Greek and Roman mythology? Where deities came down from Olympus all the time to engage in sexual relations with mortal women, who subsequently gave birth to children who were partly divine, partly human? I guess if you really want to sell the product, you have to adapt it in some way to what the masses expect. That's marketing; not religion.

The Almighty didn't need the slew of characters in the Old Testament any more than He/She/It needed a son. As for Greek and Roman mythologies, read the Epic of Gilgamesh and note the similarities to stories in the Old Testament. At demos where I have seen them they chant "From the river to the sea Palestine will be free" They seem quite open in their goal of eliminating the entire Jewish State.
