1. This is a Jewish state. ALL men should serve 2 years in.....
Street goes BOTH way ,   Jerusalem   (06.27.12)
the army AND 2 years in YESHIVA or other religious institution. How can we call Israel a Jewish state when most (seculars) know NOTHING about Torah?!!!
2. 20% = "prodigies"? Pretty generous.
Susan ,   Israel   (06.27.12)
That's a very generous definition of "prodigy". The Plessner committee has been very generous indeed. To bad their generosity is only met with vitriol.
3. Tanks in Bnei Brak ?
Raptor   (06.27.12)
Wrong. It should be bulldozers.
4. Alternative to Tal Law
Sagi   (06.27.12)
There is only one possible alternative. Universal conscription. Anything less is whitewash. It will also turn wimps into men. Useless wimps into fruitful men.
5. equality
Mordechai ,   Beit Shemesh   (06.27.12)
The usual threats from the people who live off the State, in other words our taxes - something they don't pay, go to Meir Sharim and see how many of the stores don't pay VAT as it they are allowed to pocket the money instead of paying it to the State. If Beni Brak is attacked by a foreign army see how many soldiers will standby and let the Haridim defend themselves! Army or National service must be compulsory for ALL, no exceptions. The best answer is to bring in a law to close all these completely unnecessary religious study centres. All that they are trying to do, as King Canute tried to stop the waves, so the religious are trying to stop the reality of religion being irrelevant as secularism sweeps the world as we learn to understand that humans are animals as are all the other species that inhabit the world.
6. Equality
David ,   Israel   (06.27.12)
Equality means that the jeshiva boys go also to the army and the non jeshiva boys go also to the jeshiva. But why always to force people? Let's not force people to be drafted for the army. There is no need for that, the politicians run behind an illusion, just check the files who is really enlisting and you will be surprised.
7. @ no.1
Aharon ,   Holon, Israel   (06.27.12)
Uh, no it doesn't go both ways. One has a duty to the State, not necessarily religion/faith. Faith is and should be a private matter.
8. Why loose 2 years on UNNECESSARY studies ?
Charles ,   Petach Tikva   (06.27.12)
9. Solution
Linda ,   Jerusalem   (06.27.12)
Transfer them all to Judea and Samaria and then give the land to the Palestinians to form their state. Solve two problems at the same time.
10. Hashem soldiers
Moshe ,   Stamford Hill   (06.27.12)
These yiddins are hashems soldiers of battle against idolatory and false prophets. All true torah fearing jews should not allow these yiddins with true derech to serve. They serve only hashem.
11. To 1. Acceptable now send all haredim to army
Reuben ,   Tel Aviv   (06.27.12)
You suggestion is acceptable, now send all haredim boys & girls to compulsory army service. And send all freemongers to jobs, let them earn for their living. If in all their years they haven't learnt this in Torah then God only knows what they have been studying. If anyone says there are no jobs, there are plenty of jobs in agriculture, construction, health services etc. Read the torah for once, no job is small. It is the duty & responsibility of a man to earn livelihood for his family and to keep them happy.
12. I live in Montreal among the so called religious
Al   (06.27.12)
orthoquack. Some of them are nice, some so so. In general they are like everyone else out there. I notice very few of their men getting uo early and heading to a job. I get up early go to work and still pay taxes like a tate. There is precious little I can learn from them. No small wonder most of their male kids end up doing very little in life. They never saw a father busting his ass for his family.
13. One solution
Chaim ,   Israel   (06.27.12)
The IDF must be 100% according to Jewish Law, Torah Law. Otherwise there's nothing to talk about.
14. #1 "a Jewish state" is exactly that "a JEWISH state"
Chaim ,   Israel   (06.27.12)
run according to Torah and not according to Western non-Jewish countries. Then there will be something to discuss.
15. # 10 Stamford Hill
Sagi   (06.27.12)
A bastion of idol worshippers and wimps living in a ghetto, totally disconnected from all reality. Useless beings with nothing in life except fantasy and fairy tales.
16. # 13 and 14 Chaim
Sagi   (06.27.12)
Yes you are correct and it will happen one day unfortunately. Israel will be a country in which the majority of the citizens will have beards and sidelocks and wear long black coats and funny hats. This will happen for two reasons. You will proliferate while the seculars will leave. This is like the candle being burnt at both ends until the middle is reached and there is no candle left to burn. Likewise there will be no Israel left to exist. Your demagoguery and your "god" shall prevail. It is very sad and I shall not be here to witness it.
17. Sagi #16 Secular won't leave
(06.27.12)
There will just be more baalei tshuva like there are baruch Hashem today.
18. No #14, you do not have a monopoly of what Judaism is
Avi   (06.27.12)
We are not only the majority but the economy lies 99% on us. You are fed by us, you are given a house by us. Know your duties to the state that feeds you.
19. One question:
Keren ,   IL-BR   (06.27.12)
Where is that written in Torah that yeshiva guys must keep all day "studying"at the expenses of other guys who go to the army to protect the country. Their women could have babies( if that's the problem) and take care of them while men go to army. If they defend Torah in govern, they must explain what is their base to such injustice. If they reach to make sense, they could be perhaps understood. If they don't,I don't see reasons for them to receive help from the govern. They can go and live like Hamish ,all of them together ,in an specific town(not spread all over Israel),without govern interference nor help. Now,that's fair. If they want to segregate themselves from other Jews, well ,they must live segregated then. I am sorry to speak in this way,but what is fair,is fair. Everybody can study Torah and work and do army all at one time.
20. #13 Chaim
Keren ,   IL-BR   (06.27.12)
I hope the food in army is kosher;I hope there is a sinagogue ;and I hope men and women are provided of Torah classes . The intensity and interest of each individual gets things depends on each individual, but I agree that the base of the army must be Jewish,at least in the basics. Haredim should adapt and in their houses they can do all betterly, as they please.
21. Erez Yisrael belongs to the Religious
Sane ,   Manchester England   (06.27.12)
Because quite frankly, if not for the religious grandparents of the secular they would all be Christians. Furthermore, the legitimate claim to the land is mainly dependent on the Torah. Furthermore, the religious were in the land long before Zionism was invented, and you have no right to tell them what to do, however many there are of you. Remember, if you go on majorities a majority of the world thinks Israel should not exist.
22. #16
Sane ,   Manchester England   (06.27.12)
No a hater like you will live to see those you hate thrive.
23. # 22 Sane ?
Sagi   (06.27.12)
You and your ilk already thrive and I see it all day and every day. You thrive on welfare and handouts, you thrive on the blood of my comrades that I dug holes in the ground for.
24. Ba'ale tshuva ?
Charles ,   Petach Tikva   (06.27.12)
Someone , a charidi , said that sane people can't be brainwashed into religion .
25. Sane ??? manchester
Charles ,   Petach Tikva   (06.27.12)
The tora is ONLY a history book that tells the history of the Jewish people . The religious were here before we came , yes , but what did they contribute to the State they milk today ? what did they contribute to de defense of the State where they can enjoy security ? What do they contribute today ? They only abuse the State to receive money , to get paid for their unnecessary so called "studies" . No right to tell them what to do ? and what right do you have ? You don't even live here !
26. Netanyahu "The Magician"
Michael ,   Haifa   (06.28.12)
Rest assured that Netanyahu will find a solution that will not change anything.
