1. Bloodshed, incest and paganism?
R Narz ,   Toronto   (06.25.12)
Will there be bloodshed? How can there not be? A certain small proportion of those who serve will be killed or wounded. Incest? Well now, that's an interesting thought, everyone knows that the IDF is a hotbed of sexual awakening, how would it not be with young people? Still, I have followed the news for many years and not yet seen the charge of incest levied against the IDF. So perhaps the incest would be - gasp - committed by - gasp - Haredim? And paganism? LOL.
2. Study after Service
yaakov ,   TA   (06.25.12)
Other young people have to do this so it should apply across the board---how selfish are these ultra- Orthodox to take state subsidies for young healthy men and have the burden placed on everyone else. The universale draft is long overdue--no Jew is more speical than another..
3. Mr Yishai what about medical students?
Haim ,   TA   (06.25.12)
Why is their blood less precious? At least they will go on to be productive members of society save lives and so on. They serve in the IDF , they give the best years of their lives while these so called yeshiva students sit on their holly backsides sponging off tax payers money. The harideem have gotten away with it to long and the time has come to end their so called life style at the exspense of the rest of the poplation. Studying Torah is not a profession.
4. Will the outcome be better than Tal law?
Ilan   (06.25.12)
The Tal law was compromise that had only modest gains. The results of the Pleisner committee looks to be a step backwards. While the concept of tying service to stipends and other benefits is initially attractive the High Court has in the past has ruled it illegal in regards to the Arab sector. The other problem is that the set of incentives and penalties differ according by sector. Will there be one set for Arabs another for Haradim and another for Women? It is an odd approach that on the face of it seems discriminatory.
5. ¿Incest?
Robert ,   Israel   (06.25.12)
If Minister Shai considers drafting as incest, how should he call abusing of all the youngsters that go to the army during three full years risking their lives while all those "Yeshivah bojer" learn, pray, spend the nights comfortably with their beloved ones, get married and have children.¿Isn't that real abuse? Ahh, I almost forgot to ask: How does Minister Shai call those "Yeshivah bojer" that sing and make noise on purpose inside their Yeshivot, incited by their own teachers, while the sirens are sounding on Yom Hashoah and Yom Hazikaron? How can we, Israelis, call people of that kind?
6. I wish there were a law, which would force
leo ,   usa   (06.25.12)
hardcore lefty and hardcore righty into marriage. Children would've been normal people.
7. No Tickee - No Shirtee
Dan ,   Florida - Tel Aviv   (06.25.12)
If the Ultra Orthodox do not want to serve I say OK by me but they forfeit any State subsidy. Now they need to work to support themselves. By the way, isn't that what the Torah says we must do?
8. utter ignorance
Pinny ,   Bat Yam   (06.25.12)
Gilui Arayot is not incest, where do you get your illiterate writers from? They do not even know basic English Gilui Arayot is IMMORALITY You just lost all credibility. Go hire some literate intelligent writers
9. Torah Study Does Not Exempt
Ari ,   Beit Shemesh   (06.25.12)
According to the Torah, of the different things that exempts someone from serving in the army, learning torah isnt one of them. Suprise, surprise!
10. #7 Haredim are serving more than secular
(06.25.12)
If not for haredim all of Israel would be one peace of Gaza. It's only thanks to the Torah and prayers to G-d that Israel is basically safe from our enemies. Secualar who have a hard time praying and learning all day should be the one defending with weapons.
11. Divide and conquer
Big bad Jew ,   United States   (06.25.12)
one group claims to be 'righteous' and exempt from the same service that the others pay for. Somehow, these 'ultra religious' find the most incredible compromises to justify their own theft of others people lives and money. As a democracy, Israel, like America as well as other democracies, finds itself re-examing the older laws(?) that also justified legally, that no blacks unless they owned property could vote, and no woman could vote until the 1920's. Other than the Ten Commandments, nothing is written in stone that can't be improved by time and history. Time the "Ultra religious' live under the same laws as the rest of us and stop requiring the forcing of others to be their sponsors. "He who wont work wont eat."
12. # 10 ah, come on
Big bad Jew ,   United States   (06.25.12)
So are you reinterpreting G-ds promise to israel and adding that somehow, magically, G-d also excused these self made law makers to only exempt themselves from serving in the IDF? Where is that written? Absolute power corrupts absolutely. The Vatican, these Haredim, ( many others, Ambassadors, etc.) make extraordinary laws that keep them safe from prosecution. unto a point and then, all hell breaks loose. Don't defend those who refuse to be a real part of Israel, these people, like leeches, live off the blood of those whose backs they ride, for free. They have had their time now, it's up to others to have theirs. p.s. all the ancient Jewish men of renown of ours were fighters.... not welfare bums in the name of 'religion. take King David for example who prayed night and day and fought like a one man army from hell.....
13. living on somebody else expense is what?
