1. How do sociology professors get to be "experts" on Chassidim
L ,   Merkaz, Israel   (05.20.12)
...experts on the "Ultra-Orthodox"?!? With his nose looking down from his "cultured" ivory tower (that's what sociologists do, don't you know: study "those primitives"), how can he profess to know what "They think" when he is so completely apart? His superior snobbism is highly apparent. There was a BBC documentary about Hassidim in America which also featured numerous bow-tied professors who pronounced their authority on Hassidim, who also had a similar perpetual condescedingly amused smile as they spoke about "them". I can't help but be amused in turn. They wouldn't understand Hassidus if the smell of the chollent was wafting under their noses. A world apart, indeed.
2. It has nothing to do with "opening to the outside world",it
(05.20.12)
has more to do with being a brain-drain and/or having an open sewage line in your pocket or on your desk. The news has become non-news, competing for attention with the goriest detailed stories, the most shocking cover photos, the most scantily clad people, the most.....MOST. ...and the demand increases for more and more. More shock. More horror. More vicarious living. People sit at their computers and do NOTHING. They read about other peoples triumphs, other peoples crimes, other peoples tragedies and feel like they've experienced something when they've gone nowhere and done nothing. ....and the craving to fill that vaccum of their empty lives with more of someone else's intensity increases...more, more MORE. Sometimes when it's seen it all it turns to the bizarre, the distorted the depraved....in a quest for more....that is a bottomless pit.... Stop. Shut it off. Turn off your phone or computer for an hour or two and be alone with your own brain. Every day. Shhh. Just think and ask yourself what you are doing every day? Where are you going? What does your life mean? How can you make it mean more? BE more.
3. They are only trying to find a remedy
ORA ,   JERUSALEM   (05.20.12)
to the great dangers of internet. A powerful engine needs a powerful brake.
4. The people who write these articles
Dave ,   Israel   (05.20.12)
Whats with all this childish terminology "charedim are doing this charedim are doing that" the people who write these articles have serious emotional issues and old biases from childhood that they never actually thought about
5. Handcuffs for the mind
Yakov ,   Tel Aviv   (05.20.12)
As a secular, I am saddened by the constant attempts of the religious to control thought. This is in no way, relegated only to Judaism. The major force behind these attempts, is fear, not religious doctrine. The article says this right at the start, "Ultra-Orthodox Jews who believe that the Internet threatens their way of life". Why? What is the threat? If people are allowed to view the internet, they will choose to leave the Ultra-Orthodox life? Does this mean that they are being held as prisoners? Mind control, as this is, is only a method to enslavement! Nothing else!
6. 3 Rabbinic remedy contravenes free choice, education and IQ
Thinking Jew ,   Israel   (05.20.12)
The new law expanding governments right to spy on Israeli citizens will absolutely find its way into the hands of rabbis. Then we'll have nightmare thought police.
7. The WWW and the Haredim.
Kevin John Lee ,   Glasgow/UK   (05.20.12)
I guess one needs to consider the web! as being alike the first-time a printing-press came into being, the Torah by Paperback, Ye-G-ds. Shalom L"atem
8. 6 You are such a deep thinker....
ORA ,   JERUSALEM   (05.20.12)
The trouble is,i have a serious concentration problem. The government made a law allowing to spy the Israeli citizens....and the Rabbis are to blame?????????
9. 8 Repeat: Rabbinic remedy contravenes free choice, educ & IQ
Thinking Jew ,   Israel   (05.20.12)
Don't be so superficial, evading the issue by your antics. Deal with it. The rest was for others to consider.
10. 9 EVERY Jew has the free choice...
ORA ,   JERUSALEM   (05.21.12)
to accept the Tora laws or to reject them. The way without Tora is full of dangers. Concerning the education, many secular parents send their children in religious schools, because it is a saver place. Gemara study is known to develop the IQ. You are not superficial, but when you stop thinking, don t forget to start again,Mr.Thinking Jew. Lol. Any other questions?
11. #9 Ora, you're wrong
Allan ,   PT   (05.21.12)
Jews do not have the choice to keep Torah Laws or not. Every Jew is obligated to keep all the Torah laws just like non-Jews are obligated to keep the 7 Noahide Laws and don't have a choice.
12. internet use to be studied
moron ,   galut   (05.21.12)
this seems sensible as the alternative is to not think about it at all and become a mind numbed zombie-not jewish way
13. 12 Your right 10 doesn't get it that it IS the Haredi way
Thinking Jew ,   Israel   (05.21.12)
But your right that it isn't the Jewish way.
14. 10 None more ignorant in Jewish world than Haredim
Thinking Jew ,   Israel   (05.21.12)
Ignorance is NOT free choice. I see you'll never learn. You just keep regurgitating the same empty platitudes you've been taught without engaging your neurons.
15. 11 Alan Ask an orthodox Rabbi.
ORA ,   JERUSALEM   (05.21.12)
16. 14 Wrong. Ignorance of our OWN...
ORA ,   JERUSALEM   (05.21.12)
culture, the Tora, seems to be free choice. Did i give you the impression, that i am interested ,in your opinion about me? If you want to debate with me, let us keep the discussion on the plan of ideas.
17. not only with beard etc
paul ,   london   (05.21.12)
clean shaven professionals , bankers, lawyers, accountants etc. all part of this gathering
18. 16 Pointing out foolishness is neither
Thinking Jew ,   Israel   (05.21.12)
1. an invitation that you're worthy to debate nor 2. any indication that your opinion is valued Its merely pointing out your foolishness to others
19. 18 Others need your comments...
ORA ,   JERUSALEM   (05.21.12)
