31. Not all Irish
Richie ,   Dublin, Ireland   (05.11.12)
are like that. Many of us are very pro-Israel. Those who make vile accusations against Israel are quite loud, but don't think that represents Irish people. I, for one, love Israel and I get there every year. I'm not a Jew but I do believe Jews deserve their own state to live in self-determination, free from the persecution they suffered in Europe, the Arab states and Russia over the last 2000 years
32. Phenomenal.
gelb   (05.11.12)
I never read a more astoundingly well written assessment of the Irish. My utmost appreciation. I never was in Ireland, that rot*en God-forsaken place and if everything goes well in my life, never will.
33. do you really expect a nation forged in the soul of the cath
oferdesade ,   israel   (05.11.12)
olic church to be comprised of thinking individuals? it's like seeking independant thought in meah shearim.
34. beware
mike north ,   karmiel israel   (05.11.12)
Ireland is now the new Israel hater-or is it just the cover up of the new antisemitism sweeping the world. But beware, sooner than later your national "shrines"-the pubs-will be shouted down to be closed by your new neighbours calling for sharia law.And be careful not to trip over the carpet on the next corner
35. Ireland and the nazis
Mahlon Drumgoole ,   Newark NJ USA   (05.11.12)
Basically, the Irish have no sense of decency. During WWII, they not only refused to help the Allies defeat Hitler, they were in active collaboration with the nazis. Interestingly, Northern Ireland is divided on the question of Israel. The protestants support Israel while the catholics support the Palestinians. After the Holocaust, one would think that antisemitism would be unacceptable in civilized countries. Not in Christian Europe and especialy in catholicIreland.
36. Who cares what the Irish people think?
(05.11.12)
Let them drown in their ignorance.
37. Left but not liberal...
Abie Dee ,   New York, US   (05.11.12)
We all need to stop referring to these groups as 'liberal'. They may be 'left' but, no way are they 'liberal', which the dictionary defines as 'tolerant, open-minded'. These groups have more in common with fundamentalist organizations such as Hamas and Hezbollah. Let's define them by their actions...they are militant hate groups.
38. Don't worry about traveller central
Bartle ,   UK   (05.11.12)
The little green ones are always drunk. And they believe in the silliest of all religions: Catholicism. Best to ignore them. Just think of all the idiots that post on ynet from Ireland, including that dunce Phil. Keep in mind they're just children.
39. Sloganeer Chas.Israeli Arab judge sentenced Jewish President
PETER SM ,   MELBOURNE AUSTRALIA   (05.11.12)
of Israel.! Spin that in dialectic, while you are at it explain Israeli Arab deputy speaker, ambassador professors, professionals working alongside Israelis ,high ranking military officers etc etc. Do you people actually read anything besisdes your own one eyed propoganda, let alone think outside group think.? Love it when leftist Islamist camp followers preach human rights, its an oxymoron
40. This is a great article!

41. Roots of Irish Anti-Semitism
David ,   Tel Aviv, Israel   (05.11.12)
Of course not all Irish are anti-Semitic, but there is a strong stream in the national consciousness based on Catholic teachings of the last thousand years or so. Also the fact that the Irish see themselves as the victims of British Imperialism for hundreds of years, and identify with Jews on a deep level, who they see as victims as well. Israel does not behave like a victim (just the opposite in fact) and has been at war since its inception, which offends the Irish view of what a Jew is supposed to be. In short, its an anti-Semitism based on a strong feeling of connection with their idea of who a Jew is supposed to be and Israel's perceived failure to live up to this constructed idea. Israel's behavior is very disturbing to the Irish because it questions their own response to British oppression, their own victimhood, and how a victim is supposed to behave.. The Irish narrative is essentially a Catholic one- that a victim (embodied in the Jesus story) is always supposed to turn the other cheek - not that this strategy helped them much in their own disastrous history. Obvious expressions of anti-Semitism are no longer acceptable since the Shoah, so these emotions usually come out in the form of Israel bashing. Its an anti-Semitism based on envy and their own painful history, but the result is still anti-Semitism.
