I'm not sure that he was convicted of "espionage" I have read that it was "unauthorised possession of secret documents" and his plea-bargain was supposed to have resulted in a sentence of not more than 4 years. It's WELL KNOWN that many convicted spies have been released after serving an average of 2 years. Most of them for far more serious crimes. There is onviously something very deep behind this implacible prrsecution which will likely never be revealed.
