What they did is disgusting and illegal, but they appear to have bought organs and did not steal them from corpses, as was suggested previously in similar scandals. China donates the organs of executed prisoners, while some countries assume you want to donate unless you clearly opt out. There are a lot of ethical issues to be ironed out.

Thank you for your kind words. However, perhaps you can explain to me why so many Canadians come south of the border when they need surgery? They are willing to pay dearly for it. Is the waiting time for anything but critical surgery that long in Canada? I imagine the answer is "yes." That said, I imagine that the waiting list for available organs for transplant is just as long in Canada as it is anywhere else. Desperate people (who can afford it) will pay any price for a kidney. Dialysis is not kind to the body, and there's always the likelihood of someone sicker than you going on the list ahead of you. It's not a pretty scenario, but the rules that govern transplants are not as rigorously maintained as some people would like to believe. For example, in the United States, former baseball star Mickey Mantle went to the top of the list for a liver transplant despite the fact that he was terminally ill of cancer. He got his transplant, and survived all of four days. Someone else should have gotten that liver, but they probably did not hit as many homeruns. They may not have been chronic alcoholics (which Mickey Mantle was) and thus responsible for the damage to their liver, either, but -- they didn't hit as many homeruns. Another example which comes to mind, also having to do with a liver transplant, is David Crosby. He was also a chronic long-term alcoholic and drug user, but he had a lot of gold and platinum records, so he went right to the top of the list, despite being responsible for his ailment. Someone far more deserving died because this drug user and alcohol abuser got a liver. Organs do not readily come available, and when it becomes apparent that the waiting lists are not governed as fairly as they might be -- desperate people will pay for organs (not livers, but certainly kidneys). I dread the day that someone wealthy enough and sick enough decides that they no longer wish to wait for a heart to come available through normal channels. Anyway -- Canada's much vaunted health care system (easy when you have 30 million people; probably not so easy when you have 300 million people) has deep flaws, which accounts for so many Canadians seeking surgery in the United States. I am quite certain that Canadians are not free of kidney disease, and are willing to pay handsomely for a viable kidney rather than wait years and years. I don't know that any of us would do differently in similar circumstances -- either pay to acquire a desperately-needed kidney or put one up for sale in order to feed the family and keep a roof over the heads of that family.

If you google canada and organ trafficking, you will see that it happens. There is one story, which you will find "Toronto man who bought kidney abroad is key witness in transplant sale trial in Kosovo" It clearly is a problem and it happens with all nationalities. Sarah B is correct

...they were called antisemites. I guess the Israeli police are antisemites too.

Don't be so smug. When the Swedish press reported the story, the ONLY country singled out was Israel. Not a single other country was mentioned, despite quite a few others being named, and even accused as willing participants and abettors. That's a selective bit of reporting, wouldn't you agree? So it was a case of anti-Semitism, something which we have come to expect from the Swedish press.