42. Why does anyone care?
Sarah B ,   U.S.A. / Israel   (05.11.12)
The next candidate in the European Union for bankruptcy is none other than Ireland. Ignore them. They don't matter to anyone, in any event. They've really never been able to step away from Roman Catholicism-driven hatred of Jews. They are reaping what they have sown. Does anyone remember that when Israel destroyed all those ersatz "Palestinian" terrorist training camps in Lebanon, better than half of the "trainees" were discovered to be Irish? The G-d of Israel neither sleeps nor slumbers, and Ireland has one trotter over the edge of the abyss. Have a nice free fall into complete obscurity.
43. Tim # 23 Don't forget your own history
Eaglebeak ,   Left Coast, USA   (05.11.12)
The Irish aren't an invented people like the Palestinians. Have you ever wondered why Arafat who was the head of the ersatz Palestinians was Egyptian? When the British ruled the middle east if you were Palestinian you were a Jew. Everybody else were considered Arabs. Before you post such nonsense you should consider what America did to the Indians before you point your finger at Israel. Don't forget your own history buster.
44. Richie.Much appreciated,its never all or none.Even in
PETER SM ,   AUSTRALIA   (05.11.12)
Berlin Jews survived the war hidden by very brave Germans.Poland also had many heroic righteous people who risked their lives to save Jews.
45. No.6, Sean, I like your comment and your
Eternal Israeli   (05.11.12)
attitude, but more and more bad news comes from Ireland about official and semi-official policy towards my country. And I wonder, why on earth a beautiful country in western Europe should be so bent on only one single, little country like mine right in the middle of the Middle east? Is it anti-Semitism disguised in anti-Israeli open hatred, is it the centuries long Catholic hate doctrine, is it intense, ardous love of everything Palestinian ( a so-called name for the Israeli Arabs) or unconditional love of everything Islamic? Or maybe, an endemic, pathological problem with quite a large number of Irish thugs? This way or that, the Irish government prides themselves with digging they heads, necklong into the Irish cold Atlantic sand. And that is shameful at least and outright criminal by all international standards. To keep silent in the face of anti-Semitic and anti-Israeli ultra-left wing demonization of Israel, foul mouthing and foul-writing is not at all comendable. On the contrary, it shows again and again that Ireland is still far from calling herself a grown-up, responsible democracy. This way or that, Israel will THIS TIME find infinite ways of defending herself and her citizens, including the Arab ones and the catholic ones, as well. This summer I intended to finally visit beautiful Ireland, but surely I lost my appetite.
46. Irish role in holocaust.
Istvan ,   BUDAPEST HUNGARY   (05.11.12)
Rev Coughlin was a second Goebbels in the US. Thank to his activity a part of american society was against entering the war and supported the german nazis. They realised that jewish refugees were rejected from US. The basis of this movement was primarly the irish catholic population.
47. What's the matter Chasa boy? Cat got your tongue. No
PETER SM ,   AUSTRALIA   (05.11.12)
reply without group think? Don't like facts too much do you? Care to tell us about human rights amongst your pets? Not PC to comment or you are just another antisemite hiding behind self righteous slogans?
48. 27. You are wrong, But I imagine to explain you is a loss ..
Ari ,   Jerusalem   (05.11.12)
of time you have a fix-wrong ideas what is Israel. Of course Israel is a Jewish country. But Cristians and Moslems are not persecuted. After 2000 Years of persecution by cristians and moslems finally Jews have a right of return to their land. Moslems were oposed to it from the start. Not because Jews robbed arab lands; they bought them, but because by Moslem standard anything that was Islamic cannot cease to be Islamic. So for Islam Israel is anatema. Because a Jew or a "non believer" can govern a muslim. While Jordanians held East Jerusalem Jews were fobiding to live there. While Israel governs in Jerusalem; 220.000 arabs most of them (self called Palestinians- Same called themselves Jordanians not Palestinians 45 years ago before the 6 day war. Live now there You repeat like a parrot what you hear about Israel and start believing you own lies. Como to Israel and see by yourself. For example 25% of Israeli doctors are arabs it's a reflection of the arab population. We have arab parlamentarians. How many parlamentarina had the Jewish comunities in arab countries before the creation of Israel. More than one million Jews lived there. While the arab popilation has grown in this 64 years. Jews were thrown away or killed in the arab lands since 1948. Today the arab ME is practically JUDENREIN (Is that Democracy? You complain about Israel?)
