1. False! Canada is the safest place for Jews
Rich ,   Toronto, Canada   (03.21.12)
in the world. Also, Jews live longer hear than in Israel.
2. #1, maybe so, but Canada is a frozen tundra
Jake ,   USA   (03.21.12)
Jews are safe in Antarctica as well
3. Probable true
Istvan ,   BUDAPEST HUNGARY   (03.21.12)
but also Hungary is safe for jews. For instance I was insulted by antisemites on the street only one time in every ten years.
4. to #3
Michael ,   New York   (03.21.12)
And yet, Hungary has a massive problem with antisemitism.
5. Do they teach spelling in Canada, hey?
David ,   Israel   (03.21.12)
6. the point is...
Robert ,   USA   (03.21.12)
in Israel Jews can defend themselves corporately, elsewhere they can be individual targets. Canada and the US might be safe places for Jews now, but Spain was once a safe place, as was Germany. I read an opinion on YNet once that said "the world has not yet adjusted to the thought of a Jew with a gun." You are safe in your land for many reasons.
7. Don't dream
Arik A ,   Hadera Israel   (03.21.12)

9. One question, Mr Ronen
Buskila ,   South America   (03.21.12)
How is it that if some practicing Jews decide to immigrate to Israel is an enthusiastic Zionist actio?! You losing me. I thought that if I were to decide to live in Israel is because I am a Jew! and as such I would feel comfortable amoung people who practice my faith...Now, you introducing an ideology Zionism. We have rights on the Land of Israel, because we are Jews, not part of a XIX th century ideology. It is about time to grow and feel sure about who we are, and why we do what we do. Are you calling a Syrian Christian who goes to Rome as an idelogical move or as an action that help her/him to fulfill in peace his/her believes?!

alsky ,   toronto   (03.21.12)

11. Canada
Julie ,   Israel   (03.21.12)
I am from Canada and though never physically harmed I can assure you that anti-antisemitism is alive and well and has continued over the past 65 years of my life in B.C. Alberta, Saskatchewan, and the Maritimes. In school, at work, at university, at the Rotary club, in hospital, at Girl Guides .......it is always there lurking in some corner. But one learns to play the game and just tries to be friends with everyone. Canadian universities are hotbeds of anti-Israel sentiment from professors to fellow students. The huge presence of Arab students on campus has helped that along immensely. Many churches and ministers are not your friend, supporting "Palestinians" exclusively and blindly. Thank goodness that Canada has some fair-minded people who stand up for what is right. but don't delude yourself..........wake up.
12. A REALITY CHECK ,WITH RESPECT
MR CYNIC ,   SAFED OPERA HOUSE   (03.21.12)
With all due respect to Moshe Ronen ,who has a fair point ,the main reason jews / israelis reside in Israel is because we regard this land as being ours ,an ancient and everlasting connection .But there are times when Israel is extremely safe for its inhabitants and ,sadly ,times when it is not so safe .For example ,the recent rockets fired on southern Israel do not bode well for the security of souther israeli residents regardles of Iron Dome. IMHO of course.
13. To #5, 10
Cowboy Joe ,   Calgary, Canada   (03.21.12)
Many years ago I, a Canuck, had a temporary expatriate assignment in N.J. I shared an office with a young engineer who came from around Chicago. He used to make jokes about how I and some other Canadians in the company ended our sentences with 'eh'. After about a month he caught himself ending his sentences with 'eh as well'. He got so angry at himself and all the while I laughed. He was quite a nice fellow as were all the Americans I worked with there. I found them a lot more friendly that typical Canadians from Central Canada where I worked before the stint.

" I read an opinion on YNet once that said 'the world has not yet adjusted to the thought of a Jew with a gun.'" if anyone thinks thats true you should see my neigbor, hes a jew and he has enough guns to arm a medium-sized army.
21. #20 I was speaking of the Jewish nation
Robert ,   USA   (03.22.12)
Sure, "a Jew with a gun" sounds like an individual Jew anywhere, but the YNet article was applying it to Israel as a nation, and so was I... sorry, I should have made that clear.
22. Canada
The True North... ,   Canada   (03.22.12)
I'll never forget the time when I was in high school, and a kid that I considered to be a friend told me and another Jewish kid that "it's a shame that Hitler didn't kill all of your kind when he had a chance".... Before you jump to any conclusions, the high school was in Israel, and the kid who made this statement hated Ashkenazi Jews... My kids go to school here in Canada, and to this day they have never encoutered an ugly antisemetic statement such as the one that I got to hear years ago in an Israeli high school. Go figure....
23. The author forgets something.
Vlad   (03.22.12)
Istavan at #3 mentions that he has seen little antisemitism, but what Istavan forgets is that 60% of Hungarian Jews are intermarrying. Its a trend all across the diaspora. Jews are doing voluntarily what they could never be compelled to do by force - intermarrying. 47% of American Jewish youth intermarry. Its happening everywhere. Within a few generations, worldwide Jewry will be reduced mostly to insular ultra-Orthodox communities. Israel may have saved the Jewish people. If it did not exist in this era, worldwide Jewry would be completely dying out by now, and may have been on the way to death within a few generations. As it stands now, Israel is the only place where the Jewish population is growing. Soon, it will be totally up to the State of Israel to carry the torch of preserving the Jewish people.

26. fhe lubavitcher rebbe said israel was thesafest place
avrom ,   bet shemesh   (03.22.12)
fhe chofetz chaim quoting obadia " zion will be refuge"
27. #1
Miro ,   Israel   (03.22.12)
Canada is a safe place, but a boring and frozen one. Maybe you are one of those receiving Govt.paid rent and handouts.Otherwise you would think diferently. With the highest taxation in the world and a real estate buble to burst soon,Canada is not a place to live today.
28. Jews Should be safe anywhere - nothing less will do
GR ,   London   (03.22.12)
Don't run away - a strong diaspora AND a strong Israel is the future. Much love from a Jew in London.
29. To #1
Jay ,   Toronto (On Business   (03.22.12)
NO, Rich. Israelis live longer than Canadians. I come to Toronto several times a year for business and am very aware of the lives of my contacts here. I can say, without question, that the quality of life life in Israel is much much higher. As the many Olim from N. America who are streaming into Israel monthly will attest, there is no better place to raise a family than in Israel.
30. # 22
Larry ,   THORNHILL, TORONTO   (03.22.12)
I grew up in Toronto, for 15 years in a non-Jewish area, and since in a Jewish area. In the first 15 years of my life I have been beaten, tied to a chair and taunted about Hitler, had my Maged David ripped off my neck and then punches in the face, told I was going to hell, and spat on by a teacher. This is all true. Toronto Jews who lock themselves away in their littler bubble communities of Thornhill are so disillusioned by the relative quite in their neighborhood. However, even in Thornhill, the crime rate is higher than any Israeli city. Parents hover over their kids and parks and in public, kids are told not to talk to strangers, living a "Jewish life" costs a premium of higher real estate prices and the heavy cost of Jewish schooling. Even with the "comfort" suicide rates in Canada are very hug, while Israel's rate is at the bottom of the list in the world.
