1. Do they protest also against draft dodgers
William ,   Israel   (02.23.12)
like the many in Tel Aviv who claim a false sickness or conscientious objector? If they want the Haradi to serve in the army, perhaps the leftist brats should lead by example.
2. "You do not know the value of studying Torah"
William ,   Israel   (02.23.12)
I bet most of the youth today, especially in Tel Aviv, do not know the value of studying the Torah. However, neither do the Haradim know the value of a well-rounded life, and having a career in addition to studying Torah, as the Rambam pointed out. Studying Torah is wonderful and should be practiced more often by Jews, but it is NOT a career.
3. "They don't serve, don't work, and get paid"
William ,   Israel   (02.23.12)
Isn't this what many social protesters are demanding for themselves as well? Social protesters are demanding higher wages, lower prices, all types of govt subsidies, low-cost housing in high-cost, high-demand centers, lower or free education, and massive taxation of anyone they deem "well-off" (aka "oligarchs"). A bit hypocritical to attack the situation of the haradim, don't you think?
4. Pikuach Nefesh
Zivron   (02.23.12)
Day care centres are bastions of antibiotic resistance so now men have to work and women stay at home tlook after children .It's a pikuach nefesh issue now.The houses ought be guarded by haredi men who can discuss Torah and Talmud on guard duty.
5. Mixed Messages....
Mitchell Cohen ,   Gush Etzion, Israel   (02.23.12)
Don't get me wrong. I believe all citizens should equally share the burden. However, too many of those demonstrating against Haredi draft dodging are the same individuals who complain about the religious (i.e. dati leumi) "taking over the IDF". So, which is it? Do you REALLY want hundreds of thousands of ultra-Orthodox soldiers in the IDF or are there already too many religious soldiers in the IDF without them? Or do you want the Haredim to enlist, but be kept in their place (along with the national religious)?
6. All we want to do is be fruitful and multiply...
Haredi ,   Promised land   (02.23.12)
As long as we keep multiplying like rabbits and keep Israel at an advantage should we be forced to live in one state along with the Palestinians... Our efforts to multiply should be rewarded by increasing our subsidies from this incompetent Israeli state...
7. Righteous Hypocrites
Daromi ,   Tel Aviv, Israel   (02.23.12)
Yo Mr. William, What is with your obsession with us folks in Tel Aviv? You say you study Torah, but doesn't Torah tell you not to spread Lashon Hara? What do you know about Tel Aviv, you are too busy being a righteous hypocrite. Do me a favor and move your soapbox, I've heard parrots say more interesting things. Besides, these HS kids don't necessarily have to be "leftist brats" it appears they are secular Zionists who believe that everyone should serve, no exceptions. Seems you are full of opinions today but no facts to back them up.
8. DO NOT END THE TAL LAW UNTIL THERE IS SOMETHING BETTER
zionist forever   (02.23.12)
It doesn't matter what the courts say you can't get of one law until you have something to replace it with. Just saying Tal Law is over yeshiva students must enlist won't all be out collecting their uniform they will become Tel Avis style draft dodgers only their cause will be religion rather than they don't believe in war. If you force them all to sign up against their will then the IDF will find itself flooded with yeshiva students demanding changes in the way the IDF operates and soon the generals will be out in the streets protesting for the Tal Law to be reintroduced. So these people will not enlist out of choice and you don't want them flooding the army and demanding change so we need to create a form of civilian national service which the haredi & the arabs can feel comfortable being involved it and until you get that then there should be no rush to get rid of the Tal Law just because you don't like the haredi which is the real reason why the draft dodging Tel Aviv secular elite are demanding change not because they actually care about the Tal Law itself.
9. bravo israeli youth
mike ,   usa   (02.23.12)
let the cowards pull their share, israel does not need leeches.
10. Amazing protest & #7 i agree with you 100%
Michael ,   West Jerusalem/NY   (02.24.12)
Why does everyone hate on Tel-Avians? Although I do think they should also mention more young women escaping the army for phony religious reasons
11. #6 - great, so we have a larger haradi population...
