1. Lapid as usual is going after the popularist vote
zionist forever   (05.01.12)
Lapid has once again proven that he has nothing to contribute to the country other than haredi bashing. Thats all his worthless father knew how to do and its all he knows how to do, just a smile and a couple of speeches without any substance and everybody loves him. Only in Israel do we get people who have nothing to contribute other than their personality and fame and they are expected to win big in politics.
2. What about

The Arabs . Does he not know they exist. Are they to be exempt?
3. service

A nation worth living in is one all should be willing to support and serve in.

Dyslexic.. ,   Israel...   (05.01.12)
got my vote.He has a chance too change our way of politics. Not like the same politicians faces we see,we hear on TV everyday, faces that we are all sick of.
5. Dear Mr. Lapid
Sagi   (05.01.12)
I personally do not give a damn about the Haredim not serving in the military, they are good for nothing and will only be a burden, they are incapable of adapting themselves to a military environment. What I do care about is that you give a solemn promise to dedicate yourself to changing our farcical electoral and party system. If you can bring yourself to promise this to the public then you will garner many votes. I predict that without this you will very soon become a lame duck and sooner than you think, a dead one. Ami Ayalon, remember ?
6. pathetic
david ,   new york   (05.01.12)
like his dad, the only thing he has to offer is hatred for religious jews. let's call a spade a spade: does he love national religious jews who are the bulk of the combat units and serve beyond their numbers? does he hate seculars who avoid service, or seculars (like him) who go to the army in non-combat roles where they contribute little to the security of the state??
7. re #4: you don't like politician on tv??
david ,   new york   (05.01.12)
unless my memory serves me wrong, HE WAS A TV ANCHOR, what more glib F.O.S. person can there be??
8. He doesn't hate the haredi
James Nichols ,   Moscow United States   (05.01.12)
How does he hate the haredi? Show me one statement that shows he hates the haredi? All he's asking is for them to contribute to society by having them serve required to serve in the army or civil service like every other Jew in Israel. You call yourself Zionist foreever. Yet you bash Lapid simply for calling for everyone to contribute to society.

zionist forever   (05.01.12)
What exactly makes Lapid such a nice guy who is better than the other politicians? So far his only policy seems to be haredi bashing, this gentleman politician is one who intends to use politics of hatered to get himself elected. Lapid has no political background to look back on and admire and compliment, he doesn't even have any kind of career outside journalism, even in the IDF he was just a journalist so apart from the fact he is famous and his policies are just hate the haredi who nobody likes anyway so how is the country going to benefit by Yair Lapid's election?
10. to #2
Oz ,   Haifa   (05.01.12)
If you had actually read the article you would have got your answer! It clearly states that Arabs would do National service. I agree with Lapid, only in Israel do we bankroll humdreds of thousands of people who do not work and do not pay taxes. Where do they think the water comes from? the electricity, their food? It does not rain from the sky let me tell you that! It comes from the sweat and taxes of the secular public and those who work! No-where else in the world do haredim get free handouts (NYC, London etc.) and they get on fine
11. thats no fair solution...
Ze'ev ,   Nbg, germany   (05.01.12)
the haredim will be able still to dodge the draft, while still reciving money from the state. In other words, Lapids idea will change nothing.
12. HAPPY DAY TO ALL WORKERS
me   (05.01.12)
(except the lazy bloodsuckers leaders religious, politicians, businessmen and soldiers who do nothing, live off the taxes and on top consistently consume and serve all that the workers do and perform)
13. Didn't I just say
(05.01.12)
that Livni would make a good team with Lapid - two Haredi haters.
14. Create Haredi Hesder Yeshivot
Jo ,   Jerusalem   (05.01.12)
1st year learning 1.5 years serving 2 years mixed learning and serving. This system has worked very well with the national religious, there is no reason why it cannot work with Haredim was well.
15. WORK CAMPS FOR SOCALLED "ORTHODOX" PIOUS CON ARTISTS !