49. 23. What is democracy to you in Israel.?
Ari ,   Jerusalem   (05.11.12)
That arabs kill us throw us to the see to regain lands that were not robed, to regain lands that today are flourishing gardens and yesterday were wilderness. Arabs dont recognized the right of Jews in Israel. Get it to your scull. They are making a Palestinian State "Free of Jews" But Israel accepts 1.2 million arabs big difference no?
50. I know a sweet, wonderful lady from Dublin...
Noodles ,   Coney Island   (05.11.12)
(not Jewish) who comes to Jerusalem twice a year and stays for a month or two at a time. She claims that she just loves being in Israel, and who am I to argue? She has invited me to come out and stay at her place in Dublin, and I'm actually giving it some semi-serious thought.
51. #29 this is called Anti-Semitism, it's really that simple
(05.11.12)
52. Ireland is very antisemitic. Morally and financially bankrup
Sami ,   New York, USA   (05.11.12)
Ireland is very antisemitic. Morally and financially bankrupt.
53. (29) Rick
tiki ,   belgium   (05.11.12)
"It's astonishing that democratic & free speech Israel has been chosen by the self-appointed guardians of public virtue". It's not!!!!! There are to many JEWS living there and worse....succesfull JEWS, Intelligent JEWS & yes..... rich JEWS! That's what it's all about! These groups care about the "Palestinians like you care about last years snow in Alaska.....not! It's the JEWISH succes story called ISRAEL which bothers them.....a lot!
54. Don t err,this is a war on Jews.
ORA ,   JERUSALEM   (05.11.12)
All these antisemitic events in Europa are a cruelly reminder of PREWW11. With the difference that nowadays Jews have a homeland.
55. Is Ireland a special case?
Tim ,   Brighton   (05.11.12)
The majority of Irish can see both sides of this conflict and express sensible arguments one way or another What we have here are a small group of Activists who one wouldnt describe so much as Pro Palestinian as visciously Anti Israel and racist Since the 'Fartillas' where the Irish Contingent played the most vocal and active part Ive been looking at their backgrounds and following their rantings...at some of their local meetings...where they give full vent to their true beliefs...The emphasis of their rantings is almost always dominated by pure Anti Jewish propaganda. Some of their rhetoric would put the SS to shame These people are simply vile racists who use the Palestinian Cause to justify Anti Jewish racism And thats why the Governments in Ireland, in Norway..and others are so 'confused' and turn a blind eye. They dont want to be seen to stifle political debate and activism relating to Israel and the Palestinians but as one Norwegian Politician said recently - The Politicians are realising that and are fearful that many of these so called Activists are simply using this Platform to promote and give FREE REIGN to out and out racism And the irony? Two countries that make a virtue of freedom and tolerance
56. ireland antisemitism yes indeed
dr daniel mostrel ,   paris france   (05.11.12)
i boycott ireland , i don't want to give my money to this vile country
57. The voice of Ireland.
Paul Sheaf ,   Liverpool UK   (05.11.12)
It's nice to hear some opinions from Ireland, I think #6 is talking a lot of sense. We never usually hear the voice of reason from the silent majority, I wish though that more would speak out. Being Jewish can be a lonely and daunting vocation at times.
58. My grandparents hailed from Ireland, before the
arlene ,   israel   (05.11.12)
republic, as Jews in a catholic country, then ran by the priests, they knew nothing but warmth and friendship from their non jewish neighbors. Times were hard and they had the opportunity to make a better living elsewhere, as many Irish did. I visit Eire a lot and haven't as yet felt the anti Israelism of these nutters mentioned in this artical. They are NOT Ireland or the Irish people. Most of the Irish just get on with stuff, drink their guinness and sing their rebel songs in the pubs. There are also these crazies in Israel, but bet none of them would be willing to go and live in Gaza or anyway ruled by islam! They can't see further than the "pallywood" propaganda and maybe should put their resources in places that really do need their help. Gaza with posh hotels, malls and now their airline seem to be doing OK, but media will only be allowed to photograph the shanty towns which are kept for this purpose.
59. Of course these leftist groups center on
Meghan ,   Israel   (05.11.12)
