mehrdad ,   germany   (04.05.12)
its realy cheap in germany to "critisize" isrsel. the guys 8like graSS) get a massive PR and no personal consequences. now would graSS critisize islam the reactions would be between death fatwah and a knife in the back. the jewish autor hendryk m broder describes suich a behavour as "courage for free".
2. Jose Saramago is a German?
(04.05.12)
Mr Meotti writes about "Something rotten in Germany" by quoting Jose Saramago. The rest is on the same level: inaccurate and incoherent. Ynet you can do better than that.
3. Gabriel leader of SPD an Antisemite like most Germans /Aust
Laila ,   Montreal, Canada   (04.05.12)
Gabriel, the leader of the SPD is also an antisemite like most Germans and Austrians. Austria is doing great damage to Israel at the United Nations.
4. Of course German concern over public
John Robey ,   Austin, Texas   (04.05.12)
policies in Israel is the product of not coming to terms with their guilty past, but what about those of us from other countries who are not guilty of the crimes of the forties but are nevertheless concerned about Israeli policies toward Palestenians, women, Arabs, and even other Jews (i.e.,Ethopians) etc.?
5. It is the Palestinians and the possible division ofJerusalem
Rivkah   (04.05.12)
that is the greatest threat to world peace since the Prophet Joel said it is the dividing of Jerusalem that leads to Armageddon.
6. Meotti's pen sheds light, again
Marcus Stein   (04.05.12)
Grass is a typical european post-auschwitz writer
7. Someone tell Miletti Nazism never died
Norbus ,   Jerusalem   (04.05.12)
Miletti writes as if he made a discovery If he googled Rodney Atkinson, FUEV, he'd find continuity from WW11 of Nazis financed by German Foreign ministry , and their organisation which supports ethnic minority groups except Jews who they claim should be eliminated and are not entitled to their own state. FUEV was sprouting roots with Germany's help into every UN council or committee, and have control of the UNHR which orchestrates the venomous anto semitism now spreading virally .. Perhaps Mielli can then write up a report on Atkinson's research , durin his fight for UK independance from EU
8. Germany stays infected with Antisemitism,
Chris Rettenmoser ,   Bayerisch Gmain Germ   (04.05.12)
GraSS is only an articulate symptom of that diagnosis...
9. Three Germanys
Ghilmeini ,   Amerik   (04.05.12)
One Germany laments the Holocaust and is an honest friend of Israel. One Germany is ignorant or indifferent to the Jews and the Holocaust One Germany is proud of the holocaust and seeks to finish Hitler's work. The three Germanies should get three different responses. To our friends, we reciprocate their friendship; we are mindful that many Jews who survived the Holocaust were saved by the righteous. To the indifferent and ignorant, we seek to educate and remind them of the facts and encourage them to join the ranks of the righteous. And to the unrepentant. We live and we are strong, living well is the best revenge and we have a mighty army to crush any chance of ever being at their mercy. Gunter Grass can kiss my arse. He can go write love poems to his beloved Hitler knowing we can drop a nuclear bomb on him any day we want and the only reason we don't is for the sake of the righteous.
10. German govt has been good to Israel
David ,   USA   (04.06.12)
Compared to most of Europe where JEW hating is universal. The govt of Germany has been more pro-Israel than many other nations of Europe. Germany has supplied Israel with world class subs and other military hardware among other things. German people may not like Jews in general but the government seems ok.
11. If I read jews news I get depressed, the whole world is evil
Cole ,   EU   (04.06.12)
12. people!!
A German   (04.05.12)
this article does not really reflect what is going on in Germany right now: the majority of german newspapers and politicians, even church leaders, critizise Grass harshly for his so called "poem". lots of intellectual people stand up against the crap he wrote, it's all over the newspapers, even in rather left wing magazines like the famous "Spiegel"! As a German, I can say, the German nation stands behind the only democracy in the Middle East: the Jewish State. We are aware of the threat eminating from Iran. And we do have some people among us who are antisemites unfortunately, they keep speaking out loud and are mistakenly assumed to speak for our nation.