Gabriel ,   Leiden, Netherlands   (05.01.12)
You can of course change the Tal law, and compelling Haredim to serve in some way can also be arranged, but in theory only, I fear. How will you actually force them to do anything useful? You just can't physically compel people to do that. You can then cut their funding, which will result in a huge amount of human misery, suffered not only by the adults who refuse to do anything for the state, but their innocent children as well, which the state will not allow, I guess. Alternatively, you can also imprison the dodgers, but in that case, stop building settlements in Judea and Samaria, and start building prisons there (another way to settle the land, I guess), but those additional prisons you will need badly when push comes to shove. I could, being a relative outsider, be overseeing some things but it seems to me the whole deal amounts to a lose - lose situation, apart from the fact that the rioting will be absolutely massive. I know not all Haredim are against the state of Israel, but the social fabric of Haredi communities generally does not allow zionist sympathies, which they will take as being expressed by Haredi individuals who choose to join Tzahal. Result: the fear of being ostracized from their communities will prevent many pro-Israel Haredim from joining up.
18. A service contract must be enforced.
Michael ,   California, USA   (05.02.12)
Being a citizen means to serve the country and to receive services from country's government. It has nothing to do with religion or philosophy, It is a contract, no different from, say, crossing a street on a green light. If Haredim will not serve, they violate a contract and their citizenship should be taken away. Enforcing this contract shopuld be a declared goal of Lapid's candidacy.
19. Israeli politicians are extreme in their
Israeli 2   (05.02.12)
narcissism. #17: Gabriel: You are correct. Just like you cannot force an Arab to say our Tikvah, a religious Jew must out of his own conviction and will serve Tzahal.
20. Hence your name #4.
Israeli 2   (05.02.12)
21. Lapid for PM you just got my vote
Haim ,   TA   (05.02.12)
About time the harideem are made to serve in the IDF and work for a living, we can no longer support these parasites.
22. Haredim don't work? I saw lots of people at Sheba Chaim
Rivkah   (05.02.12)
Medical Center who looked like Haredim, especially women, who were working for a living. Their husbands may study for a living, but the wives bring in paychecks and raise children for a lot of them. Yair Lapid should beware of ever being in a hospital if he takes a stand against the Haredim other than requiring them to perform National Service since they might get even with him like the did with Ariel Sharon who was given an injectable blood thinner that was contraindicated for his condition after he offended the Haredim and the Rabbis put a curse on him.
23. Lapid has just lost my vote
Raptor   (05.02.12)
Nobody will get my vote unless all eligible Haredim are conscripted immediately and a solid promise is given to change our ridiculous electoral system. Unlike Marine Le Pen who stated that she will put an empty paper in the ballot box, I shall not even bother to attend the regular farce called "democracy"
24. PLEASE STOP PROMOTING THE LIES, MR. LAPID!
Riva schertzman ,   Betar Ilite   (05.02.12)
As the mother of a recently serving IDF Commando/Commander in the Nachal Hareidi, my son, who went on extremely dangerous missions and served the State well along with all his Haredi buddies, told me that the Nachal Hareidi Unit is getting overwhelming recruitment to the point that the IDF has to turn guys down. he say that their units are so excellent because these guys tend to me more disciplined from their religious background which sets healthy boundaries (unlike non religious guys entering the army who tend to be harder to control!) THE TIME HAS COME TO REALIZE THAT THIS ISSUE IS PAST AND ANY MENTION IS A STATEMENT OF HATE AGAINST HAREIDIM and undermines all the efforts of those brave and wonderful Hareidi guys who now serve! Furthermore, because there is almost NO money going to support guys who learn, many Hareidi men DO work and are taking advantage of the NEW educational programs to get DEGREES in all kinds of areas-to which it has been noted that they are fine students again from their more disciplined backgrounds! As a matter of fact, my other son, who also served in Nachal Hareidi got his BA in archeticture from one of these programs-unlike you Mr. Lapid who should not only get his BA before running for office but should stop making intensely ignorant and BOORISH statements like "We don't hate Hareidim" because it connotes you do!!!
25. Thank you Riva@ #24. The best answer.

26. #25
JDE ,   Boston, USA   (05.02.12)
"Thank you Riva@ #24. The best answer." Oh, please. She has a son in the military and another graduated from university. She's obviously on the leftmost fringe of the black hat world and considers herself "Haredi", but has no clue as to what's going on in the real Haredi world..