William ,   Israel   (02.24.12)
but when the next war comes, will you run to basements and study Torah? As in the early days of the State, we don't need just bodies, we need bodies that can commit it's fair share of work and obligations. Studying Torah was never a career in history except recently. Time to be a productive member of society, which doesn't mean more babies.
12. #7 - Yo, Daromi - you in Tel Aviv make yourselves targets...
William ,   Israel   (02.24.12)
for your self-righteous indignation and absolute anti-haradi speak. Now, I never said I studied Torah (read my post again) and I'm not religious. Though I can see the value in it, to a limited extent. I lived and played in Tel Aviv for years, but I never became a myopic Leftist dink who put play first, and all of my fellow citizens second. Question - did you serve in the army, and as what? Put up or shut up, D.
13. paradise over - great comment!
Jackson ,   Melbourne   (02.24.12)
all who live in israel must serve, i thought it was as simple as that!!! They (haredim) don't serve, don't work, and get paid – it's paradise. But this paradise is coming to an end." spot on!
14. Leftist Admits
Yair Lapid   (02.24.12)
...In fact, the national-religious community’s sons, proportionately represent the largest sector in the IDF, and the strictly secular community, as noted in statistics from secular high schools in metropolitan Tel Aviv and in secular kibbutzim, have a high rate of draft-dodging.
15. Who says I'm a leftist?
Daromi ,   Tel Aviv, Israel   (02.24.12)
I served, and proud of it, and you wouldn't want to meet me in a dark alley, You sound like a couch potato and probably a bit round around the middle..I know your type, lots of tough talk, nothing behind it. So, did you serve? You sound like you'd make a good census taker. They are annoying as heck.
16. Serving the country
Eliahu Feldman ,   Raanana, Israel   (02.24.12)
Problem is not with Haredim, but with ALL the sectors of the population who do not serve the country. Whoever dos not serve - either as a soldier, or Sherut Leumi, or Social service, or Health service should lose his right to decide the fate of the country - that is, lose his right to vote in ballots. Equal rights for equal obligations
17. let's publicize the full story
su ,   jerusalem   (02.24.12)
I am a professional-a woman and 100% ascribe to Haredi values. 2 of my sons enlisted in the combat units in the army despite my hopes they would stay in yeshiva. they told me on several occasions that there is a big lack of recruitment from residents of Tel Aviv and that most soldiers come from the smaller towns and kibbutzim - the tel aviv populace gets exemptions from the army BIG TIME. good Shabbas.
18. Either everyone goes to the army or no
jason white ,   afula, israel   (02.24.12)
one. Religious or not Jew, non Jew, married, single, with children or pregnant. No exceptions. Either do your time in the army or do three times the amount in a forced labor camp. Those over the age to be drafted, let them be taxed 50% of their salaries, welfare benefits or pensions.Tax each child in their families and no more child allowances. Make them return all the child allowances they received with interest. And no more tax money to non Zionist institutions. No more voting, sitting in the knesset or working in the government.
19. 6 In the Tora Ysashar respected...
ORA ,   JERUSALEM   (02.24.12)
Zevulun.I can t believe you are a genuine Haredi,one who fears G-D.
20. Finally, an honest Haredi
JDE ,   Boston, USA   (02.24.12)
Comment # 6: "All we want to do is be fruitful and multiply... As long as we keep multiplying like rabbits and keep Israel at an advantage should we be forced to live in one state along with the Palestinians... Our efforts to multiply should be rewarded by increasing our subsidies from this incompetent Israeli state... " Generations of inbreeding and indoctrination have produced a mindset so impenetrable, and a sense of entitlement so vast that it is utterly futile to even attempt to reason with them. Unless and until they change, under no circumstances should they be allowed to be involved in the political process or to affect the course of civilization in any way.
21. Without us Haredis, you would all end in hell...
(02.24.12)

"Without us Haredis, you would all end in hell... " We'd still be better off.
