1. Exactly what is the objection?
Tim ,   Brighton   (07.16.12)
Is it a cant or wont?
2. The Way Forward
Adam Neira ,   Paris, France   (07.16.12)
There is a peaceful way forward on this issue. The camp must not split into groups who at best will not speak with each other and at worst who will be at each others throats. This is the time for Jewish unity. Prayers for the Holy Land. P.S. Good work by the Ynet producers for broadcating this demonstration live.
3. FIRST & FOREMOST, END THEIR SUBSIDIES
Rafi ,   US   (07.16.12)
.... that will then compel the Heredi to actually learn something relevant for working in the 21st century. Once they work, you can collect some meaningful taxes from them. Only then, can you look into a possible draft - and the "invaluable" skills that the heredi would bring to the IDF... At a minimum the heredi should absolutely be required to do national service in hospitals, etc. Note that no one is suggesting that they drop their religious or Torah studies altogether. But no matter WHAT country they reside in, the Heredi must contribute their minimal fair share: work, taxes, and - where situation requires (like Israel) - national service. The key of course is reaching the Heredi leadership - the masses follow them like lemmings. If the Rebbe says "join the tank corps!", the rank & file would all line up.
4. Take that welfare teat out of their mouths and let them
Al   (07.16.12)
chock. My Canadian born kids who are religious are in the IDF protecting these fruitcakes. Either they help protect the country or they may as well starve. I simply couldnt care less as to their welfare. They are not Jews. They are menuvals.
5. Start eating your spinach boys...
Jessica ,   Tel Aviv   (07.16.12)
you're up!
6. Shameful
Michael ,   Jerusalem   (07.16.12)
This is a shameful exploitation of children for political gains.
7. The Redemption - LIVE...
Adam Neira ,   Paris, France   (07.16.12)
Ynet's live coverage of this issue is the best at the moment. Mea Shearim is full of life and dynamism today. Things should remain peaceful, bizrat hashem. Foreign media may have a field day with the kids in handcuffs pictures, but this indeed may be the intention of the protest leaders. The mixed messages are going to confuse many viewers. The issues involved are complex and multi-layered but there is a way forward on this issue. I repeat... The camp should not split into groups of people who at best won't speak to each other and at worst who are at each other's throats. Unity is required. Some Rabbis need to sit down with certain people for a little chat. Confusion often precedes understanding. Prayers for the Holy Land.
8. 1 Tim, Brighton: The Haredim don't want to interact with wo

women in the IDF since that would be corrupting for their morals and beliefs because they want to maintain a separation except for a few instances.
9. This sect refuses to take money from the government.
ES ,   Bet Shemesh   (07.16.12)
10. Demonstration
Enoch ,   Toronto   (07.16.12)
They took off time from studying the Torah? What is the world coming to. By the way, would participation in a demonstration lead to dancing??..
11. #3 Rafi, Agree in full. Plus separation of religion & state.
Michael ,   California, USA   (07.16.12)
That's the only way to avoid a civil war in Israel. I will gladly unpack my kit-bag.
12. I don't get it
Matt ,   Brooklyn   (07.16.12)
I can understand opposition to the entire concept of a draft, and argue for a volunteer army. But to oppose a draft for ME, while everyone else is eligible just blows my mind. What is the basis of the argument? is protecting your people a sin? Not that any of it is surprising. If you consider the basic education that children globally receive is "devoid of any content", you are coming from a very very narrow wealth of knowledge.
13. most haredi are not like this
zionist forever   (07.16.12)
There are some more radical haredi sects and individuals ( the people who spit at women etc ) the vast majority of haredi though whilst they might dress the same and believe in the same God are just ordinary law abiding individuals. I am sure that given the choice the majority would rather not go in the army even amongst the reasonable ones but why should they want to serve if they have a choice. I know if I was haredi and was given an option then I would rather not serve and instead study in yeshiva. Force them by law though and the majority will agree to serve without putting up a fight its just the radicals who give the all a bad name. This is also why we need some kind of compromise solution to the haredi like letting them go into the army when they are in their 20s rather than teens allow them to get in some yeshiva time before they get drafted. Let haredi study 18-21 go into the army for 3 years. Seculars go into the army at 18-21 and then go to university etc so no big del. We also need a slow phased draft for the sake of the army which is not ready to take in thousands of haredi overnight and for the sake of the haredi community give them time to get used to the idea of army service. Lets not rush this because the secular elite want the haredi to serve not because it will achieve anything but just because of fairness. If we don't get it right first time we will have a situtaion that doesn't work and a future government will have to go through all this again to rectify a bad bill that Bibi was forced to rush through to save his coalition.
14. Mom of a Nachal Hareidi Commando Soldier
Riva ,   Betar Ilite   (07.16.12)
Bottom line, there are DIFFERENT kinds of Hareid. I HUMBLY REQUEST OF ALL YNET READERS TO PLEASE REFRAIN FROM THE CONSTANT BASHING COMMENTS AGAINST HAREIDIM BECAUSE MANY OF US ARE REALLY WONDERFUL PEOPLE WHO SACRIFICE A LOT JUST TO LIVE IN ISRAEL! Many of us care deeply about the defense of Israel, like me! The established IDF Nachal Hareidi is a booming success with guys successfully carrying out some of the most dangerous missions!! (my son was involved with this many times). Nachal Hareidi IS PACKED! Religious men are easier to handle as well because they are brought up with discipline and not allowed to run wild. therefore, the success rate of dealing with this is the highest in the army! Nachal Hareid, which I can personally attest, is filled with ALL KINDS OF HAREIDIM and non Hareidim religious men, including chassidim and yishivish guys-learning guys. so, those who want to serve, SERVE but the fact this that those who don't want to serve end up being an enormous drain on the IDF. they are NOT PREPARED TO ABSORB ALL THESE GUYS WITH SPECIAL NEEDS! iT'S GOING TO BE A TOTAL DIASTER. most normal Hareidim will do their duty and just serve if called up. BUT there are some (and i point out, a few )extreme splinter groups who will make trouble. The IDF just doesn't need this!
