61. That's what boot camp is for
John Nagle ,   Silicon Valley, CA   (06.27.12)
What's the problem? You have cops find the draft resisters and drag them to boot camp. You give them a haircut and a shave, and turn them over to a drill sargent. After a few weeks of marching, push-ups, running, and being yelled at, they'll start to turn into soldiers. Some will be kicked out, some will be recycled back to the beginning of boot camp, a few will be sent off to the camp stockade for punishment, and most will come out as basically competent soldiers. The IAF knows how to do this. Nobody likes boot camp, but it won't kill you.
62. Idf and haredi
Floriane ,   Israel   (06.27.12)
#49 is right this article should not have been published! It is a disgusting offense to Israel!
63. The Charedi Anarchists Are a Danger
Noah Lev ,   LosAngelesUSA   (06.27.12)
israel has been shoveling its many problems under the rug for generations., including the Charedi. It wanted it both ways: increased birthrates, residing in parts of Israel at times unsafe, a continued Orthodox Jewish frame of reference, and of course a safe haven for Jews still under the yoke of anti-Semitism in other countries, or perceived. Norway bans a Jewish ritual...Germany is beginning to do the same. In the USA, propositons are taken off the ballot in Santa Monica and San Franisco, thanks to our religious laws and pressure groups. 50,000 professional Torah students..is non-sensical..and 1m souls who adamently believe they are saving Israel from itself by refusing to integrate (work, serve in the army, national service, accept gladly charity from Israel and abroad. As a matter of fact, I know a few Orthodox in the States who decry most everyhing Israeli except other Orthdox and feel no responsibility at all...as in the US with its 12m illegals..its easier to look away from the problem than resolve it. Arizona activists now bemoan the fact that police can ask for papers, proving citizenship, as still profiling, as if Hispanics all look the same (they dont). Some of indian features, some of Spanish. Get it. And there are others here illegally, from the M.E., etc. Forcing hundreds of thousands to enlist, be drafted or serve somewho is unrealistic. I agree. But, anarchy threatened by the rabbis is unacceptable. They should be arrested for sedition. The draft can be accomplished, but in stages. Each Charedi youth will have to be interviewed..just as the Africans are being questioned as to motive. Israel does not need this problem. It needs more patriots. The Charedi threats are extortion pure and simple. But so are the cottage cheese protests. Arabs have their Nakba Day..etc. Jews have other grievances, which taken to the streets are weakening the Jewish state.while the Muslim world is laughing and watching and arming. In the end, the 3rd Kingdom may fall, and no one will save it or have much pity for "stiff necked Jews" To the Charedi, Torah study is not enough. Learn to love and protect your country...all your necks are in a noose.
64. Haridim
Mordechai ,   Beit Shemesh   (06.27.12)
Really the only person who we can blame is the Prime Minister. Since Kadima joined he has not done what he should have, got rid of Gafni and his cohorts. Even if necessary Shas. The finance committee is chaired by one whose only interest is to get as much money for the haridim as he can. Similarly Shas is only in the government so that they can soak us. Eshai hasn't the decency to resign after the report of Carmel fire, the only thing that is important to him is how can he bleed us more. It is time we stood up and said enough is enough, we the people need to decide where our taxes go. Anyone who gets rid of the haridim from the government and the Knesset committees has my vote and i believe of most of the citizens of Israel. BTW how many of the so called students in the Yeshivot are actually Israelis? Many are foreigners on temporary residents visas yet get social and health services as if they are Israelis SEND THEM HOME!!!
65. Chaya Charedi you are right! VERY FISHY ARTIC.LE
m   (06.28.12)
It amazes me how anyone can eat the words of YNET without being suspicious in the least!! This writer first writes from a charedi point of view of studying Tora and its importance then he moves the charedim to the university to become lawyers and doctors.
66. Haredi scientists?
JDE ,   Boston, USA   (06.28.12)
"Teach them English, statistics, computer applications, research methods, social sciences and exact sciences. Encourage young haredim to turn to academia... Try to produce haredi scientists, doctors, physicists, psychologists and economists.". Seriously? Is he actually so deluded as to think they want that? I hope this ends in civil upheaval; I really do. I want a publicly proclaimed schism, and an end to their free ride. Of course, the Modern Orthodox will then have to decide which side of the fence they're going to come down upon. Good; I've had it up to here with their waffling and indecision. It's become a way of life for them, as gaming the system has become a way of life for the black hats. And I love this "Dear seculars" bullsh*t. My God, the condescension just drips from his keyboard - and I'm sure he's utterly clueless. They're taught from birth to think of us as slow, wayward children. I cannot WAIT to see their society come crumbling down around them.
67. Wow
Jim ,   Seattle, WA USA.   (06.28.12)
So, the "chosen" people have an even more "chosen" class of people... That's why!
68. To #44
TSB ,   Clifton, NJ   (06.28.12)
You inadvertently hit the nail on the head. What you want is to destory Charedi (read God Fearing) society. That's the real reason Charedim will refuse to serve -- because the IDF is dedicated to destroying their way of life, which we believe is God given.
69. MR Eliezer Hayon is very naive,
J.K. ,   Brooklyn USA   (06.28.12)
he advises, instead of drafting them, teach them english, statsitics, computer applications, research methods, social sciences and exact sciences, the religious politicians and the haredi rabbis are more afraid of the above recomandations, than to let their young serve in the IDF,powerty and backwardness will keep the herd in line, and the leaders in power, the only way to bring in 500,000 haredim into Israeli society,is to cut off the umbelical cord, stop feeding them, you'll see how quick they'l take any job,and start studying secular subjects, without any legislation.
70. Well, at least Pelsner will cut you off of welfare
Yaron ,   Jerusalem   (07.01.12)
Even if you won't serve in the army, I won't have to pay for it anymore
71. Reply to number 30
Joe ,   Baltimore, USA   (07.01.12)
You may have misunderstood -- or been taught by a teacher who misunderstood. A bride or any other women does not normally bear arms. This is a Torah prohibition based on 'a woman shall nopt wear what pertains to a man' etc. Serving in the IDF as such does not involve milchemes mitzvah for a woman, whether or not she is under the chuppa. Israel exists for the sake of the Torah. That is why it is called a Jewish state, whose right to exist is based on Torah. Those who learn Torah full time also protect the Land of Israel. You no doubt recall that even at the height of Vietnam all American seminary students received an automatic '4D' draft exemption.
72. Reply to 66, crumbling down around them?
Joe ,   Baltimore, USA   (07.01.12)
Given the intermarriage and assimilation rate in the USA you are more likely to see the world of Conservative/Reform crumbling down around you. In Israel, as in London and NYC, the future is heavily Haredi. The good news for you is that in London and NYC many Haredim follow the Frankfurt model and have outstanding secular education, judging by national examinations, combined with uncompromising Jewish observance. The lifelong kollel model is mainly Lithuanian [like me] but many Hasidic groups encourage young men to learn a trade to support their families. Even some top Lithuanian yeshivahs arrange for students to attend university in the evenings. We're not monolithic and the model you attack is not the only Haredi model.
