1. thanks for that, but why is it a problem at all?
Mary   (05.22.12)
Youre right, bad people and good people are everywhere mixed. But, why is treating people at Sabbat by a Jewish doctor divided in treating a Jew and treating a gentile at all? Why is the obligation to treat every human being by every doctor (Pythagoras) for Judaism not enough?
2. Treating on Shabbat
Yuda Kahn ,   Jerusalem-Brooklyn   (05.22.12)
Rabbi Avadia did indeed recommend treating non Jews on Shabbot -just in a manner that least contravenes the Sabbath. What's wrong with saving lives and keeping Shabbat at the same time?
3. is there a better way?
tom ,   toronto, canada   (05.22.12)
rabbi ovadiah yosef often makes statements that trigger controversy. while rabbi brackman is entitled to express his views, wouldn't it make sense for the media to publish as much of the actual text of rabbi ovadiah yosef's actual pronouncements as possible, instead of just misleading excerpts? isn't that what "reporting" is supposed to be?
4. Leviticus
Ariel ,   São Paulo - Brazil   (05.22.12)
Laura Schlessinger is a US radio personality who dispenses advice to people who call in to her radio show. Recently, she said that as an observant Orthodox Jew, she holds that homosexuality is an abomination according to Leviticus 18:22 and cannot be condoned in any circumstance. The following is an open letter to Dr. Laura penned by a US resident, which was posted on the Internet. Dear Dr. Laura: Thank you for doing so much to educate people regarding God's Law. I have learned a great deal from your show, and I try to share that knowledge with as many people as I can. When someone tries to defend the homosexual lifestyle, for example, I simply remind them that Leviticus 18:22 clearly states it to be an abomination. End of debate. I do need some advice from you, however, regarding some of the specific laws and how to follow them. a) When I burn a bull on the altar as a sacrifice, I know it creates a pleasing odour for the Lord (Lev. 1:9). The problem is my neighbors. They claim the odour is not pleasing to them. Should I smite them? b) I would like to sell my daughter into slavery, as sanctioned in Exodus 21:7. In this day and age, what do you think would be a fair price for her? c) I know that I am allowed no contact with a woman while she is in her period of menstrual uncleanliness (Lev. 15:19-24). The problem is, how do I tell? I have tried asking, but most women take offense. d) Lev. 25:44 states that I may indeed possess slaves, both male and female, provided they are purchased from neighboring nations. A friend of mine claims that this applies to Mexicans, but not Canadians. Can you clarify? Why can't I own Canadians? e) I have a neighbor who insists on working on the Sabbath. Exodus 35:2 clearly states he should be put to death. Am I morally obligated to kill him myself? f) A friend of mine feels that even though eating shellfish is an abomination (Lev. 11:10), it is a lesser abomination than homosexuality. I don't agree. Can you settle this? g) Lev. 21:20 states that I may not approach the altar of God if I have a defect in my sight. I have to admit that I wear reading glasses. Does my vision have to be 20/20, or is there some wiggle room here? h) Most of my male friends get their hair trimmed, including the hair around their temples, even though this is expressly forbidden by Lev.19:27. How should they die? i) I know from Lev. 11:6-8 that touching the skin of a dead pig makes me unclean, but may I still play football if I wear gloves? j) My uncle has a farm. He violates Lev. 19:19 by planting two different crops in the same field, as does his wife by wearing garments made of two different kinds of thread (cotton/polyester blend). He also tends to curse and blaspheme a lot. Is it really necessary that we go to all the trouble of getting the whole town together to stone them? (Lev. 24:10-16) Couldn't we just burn them to death at a private family affair like we do with people who sleep with their in-laws? (Lev. 20:14) I do look forward to your enlightenment regarding the questions that puzzle me. Then I shall pass them along to others who may appreciate your moral leadership. Sincerely.
