1. The three great ones
Jerry Diamond ,   Highland Beach Fl.   (07.01.12)
Shamir, Begin, and Ben Gurion the three greatest leaders of Israel May their names be a blessing for all that knew them and loved them RIP
2. Shamir is very vividly in my memory..
ORA ,   JERUSALEM   (07.01.12)
as the Lilliputian Israeli minister looking up at the colossal gigantic American ambassador Baker, saying a resolute NO to all his proposals, Shamir was a real leader ,a man of vision.
3. His legacy
israel israeli ,   tel aviv   (07.01.12)
Shamir's greatest deed was not leadership during Saddam's bombardment of Israel, it was the Madrid conference. In Madrid, Shamir negotiated with the Arabs of Judea and Samaria, without the foreign Arabs who demand the right to immigrate to Israel. If Shamir had finished his work, we would have peace today, and thousands of lives would have been saved. Instead, Shamir lost the elections and the extreme Left imported the pig Arafat to Israel.
4. What legacy?

The man was a war criminal...

people. One of the very few.
7. #1: Shamir will be remembered for a number of things
David ,   Karmiel, Israel   (07.01.12)
However, the most important of all, whether you approved of his policies or not, his word was his word. There was no "ZigZag" and his word was his word! Sitting in Highland Beach, Florida, you have no idea of what the people of Israel went through withe the missiles failing on Tel Aviv and Haifa and how our morale was undermined by a government of do nothings because that was what Bush and Baker wanted to save their coalition with the Arabs. Yes, they weakened Saddam, Bush the Second brought him down and directly strengthened Iran! Jerry Diamond, you left out Yitzchak Rabin and before you scream"but Olso was a disaster" never forget that Begin gave in to Carter and Sadat over the Sinai and Gaza which has caused Israel more damage that Oslo ever did! As for Ben Gurion, at the time the "Old Man" was certainly a great Israeli but he was naive and left this country without a constitution, a decent electoral system and a policy of socialism that ruined Israeli economically. At least our former leaders were doing what they deemed best for the country and not for themselves!
8. The ONLY Likud prime minister who didn't
Patriotic Israeli ,   Tel Aviv, Israel   (07.01.12)
give away pieces of our Holy Land to the enemy which the Torah (Bible) explicitly and in definite terms FORBIDS!!!
9. Rest easily Shamir you Served your country well.

Sarah B ,   U.S.A. / Israel   (07.01.12)
Ah. Your predictable idiocy on complete display. Then again, you believe that Yasir Arafat -- may his name be cursed throughout eternity -- was a great "freedom fighter." Shows what you know. Which is to say, absolutely nothing. Better shut up before you make an even greater fool of yourself. You're quite good at that.
11. To: David at No. 7
Sarah B ,   U.S.A. / Israel   (07.01.12)
Please do not forget that culling Egypt out of the Arab herd was a very great thing, even though it cost Begin blood to do it. I do believe that Shamir, however, should have told the United States to get lost when they applied pressure to Shamir when Iraqi SCUDs started to fall in Israel. A matter of degree and method. Shamir should have reminded Bush that Iraq was not a nuclear power and had Israel to thank for that. That was Shamir's biggest mistake. Then, Israel should have reduced Iraq to dust, turned to the "Coalition" and said -- "Now you owe us even more." It probably would have saved the world a second Iraq war and the complete and total mess that Iraq is today.
12. #7 Rabin
(07.01.12)
Only two acts summarize the entire Rabin legacy: buying Shas to support Oslo I and bribing Goldfarb to support Oslo II. With these two acts, Rabin destroyed Israeli democracy and planted the seeds for civil war.
13. Yitzhak Shamir's legacy
joe ,   uk   (07.01.12)
when he was asked to give part of israel he said there is nothing to give what is there to give israel is a small tie shape on the map
14. Another significant "achievement"...
Jew with Cojones ,   Israel   (07.01.12)
which occurred during Prime Minister Mr. Shamir's term due to his decision to order the targeted killing of Hezbollah Secretary General Masawi in Lebanon (07.02.1992), was that the State of Israel suffered its worst ever terrorist attack against an Israeli Diplomatic Installation. The car bombing terrorist attack against the Israeli Embassy in Buenos Aires, Argentina on 17 March 1992. What is most interesting is that this particular attack took place AFTER the beginning of the Madrid Process but BEFORE the beginning of the Oslo Process...and as such the Israeli Right refuses to include it in ANY list as the true beginning of terrorist attacks as a result of the peace process. I suppose that is because it just doesn’t fit in with their rhetoric. Nonetheless this is another one of Prime Minister Mr. Shamir's significant "achievements"
15. He was a useful man to have, but not a diplomat.
Scott ,   USA   (07.01.12)
16. #5,Scott ..More diplomatic than you think
Ian ,   Newcastle upon Tyne   (07.01.12)
It's widely reported that when President Bush senior tried to pressure Mr Shamir into making concessions that he refused to make,he told Bush exactly what he could kiss. Diplomatically,he told Bush in Yiddish. He's not only missed now,but his type has been missed for many years. THREE CHEERS FOR ISRAEL!!!
17. Shamir had the guts to say "NO". Bibi does not.
Chaim ,   Israel   (07.01.12)
Agreeing to participate in the Madrid Conference was a colossal mistake, which gave undeserved life to the dangerous, fraudulent "peace process with Palestinians", which causes Israel so much needless suffering. However, on balance, Shamir was far truer to Likud, Likud's Constitution and Israel, as a whole, than Bibi. For the most part, Shamir had the guts to say "NO" to demands which endangered Israel. Bibi does not.
