1. Musings
Sarah B ,   U.S.A. / Israel   (04.29.12)
While I believe that compulsory military service should apply to the Haredi, assuming they meet the physical and mental requirements, I do not want to see compulsory national service for Arabs. That would be a threat to Israel's national security. To those Arabs that want to volunteer for national service -- marhaba. Those who have no interest in serving the State of Israel should not be required to serve. It would become just another arrow in their quiver, and it is good to be able to distinguish between those who step up and volunteer and those who do not.
2. I not only agree with Sarah B......
Israeli 2   (04.29.12)
about Arabs not serving in the IDF, I must add that I have seen through Bibi and his politics all along. He will soon recruit Mofaz and Shelly and any opposition leader to do his bidding while he parades being a hard core likudnik.
3. It must be said: the team of ministers, for the most part,
Jehudah Ben-Israel ,   Qatzrin, Israel   (04.29.12)
that Mr. Netanjahu placed to govern the country more than three years ago, and the principles at whose light they acted were were very good. It would have been even better if the government were made of and/or supported by all the Zionist parties such as Likud, Qadimah, Israel Beitenu, 'Atzmaut, Labor, as well as Habait Hajehudi, Haihud Haleumi and Meretz so as to ensure the ushering of a properly tailored Basic Laws (which together make the equivalent of a constitution), as well as to ensure that all citizens are enlisted to serve the country, be it during a three full years of military service or three full years of civil-national service; and those who refuse to serve should be refused by the state the benefits allotted to citizens. Let us hope we learn from our previous mistakes and in the future we tailor the basic laws so as to ensure stability in governing as well as fairness, along with strong attention to national and security interests as well as a strong economic approach.
4. Let's not fool ourselves
Eli ,   Israel   (04.29.12)
The IDF have enough soldiers. If they need more, they can easily get it from secular "elitists" draft-dodgers and there are about 70% of them. But they wouldn't because they specifically need haredim for the same reason they needed the Yemenite and Sephardic children about 60 years ago. Haredim today are a threat to them. Seculars are dead worried and already panicking that very soon haredim will be a majority in Israel. If they're recruited into the secular army and are forced to desecrate Shabbat, listen to women singing, eat treif and what not, they'll accomplish their goal.
5. About obrigatory army service to Arab population in Israel
Keren ,   IL-BR   (04.29.12)
I think( and I hope) that Israel knows how to put them in positions in that they will not be a threat and will have to serve the country they live in. I think it is just not fair they living in Israel and being exempt. Who knows if by compulsory service they get the h....out of here ,or if they stay, they become necessarily faithful for Israel.
6. incorporating haredi and arabs into israeli society...
Robert ,   USA   (04.29.12)
and doing it right so that it brings peace and not more unrest, is the most important item on Israel's social agenda -- ahead of rent reform, private ownerships of land, the settlements, etc. The Tal Law has proved to divide not unite, and needs to be changed. Lieberman has it right.
7. I agree with no.5
(04.29.12)
8. I agree with Bibi but...
Maurice ,   Montreal   (04.29.12)
...the ultra-Orthodox are not the ones that will be hardest to get to serve the country. What will he do about Israel's enemies from within: the Neturei Karta? The law must apply to them as well. Otherwise kick them all out to Gaza or Iran, their best friends!
9. yes arabs should do national service
yossi ,   Israel   (04.29.12)
I think some people here don't know the difference between national service and military service. to quote: "The new law will include civil service for Arabs. It should be done without pitting one sector against the other". A civil or national service can include hospitals, national parks, community service, etc. they (the arabs) can even do it in their communities.
10. Who cares why, just new elections!
Elad ,   Houston/Israel   (04.29.12)
Tal has to go. But if these haredim are only going to do government service then it is useless. They will not work for pay, why should they work for the government? The work that they do instead must be under close supervision, with immediate punishment for slackers, and in no way slow down the government and it's service to all Israelis.
11. Haredim are very arrogant to expect others to carry them
Rachel ,   US   (04.29.12)
It's time to share the security and economic burden of living in Israel. Secular Jews are tired of supporting able bodied Hareidi men who won't support their own families.
12. Its not that hard. The IDF made it HARD.
Bunnie Meyer ,   Los Angeles, CA USA   (04.29.12)
13. #8, Maurice
Professor Z ,   Jerusalem   (04.29.12)
Just curious, do you know how many members of Neturei Karta there are in the country?
14. Integration now, or segregation forever

Dear Eli, Haredim will eventually turn into a mayority, so why not getting familiar with the dinamics of this country???
16. Ok #4
Rivka   (05.02.12)
Lets wait until the haredim will turn into a majority as it will? Who is going to take care of the country? Specially on Shabbat? And of the economy? If you are turning in a mayority, as you will, then do it in a sustainable way. Other wise in 40 years ftom now you will be living in Babel tower and not Israel.
17. The sad part of this article...
Yosef ,   Jerusalem   (05.14.12)
The sad part of this article was when Nissim Zeev compared Hareidim to Arabs. He doesn't think they're alike, but if he thinks that they are just as a non-entity as the Arabs then something is seriously wrong.
