As an endocrinologist, I can offer you an explanation for the transgender phenomenon which is based on current state of scientific knowledge. A person's gender identity is based on the development of the brain centers which impart us with that sense -- am I a girl or a boy. If these specific neurons in the brain are, during the process of fetal development, insensitive to the predominant hormone -- testosterone in genetic boys and estrogen in genetic girls -- the gender identity which develops will not be in alignement with DNA and with the develpoment of internal and external sex organs. Thus the child that is genetically and physically a boy feels like a girl (and vice versa) because that part of the brain developed to feel like a girl. I think it is quite easy to imagine that this condition is very confusing to a child and potentially a source of great emotional confusion and distress. It demands understanding and compassion, not derision and condemnation.

Because it doesn't present a solution. Men and women -- genetically distinct entities -- cannot change who and what they are on the basis of gender reassignment. They cannot change their unique ways of approaching things -- such as problem solving -- and they cannot rid themselves of (depending) their second X chromosome or their Y chromosome. It's cosmetic surgery. Like all cosmetic surgeries, it doesn't cure. It simply changes the physical appearance. Sometimes that's for the good. But not always.