5. Stop being ashamed of you own religion.
Daniel ,   Crown Heights, NY   (05.22.12)
A Jew should dedicate his day of Shabbat to spiritual matters. There are many opinions on this matter going back to the Mishnah & Talmud itself. In fact it is clear in Halacha itself that one should not break the Shabbat for a non-Jew. In fact many of those who are lenient only do so because by leaving the hospitals fully operational on Shabbat ultimately helps Jewish people too. This does not mean we dispresect non-jews. They can have their doctors if they like. Yet it is a halachic problem. In addtion, a "Ger-Toshav" may be different.(A reichous non-jew living in Israel may be a different matter to a gaza terrorist) Rabbi Brackman should not be embarrassed to address the issue instead of bad mouthing Rabbi Ovadiah Yospeh. (I am not at all the biggest supporter of Rabbi Ovadiah Yospeh, particularly due to his participation of the Oslo accords.) Yet he deserves respect for confronting this problem. Rabbi Moshe Feinstein & Rabbi I. J. Unterman, are not the only authorities.
6. The Religion of War and Destruction
Robert Soran-Schwarz ,   Earth   (05.22.12)
No other religion in world history was built around so much real social, politic, ethnic and religious war, killing, murder and genocide than the religion of the chosen people. I am asking here all people of faith or honesty to show me otherwise. You won't succeed. If Judaism is a peaceful religion, then all other religions in world history are from another, better world.
7. judaism
arab   (05.22.12)
the worst religion of the world:racist, materialist, selfish, usurers and merchants, individualist and superiority, hatred and furious.Look all around the globe if judaism emanates darkness ,the world is dark and that is what happens
8. cha-BAD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

9. To Schwarze @#6:
Israeli 2   (05.22.12)
Knowledge is important. Everyone can be educated. It does not mean they know. The first thing you ought to KNOW is that "Judaism" is not a religion. It never was. It is A WAY OF LIFE. We Jews follow the way of the Torah. By the way, you answered your own question when you wrote: 'real". We are dealing with REALITY - A WAY OF LIFE.
10. Treatment
amazing ,   israel   (05.22.12)
Can Ovadia Josef be treated in Shabat by a non Jew Physician? I fear that the Rab will say: Yes.
11. follow the torah
shredready   (05.23.12)
of course you do not say that 99% of the halacha is not mentioned in the torah neither does the torah discuss this issue it is man made even if one thinks teh torah was written by god
12. @5 - Daniel, Crown Heights
Jake in Jerusalem ,   Jerusalem, Israel   (05.22.12)
Daniel, from your apparent address in Crown Heights, it sounds like you are another immature and naive follower of Chabad. Worse yet, from the indignant ignorance portrayed in your talkback, it is quite likely! Please don't try and discredit R' Moshe Feinstein, the greatest Posek of our time. I was at R. Moshe Feinstein's funeral together with thousands of Jews from all walks of life. I haven't forgotten the notable absence of Lubes from that funeral, as they were all occupied at yet another Farbrengen, in CH, where most understood narry a word. If you can't respect Gedolei HaDor, how can you possibly understand the respect that non-Jews also deserve? If you think that Toras HaChasidus replaces Toras Moshe, then you have no part in society - Jewish or otherwise.
13. R' Moshe
Jon ,   Bronx   (05.23.12)
I'd recommend reading R' Moshe Feinstein inside for yourselves. He is being sorely misquoted and misrepresented. But, as usual, ha-mevin yavin.
14. Pot calling kettles black.
Tarbouche ,   Aswan   (05.23.12)
Menahem Mendlel Scheerson was allowing abodah zarah through a wine offering in worship of himself by his chasidim, the first and last time I was at a febrengen at 770, late 1980's The Vilna and the Jews of the mizrah had a cherem on chassidim, as it invariably led to rebbe worship. It is only my opinion, that Chabad represents an entirely new religion, and has less to do with judaism that christianity did at the same stage of development.