13. NO such thing as 'former Nazi'. Waffen SS always.
Timchok   (04.06.12)
14. From the genocidal SS. Regrets his comrades did not finnish
PETER SM ,   AUSTRALIA   (04.06.12)
the job. The German SS were hand picked volunterers
15. #12.A German: We're appretiate you're stand
Tom ,   USA   (04.06.12)
Intelligent Jewish people know that there are still many living evil people among us, products of a misbegotten, ill conceived past century. There are two living Germans who embody the very worst of Germany: the Nazi Günther Grass and the Bolshevik Margot Honecker. Both cling tenaciously to their cruel past, unrepentant, not showing a modicum of remorse for the sins committed over the course of their life. Be assured we are conscious of the help German gov.ment provides for Israel. Unfortunately this rotten individual tore up too many wounds that can never heal.
16. He's still a nazi.
Reuven   (04.06.12)
17. We Expect Germany To Condemn This?
K ,   Chicago, USA   (04.06.12)
Why? Grass is only expressing the majority opinion of both Germany and Europe. To the majority of Germans, it would be best if the Jews left and fast. To Europeans it would be best to get rid of all Jews (Must not upset our Muslims, they might riot.). Get them out fast. Hitler has won. By 2020 it looks as if Europe will finally be Free of all Jews.
18. Grass's anti-Semitism
Elliott Alhadeff ,   Sammamish, USA   (04.06.12)
What remains important is to openly charge these individuals and their constituencies of being motivated by anti-Semitism. No more political correctness diluting the guilt of their moral crimes. Make them answer specifically for their advocacy of anti-Semitic barbarity.
19. German Anti-Semitism; What a surprise!
Chaim ,   Israel   (04.06.12)
German Anti-Semitism: What a surprise! Now that German Anti-Semites have been reinforced with the arrival of millions of Moslem Anti-Semites in Germany, it's obvious what we can expect.
20. #12
(04.06.12)
thanks for your support and for the clarification about the reactions to this imbecile, grass. thanks again, sir israeli
21. @12:
mehrdad ,   germany   (04.06.12)
i can confirm that. the ONLY persons who defend graSS atm in germany are the notorious israel haters from extreme left, extreme right and islamic corner. the vast majority of german people knows what islamic threat means. we have it in germany on a daily base in berlin&co.
22. its an author
thomas ,   germany   (04.06.12)
its one old poet misunderstanding the iran crises writting that germany is rotten because of that is totally fucked up especially if u read the german newspapers 95% of them write that hes talking shit and should shut up
23. # 2 Response and explanation
Sagi   (04.06.12)
"Something is rotten in Germany" is a paraphrase on a a line from Hamlet by W. Shakespeare. "Something is rotten in Denmark". This is a phrase which has become idiomatic in the English language and can be used for any purpose whatsoever to explain that things are not as they should be. The writer in no way meant that Saramago is a German.
24. Melotti
Malcolm Blankenshi ,   US   (04.06.12)
Since when was it a crime not to like someone?
25. There's a lot rotten in Germany - Europe in general...
who cares   (04.06.12)
When a Nazi ( Waldheim ) can become austrian president&UN secretary general, when a Waffen SS member ( Grass ) can get a nobel prize, then there is more than something rotten in Germany or Europe in general. Scratch the surface in Europe a little bit and you will find the mental disease called antisemitism - it has never disappeared....
26. Sadly, with all the best intentions of many, the deep roots
Jehudah Ben-Israel ,   Qatzrin, Israel   (04.06.12)
of centuries-old hostility to Jews, Judaism, Israel and Zionism - all part of the same whole - are so deep that eradicating them may never be a reality. Grass's "poetic" expression is only the latest illustration of this hostility, but the publication of the infamous "progressive" daily newspaper in German is a daily reminded that this hostility is live and well and kicking in German as in the rest of Europe.
27. Yet another gross exaggeration by Meotti
cynthia ,   Canada   (04.06.12)
And then eaten up by the same useful idiots (Chaim, etc.) Because if you lose the idea that everyone hates you, what do you have left? Apparently not much...
28. thanks meotti foir exposing Europe's sickness
Martin ,   London   (04.06.12)
29. Why?
Patlippe ,   US   (04.06.12)
Why when somebody criticizes Israel in any way becomes directly an anti-semitic? just wondering !!!
30. To: No. 27
Sarah B ,   U.S.A. / Israel   (04.06.12)
There is precious little in the history of the world that would give Jews reason to think otherwise. Haven't you proven it often enough? Think we do not know about those neo-Nazi colonies out in Western Canada? Oh, we do. We do. Think we don't know about Ernst Zundel? Oh, we do. We do. Perhaps you need to revisit your assumptions, dear. You might want to start by asking yourself why you allow such vile creatures to live among you. Or is that too much to ask of your rather smug self?
