Reality is that an Israeli airstrike would at best delay Iran's nuclear program by 18months (based on Israel's own Military's assessment) Iran's most sophisticated enrichment facility is under 250 ft of granite mountain. An airstrike would do nothing to it. They have enough raw material for 4 bombs which only need additional enrichment to be useable. This is not Syria or Iraq. This is a country that believes they are developing the ultimate defense against a US invasion. The only way peacefully to stop their nuclear program is for Israel to transfer its nuclear bombs and enrichment facilities to a neutral party if Iran simultaneously does the same and agrees to unfettered inspections. Sanctions would also need to be lifted. Unfettered inspections work and if Iran prevented them in the future you can always return to the status quo. Denuclearizing the whole Middle East is the only way Iran can save face if they discontinue their nuclear program after all they have spent on it. The only other way to guarantee they stop their nuclear program is a US invasion. It's not going to happen. That is reality.

Friedman says that only the US can take out the Iranian nuclear capability, but it is premature to do that ""now. "Now" is before the next election. After the election, if he wins, Obama will be back to his "new approach to the Muslim World", and Friedman can return to writing commentaries on why support for Israel is counter to US interests. Yes. Because of an Iranian defector and electronic and ground surveilence,we know where all their facilities are located. If the offer is made they can say "We rid the Middle east of Israeli nukes". There is no question the sanctions are hurting them but once the Euro-zone bans importation of Iranian oil and all the banking restrictions are in place( all by next month )they will start to run out of hard currency. Obama never had to veto the PA bid because they withdrew their application prior to the vote. He probably would have vetoed it not because he is Israel's friend but because of his own party's pressure. The PA did not want to embarrass their friend in the White house so they withdrew their application.
