Honoring soldiers in modern day Germany is appropriate. Any recognition of veterans of the two world wars should be strictly a private family matter.
2. I dont see the problem with this
Jonathan ,   MN/US   (04.05.12)
And to anyone who does ask yourselves this. Was the rank and file of the 3rd reich truly evil or simply misguded Also #1 I suggest you do some research on the great war before condeming germany for their part in it.

split ,   US   (04.05.12)
In 1985 Ronald Reagan on his trip to Germany to commemorate the 40th anniversary of the end of World War II honored German soldiers in a wreath-laying ceremony in a military cemetery in Bitburg where Nazi Waffen-SS soldiers were buried, despite exclusively Jewish yelping ,... Something changed since then ? ,...
4. Wehrmacht vs. SS
John ,   San Diego   (04.05.12)
There is a difference between Wehrmacht and SS soldiers. The Wehrmacht, like those under Rommel, refused to give Jews over. The Wehrmacht were just soldiers, while the SS did the genocide.

10. remembering German war dead
Bill ,   NZ   (04.06.12)
I have several family members who were killed fighting the Germans in both world wars. I believe the German people have the same right to pay respects to the men who fought for their country as we do. All sides in the war committed terrible atrocities, not just the Germans.
11. #8 I am sure...
Edwin   (04.06.12)
...most Nazi veterans hated committing their dastardly deeds: after they lost the war.

Carl, who are you to say who and how they should be honoured? Some might ask the same question about your army

Gee ,   Zikron Yaakov   (04.06.12)
Ever here of a place called Malmady? Try looking it up. The Waffen SS were political troops and were very involved in the German genocide machine. The Wehrmacht was also very involved in it as well. No - there were no 'good German soldier'.

against humanity but that does not mean Americans cannot remember US soldiers killed. And Germany was not responsible for WW 1.
15. Nazi veterans get more German benefits Holocaust victims
Dr. L. Brnd ,   San Diego, USA   (04.06.12)
Germany should "spend more for the social welfare" of its veterans? Germany, which is often seen grumbling that the "new" Germany should not have to continue paying for the crimes of the old WW Two regime, has never had any problem spending much more on veterans benefits for Nazi era wehrmacht and SS soldiers [including war criminals released from jail] than they spend on benefits for Holocaust victims. Apparently, these health and pension benefits are considered a debt that was earned and that must be paid to those who served under Hitler. Unlike the wages of slave laborers and their benefits, or the health and compensation paid to Holocaust victims - or even returning all their property to them. Because this "former debt" is somehow different for "new" Germany to be responsible for that the "old regime" Nazi veteran "former debt" - never a pension check missed since 1953, when the "new" Germany was born, or 1956, when the "new " Germany army was born.

19. Ha Shem Dayan Emet!
Baruch ,   USA/Israel   (04.09.12)
They were soldiers, all of them. It is not for us to determine the value of a life by politics or the side they chose--or were conscripted to champion. Let the families mourn, their memories can not be controlled, nor should they be condemed. So it has been said, do not forgive, do not forget, but do not go back!