15. Rabbi Yosef right & wrong
Norman Gellman ,   Rehovot   (05.23.12)
Rabbi Yosef's reading regarding treating nonJews on th Sabbath is correct when taken exactly as written. However, modern reasing says that a Jewish doctor refusing treatment to a nonJew on the Sabbath will not be understood as a requirement of Halcha. This will lead to hatred of Jews and even violent acts against Jews so that refusing Sabbth treatment will cause a situation of "Pekuah Nefesh" for Jews and therefore tratment of a nonJew on the Sabbth is both premitted & required.
16. #6 robert - you are right...
solomon ,   bklyn   (05.23.12)
No other religion has been affected by religious war, killing, murder and genocide than the Jewish religion. They try and kill the Jews off between bouts of killing everyone else who doesn’t pray as they do, sometimes killing adherents to their same beliefs. If the world would ever stop the killing, murder and attempted genocide of Jews the world would be a better place. The first step is for you to open your eyes and read a bit of history. Your post shows you to be totally ignorant of reality and afraid of opening your eyes. You should be afraid, as the world is nothing like you want it to be. Welcome to your own fantasyland.
17. #7 arab - you are right...
solomon ,   bklyn   (05.23.12)
except you have just described much of (if not most) of Islam. You are welcome to your own world of darkness, just stop pretending that "its someone else's fault".
18. # 5 Daniel, you are a pig
Stan ,   Israel   (05.23.12)
All doctors in Israeli hospitals be they Jews or Arabs, and there are many Arab doctors in Israel's hospitals, treat all patients the same, also on Shabbat. Rambam (Maimonides) was a great doctor and a great Jew. If he were allive today we would not have all these "little people" pushing their Halacha into health matters.
19. #7 You are a bigot and an idiot.
Zvi   (05.23.12)
20. At least the author shows a better image
Charles ,   Petach Tikva   (05.23.12)
of the Jewish religion . It's called HUMANITY , not racism . As to the "solution" given by ovadia , to hold a scalpel with two hands , well try it ! Great "succes" assured !
21. The very need to have a ruling is shameful
Vered, Israel   (05.24.12)
and indicative of how silly Orthodox Judaism can be. The very IDEA that we need a “bold and ingenious legal maneuver" to allow our doctors to act like civilized human beings, forget being a light to the nations, is so shameful! The very IDEA that students are sitting in class listening to a rabbi wax on about the legal aspects of helping Gentiles in need is an absolute waste of time, and a disgrace. It's a shame when we have to debate, and get legal rulings in order to behave in a way that any regular-Joe-nice person would say, "Well OF COURSE we should help anyone in need, no matter what the day!"
22. saving a gentile on the sabbath
harvey gefen ,   toronto canada   (02.15.13)
the torah sets out that man is created in the image of g-d.it also command you to love the foreigner the same as yourself your brother and your fellow israelite. g--d the creator is telling us that we are all equal in responsibilities and obligations to each other.a halacha that is incosistent with g-ds law must be reversed and not by a legal fiction
23. saving a gentile on the sabbath
harvey gefen ,   toronto canada   (02.16.13)
by limiting one mans obligations to another you are debasing the value of another.the torah states "stand not by the blood of thy neihbour so that you will not have blood on your hands".the sanctity of man inclluding jews is the ethical cornerstone of judaism.
24. gentiles and sabbath
h.g. ,   toronto canada   (02.16.13)
the halacha not to break the sabbath to save a gentile does not reflect an understanding of toraic law.when the laws were given to israejthey were given "to live by".here there is a dilemma in that you must decide which of g-ds laws to fo break.that is which one has more importance .the laws were given to live by and therefore the saving of life takes precedense.an inhumane halacha reflects badly on jews judaism and worse on the torah .
25. sabbath and gentiles
harvey gefen   (02.16.13)
re. #6.i am not ashamed by judaism i am ashamed by rabbis which denigrate non-jews by halachas which contradictthe laws of g-d .the torah states that when a foreigner ,a ger comes to your land treat him like homeborne one law toyou all.the rabbis limit our humane treatment only to ger toshavs converts to judaism erroniously.