Ze'ev ,   Nbg, germany   (06.25.12)
Not a sin? Get a JOB! Go and SERVE!
14. to #10 The "prayers" and studying of the
jason white ,   afula,israel   (06.25.12)
does not defend Israel! They can take their prayers and studying and do them outside of our Jewish country. If it was not for Jews, moslems, druze and christians defending Israel, there would be no Israel for the hara-dim to to live as parasites.
15. Korach
jay abouaf ,   Jaffa, Israel   (06.25.12)
Eli Yishai is Korach
16. MK Yishai should return to studies
Dan ,   Kefar Saba   (06.25.12)
I don't understand why a person would give up studies and become a member of the Knesset.
17. Army Service for Hassidim
deno ,   nahariya israel   (06.25.12)
If Moses was alive today he would be ashamed at the behaviour of the hasidiim. They bear no relationship to the Levi's from the bible. They where the true defenders of Israel and Judaism
18. The compromise to come-a prediction
Avramele   (06.25.12)
We will return to a situation where yeshivot will have a quota on full time students and on those who will serve. In their corrupt fashion they will send the poor the unconnected and those without yichus. This is how the corrupt rabbis and shtetl leaders handled the czarist draft in the 19th century. In this case of course the new draftees can be considered the lucky ones - liberated from the ugliness of yeshiva life and given an opportunity to be true Israelis without compromising their halachi lifestyle.
19. 'Three acts expressly forbidden by Judaism. ?!?!?!?!?
Talula ,   Israel   (06.25.12)
Ha ha ha ha ha - selective understanding of Judaism here. What about all those sick bastard yeshiva students and rabbis who sexually abuse children, murder gay men, beat their wives, steal, lie, cheat and bribe and end up in prison? Does Judaism allow that? Not as far as I am aware. Send the lot of the unsavoury lazy bastards into the army - ENOUGH ALREADY!!!!!!
20. Bad Translation
Orly ,   Jerusalem, Israel   (06.25.12)
While commonly used to describe incest, the term Yishai used is a term for all criminal sex acts of a certain degree (spiritual exicision) and higher (death by heavenly court, possible death in at the hands of a court of 23 judges in the time when the death sentence is active). This can be anything from one's own wife who menstrated and did not go to mikveh to adultery with a married woman. His point is that it will, in its current form, push the young men into sexual impropriety of epic proportions.
21. Is this an example of Moral Equivalence?
Tim ,   Brighton   (06.25.12)
Incest=Haredi National Service
22. "Incest &idolatory" ??? Meshuganner !!!
PETER SM ,   JERUSALEM ISRAEL   (06.25.12)
23. #14
mika ,   Israel   (06.25.12)
Well said! The minute you have a teudat zehut, you hold a responsibility to serve like anyone else. Some black-hatter sitting around praying won't save me from being killed and takes away money from my (pathetically low military) salary and my (crappy military) equipment. Giyus for all or country for none!
24. All the great sages in history also had a profession
Carl ,   USA   (06.25.12)
Making a living always went hand-in-hand with study of Torah. Curious how the haredim might find the ability to study under Hamas rule if there are insuffient defenders of their yeshivot...
26. 50% Tel Aviv don't serve
dave ,   safet   (06.25.12)
and not a word about them. what a joke. but hey, lets have the COS a charaidi who would nuke Germany
27. Self-appointed judges do not have the power
Allan ,   PT   (06.25.12)
Self-appointed judges do not have the power to overrule the ruling of Rabbis. These self-appointed judges were not elected by the public (democracy LOL) and neither are they wanted by the majority. The Rabbis who are revered and admired by ALL haredim have the final say. And they say "NO!" Haredim will NEVER join this army! UNLESS it becomes 100% according to Torah: Shabbat will be observed properly; kashrut will be observed properly; there will be no women on the premises; and all the halachot by each and every soldier will be observed properly. Otherwise, forget about haredim joining EVER.
28. R Ovadia Yoseph has yet to be heard !
moshe ,   Tivon, Israel   (06.25.12)
I fervantly hope MK Yishai has wrongly anticipated Rabbi Ovadia Yoseph's decision. I can't believe that the learned Rabbi would use language like "incest, idoltry" of the unschooled MK Tishai. Surely the BEST scholars in the Yeshivot can continue there studies The other 49,000 ( 50,000 - 1,000) must defend their country , their women and children. moshe
29. @ # 25
M. Davison ,   Ra'anana, Israel   (06.25.12)
If that's the case, then why should they suffer by living here at all? Let these fanatics go back to Poland, Williamsburg or wherever else they came from and live out their lives there.
30. yishai wake up
milson   (06.25.12)
studying torah did a lot of good for 6 million jews you olmert jackass. If the 6 million all had guns and had martial arts training, more jews would have survived and more nazis would have been killed. haredi can study after hours. all of them have to learn self defense and contribute to the state. In the meantime, yishai should be kicked out for the carmel.trying is not good enough.
