1. civil marriage or intermarriage?
Sherlock Holmes ,   London England   (07.03.12)
Israeli Law permits Jewish, Muslim and Christian marriages, each religion having autonomy. Civil marriage seems to be a code word for intermarriage. Let intermarriages remain part of the Diaspora with Reform. Divorce must be with a 'Get' to avoid problems with children born in a second marriage.
2. 'Jewish Studies'
Joseph ,   London UK   (07.03.12)
How do you separate Jewish Studies from History and Literature of Israel? The Bible and Jewish Holidays are part of Israeli culture. Our very claim to Eretz Israel is based on the Biblical narrative of the Judaeo-Christian tradition.
3. separate religion from state!
nadav ,   israel   (07.03.12)
Save our country the head and hundreds of billions of Shekels wasted on a fanatic religious sector that does not respect the State, its laws or other citizens! Religion, which is corrupt because of its absolutist nature, should NOT be part of the government or budget! One's beliefs should not be dictated or enforced by the State- how is this not obvious?!

As an Israeli you are no doubt aware that the Haredim do not get involoved with the official Chief Rabbinate. Haredim have always had their own Rabbonim, like the Chazon Ish,the Steipler Gaon, Shlomo Zalman Auerbach, Yosef Shalom Elyashiv, etc. The established local rabbis are part of the mainstream Chief Rabbinate. Religion is part of society, just as American presidential candidates outdo each other in showing how deeply Christian they are. That's how Obama's Rev Wright got into the spotlight.