15. No service
Mickey ,   Kochav Ya'ir, Israel   (07.16.12)
No service, no benefits, period. Problem solved. No one should be forced to serve but there are consequences to non-compliance. No Yeshiva money. No college money. No welfare. No nothing.
16. 14
zionist forever   (07.16.12)
The problem with Haredi is pretty much they all dress the same in what secular people think is a backward way of dress and they are all religious and don't live a secular lifestyle. You get the more radical haredi and the secular community see them all as women haters, draft dodgers etc so they hate them for it. The seculars also see themselves as the enlightened ones because they don't live this backward lifestyle but fact is they can be just as bad but because there are more of them and everybody hates haredi a blind eye is turned to the radical seculars so they come out of it all looking like law abiding citizens and haredi looking like backwards radical traitors Both sides have their radicals
17. This looks like a bunch of children.
Susan ,   Kfar Saba   (07.16.12)
I think it is illegal to take kids out of school and bring them to a demonstration. Why dont they bring some real men? I think a lot of haredi guys would like the army. Young men, 18-20 years of like the physical activity. They might be glad to get out of sitting in the beit midrash for long hours.
18. Edat Haredit is an extremist ultra-Orthodox sect
A ,   Belgium   (07.16.12)
that does not recognize the State of Israel. Neither does Hamas, Fatah, Syria, etc. They aren't allowed to live in Israel, why should these parasites? And sorry, zionist forever, I cannot agree with your statement, "Seculars go into the army at 18-21 and then go to university etc so no big del." Actually, it is a big deal, because if young Israelis want to find a place in this extremely technological and competitive world, they have to be at the educational starting line along with the Chinese, Indians, Americans, etc. Haredi study for their own selfish, self interest, meaning, following gods word in order to get a free (they take advantage of everything) ride to heaven. They dont have to intellectually compete to earn a living, which is why they can allow themselves to be parasites and live in their ghettos in J'lem and B'nei B'rak and Beit Shemesh. And I have served in the IDF with religious Jews who were so devoted to their country, who so LOVED Eretz Yisrael, they would RIDE IN JEEPS ON PATROL ON SHABBAT. Neetsool nefesh. I dare anyone to tell THESE guys that they are less Jewish than the primitive throwbacks to 17th century Poland. So there is no excuse for Edat Haredi or Neturi Karta or the rest of the leeches, let them hold their breath waiting for the messiah, and preferably NOT in in the country they don't recognize There wont be many left to contend with afterwards.
19. They are locked up by themselves
blacksmith ,   israel   (07.16.12)
They need not handcuffs. They are enchained mentally since many years ago.
20. "Let there be light" on August 1, 2012, draft at 18 for all
COLBERT ,   Treadmill, ISS   (07.16.12)
"In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth. And the earth was without form, and void; and darkness was upon the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God moved upon the face of the waters. And God said, Let there be light: and there was light. And God saw the light, and it was good: and God divided the light from the darkness"
21. #15, IT'S ALREADY THE CASE!
RIVA ,   Betar   (07.16.12)
Don"t worry, no one is funding anyone who sits and learns these days, with rare exception! and there is no college money, no welfare nor any compassion, just a lot of people out there spewing hate behind their backs. This doesn't help society, by the way. it promotes proverty and dependence on the leaders of these splinter groups who are making trouble for the large amount of good and deserving people (whom many people simply don't understand).
22. #3! Make Alliyah and then you'll know the truth!
Ilana ,   Gush Etzion   (07.16.12)
Most hareidi work. a load of them actually serve/served in the IDF as a matter of fact. Did you?
23. HYSTIRICAL BEHAVIOR
DAVID ,   JUDEA   (07.16.12)
Tthe Tal law was a mistake from the beginning. Universal draft should also include leftwing Anarchists, objectors, Haredi and every Israeli citizen. This demonstration is a liitle nuts and over board. It is time for Bibi to step up the board and right a wrong, to live here means we all share the same burdens.
24. God bless you
jay abouaf ,   Jaffa, Israel   (07.16.12)
25. The one and only way forward
Sagi   (07.16.12)
In the army or out of the country. No exemptions and no jail. In or out.
26. #25 Sagi, Yes, jail upkeep is expensive, they r not worthy.
Michael ,   California, USA   (07.16.12)
27. 15 Mickey,we can live,but you ...
ORA ,   JERUSALEM   (07.17.12)
and your friends don t let us....
28. Riva , 14
Charles ,   Petach Tikva   (07.17.12)
Ok , there are fine charidi people , those who serve in the IDF and those who contribute to the Israeli society . That been said , what disgusts me is the ABSENCE of influental religious leaders's public condemnation of those who don't fullfill their obligation , of all those "religious" extremists who commit vil acts [ spitting on a girl , insulting police officers , etc etc ] We want to see a LOUD condemnation of all this by religious leaders , not only in their papers , but also in the general media .
