1. Mazel Tov on the inventiveness, let the EU pay Israel.
Bunnie Meyer ,   Los Angeles, CA USA   (05.18.12)
And, so what if you can't sell caviar in Israel because it is not kosher, doesn't obeying the source of your prosperity mean anything?
2. #1 - Because blackmail is wrong
Ben ,   Chutzlaaretz   (05.18.12)
Obeying the source of thier propserity? Sorry, but the Rabbinute has NOTHING to do with their prosperity. If they want to sell the Sturgeon cavier in Israel, it is no-one's business unless they mark it as Kosher. And before you claim G-d is their source of prosperity and that is who you mean they should obey.. The interpretation that Bluga Sturgeon isn't Kosher, is solely human!

Yaniv ,   Israel   (05.19.12)
The toxicity in beasts, birds and fish varies in different species. Trout is high in toxicity, thus unclean and not kosher.
8. #6 You're wrong. Trout doesn't have scales.
Yaniv ,   Israel   (05.19.12)
9. who cares about scales
josh ,   nyc   (05.20.12)
You're kidding me - an argument about whether a trout has scales or not? This is what Judaism is about, scales on a fish??
10. Is it Kosher?
Rolly Heffez ,   Tampa, US   (05.20.12)
People, people, the issue here isn't really whether trout is kosher or not, the issue here is that someone either forgot or is refusing to make the required "donation" to the Rabbis that sit on the Kashrut board. And by the way, trout IS Kosher.
11. No. 9 Josh
NYC Girl   (05.20.12)
It's bad enough there are still Jews who will debate this kind of trivia ad nauseum. Is this really the essence of what Judaism is in the 21st century? But what make it even worse is their attempt to inflict this nonsense on a secular country like Israel...where the majority of citizens aren't even religious.
12. Nonsense. Trout has fins and easily removable scales.
Raymond in DC ,   Washington, USA   (05.20.12)
There's no question that trout is kosher. All that's going on here is that the rabbinical authority is threatening not to provide a kosher certificate for the kibbutz' trout if they attempt to sell the caviar - which comes from sturgeon, which is not kosher - in Israel. As long as it goes overseas, they apparently don't care. Here's a list of Trout varieties deemed kosher (from the web site of a kosher food scientist): Trouts (Salmo species) Brown trout, rainbow trout or steelhead, cutthroat trout, golden trout, Chars (Salvelinus species); Lake trout, brook rout, Arctic char (salvelinus alpinus), Dolly Varden, Whitefishes and ciscos (coregonus species and Prosopium species); Cisco or lake herring (Corengonus artedii); chubs (coregonus species); graylings (thymallus Species)

14. #12 is right on the money....
froike ,   NY NY   (05.20.12)
All Salmo spp, which includes all species of Salmon and Trout have the Simanim of Kosher Fish: Scales, Fins, and Backbones. Sturgeons, were a machloket...They are ancient creatures who have very small scales but do not posess a back bone as in most Osteichthys or true fishes. Most authorities hold that they are not Kosher. But what's the problem marketing them to non Jews? Josh, you are what we refer to as a "Grubbe Yingel"! On passover you'd fall somewhere between the evil son or the simpleton. Best to keep your comments to yourself and just let people assume you're an ignoramus, rather than proving them correct by publishing your stupidity.
