1. When are you going to do that for converts???
Convert ,   Israel   (03.20.12)
2. Giving a secular divorce is nothing.
Benjamin ,   Ramat HaSharon   (03.20.12)
It can be gotten within a day but the wife would not be able to remarry as long as she doesn't gets a religious divorce.
3. What about men chained to women who won't accept a 'get'?
Scott ,   USA   (03.20.12)
They are also chained and can't remarry, but nobody talks about them, ever.
4. # 2
Birdi ,   Israel   (03.20.12)
Re-read the 3rd paragraph where the word ''get'' is written. ''Get'' is a Jewish divorce!!
5. EXCELLENT! WAY OVERDUE!
Israeli 2   (03.21.12)
This is probably the ONLY issue I agree for the kneset to infringe upon Jewish laws. Baruch Hashem and Mazal Tov to all women of Israel.
6. # 3
Birdi ,   Israel   (03.21.12)
The word ''spouse" is used in the 1st paragraph, it means man or woman. This new law is for married men & married women who want a divorce.
7. # 2
Birdi ,   Israel   (03.21.12)
No Jew, whether male or female is able to re-marry without a Get, which is a Jewish divorce.
8. Mamzerim !!!
Ilana ,   Jerusalem, Israel   (03.21.12)
There is a difference between men who get refused a get and women. Any subsequent children from a "chained" male would not render the children Mamzerim - unlike from a women!!!!
9. Agree with Scott
MR ,   Beit Shemesh, Israel   (03.21.12)
This is also a serious issue - agreed. In some cases, it is possible for the woman to refuse for up to 3 years. Especially dangerous if the husband is a Kohen. Also, it is not unheard of for both sexes to use refusal to accept or grant a get as financial leverage. I can only hope that the sancions are applied bilaerally.
10. Good idea
Danny ,   Beersheva, Israel   (03.21.12)
Let's encourage divorce instead of marriage. What a wonderful idea. I like it already. In fact I am going to ask my wife for a divorce just to test the new law and then go to a Bet Din in Ashdod where we were married.
11. This is a joke
Dorothy Friend ,   Tel Aviv   (03.21.12)
The only way out is to have separate marriage tracks, religious and not religious. Yes, if the child of a second secular marriage is considered a b@stard by the rabbis, the kid and his/her decendents could continue marrying secular. They are Jewish for what counts -- going into the army and paying taxes, aren't they? And if the rabbis really wanted to completely do away with the aguna status, I am sure they could. They did away with bigamy hundreds of years ago, didn't they? The modern rabbis don't have the same class as the Medieval ones, and they don't care about women, don't want to help them.
12. #3 + #6 -
Dorothy Friend ,   Tel Aviv   (03.21.12)
Israel allows bigamy in these cases. There are a couple every year. They are in no way chained. It's the Halachic double standard at its finest!
13. #11 - I'm confused
babawawa ,   new york, usa   (03.21.12)
This law should make getting a Jewish divorce in a timely fashion possible. What's with the two tracks - are you planning on changing the Jewish religion? I just wish this could be applied in the rest of the world.
14. Stupid fast-food law! 6 month separation FIRST
Ezra ,   USA   (03.21.12)
Many people have a change of heart during a separation; which ensures they'll re-consider the move, which is often a knee jerk reaction or based on very immature reasons. The 45 day should ONLY apply in abuse cases or extramarital affairs. American divorce laws are far more intelligent and sophisticated. I'm shocked such an idiotic law would be passed in Israel. But then again...maybe not.
15. #13 - it won't help women
Dorothy Friend ,   Tel Aviv   (03.21.12)
There are plenty of men who have been in jail for years rather then give their wives a divorce. All I care about is helping women. I think Judaism, as it stands now, is not very helpful. As I said, if in the High Middle Ages bigamy could be outlawed by the Rabbis, they could find away to free Agunot. Really free them, without their husbands agreement. If they really cared about them.
16. There is no equality
Brian ,   Raanana   (03.21.12)
Until it is stopped that mothers get automatic custody of children (like every Western country) there will not be equality
17. Whole subject is very compelling reason to stay atheist.
leo ,   usa   (03.22.12)
18. 17 Leo, USA: Your Creator HaShem will ask you how you could
Rivkah   (03.22.12)
look at a tree and not believe there is a Creator. Your soul will see the heavenly Jerusalem and all its beauty and glory and be turned away to everlasting torment since the worm (soul) never dies. Read the book "Come Out of Her My People" by C.J. Koster to see what religion should be and what is required of you. Many are called but few are chosen. Fewer still are faithful to the end of the race of faith. You must believe that Yehoshua is the Son of the Ruach HaKodesh who was born of a virgin named Miriam. He died for the sins of the world to reconcile fallen mankind to HaShem. He died and rose from the dead. Yehoshua said those who love Him would obey His Commandments, so read the Holy Scriptures to see which Commandments are everalsting Commandments that you are still subject to today. Work out your own salvation, Scriptures tells us. Follow the Word of HaShem instead of the commandments of men.
