1. How do we know boat was "mistaken for a threat"?
Raymond in DC ,   Washington, USA   (07.16.12)
This might have been a probing operation, or a test run for an actual attack. We know that Iranian vessels have practiced "swarming" to test US responses. Let this be a warning that one stays clear of US Naval vessels.
2. Don't shoot down another Iranian airliner, 290 killed
COLBERT ,   Treadmill, ISS   (07.16.12)
...the last time that happened. "Iran Air Flight 655 was a civilian jet airliner shot down by U.S. missiles on 3 July 1988 as it flew over the Strait of Hormuz at the end of the Iran–Iraq War. The aircraft, an Airbus A300B2-203 operated by Iran Air, was flying from Bandar Abbas, Iran to Dubai, United Arab Emirates. While flying in Iranian airspace over Iran's territorial waters in the Persian Gulf on its usual flight path, it was destroyed by the United States Navy guided missile cruiser USS Vincennes (CG-49). All 290 onboard including 66 children and 16 crew perished"
3. Caution
Adam Neira ,   Paris, France   (07.16.12)
Cool heads are required right now in the Persian Gulf and especially the Strait of Hormuz. The details of this incident are sketchy, but if a fast moving small boat was headed for a US vessel and had been warned repeatedly then the skipper, even if he was a careless fisherman, had a death wish. Some boundaries must be respected. People should remember... The Strait of Hormuz was created a long time ago. It predates all empires by an eternity. It should be a place where the free flow of people with positive intent is possible.
4. Yip
Mark ,   Namibia   (07.16.12)
The cowboys are murdering the Indians again.
5. Hahaha!!!
Proud American ,   U.S.A   (07.16.12)
Keep on toying with the U.S. Navy Iran, many more "sheet heads" will meet the same end! Where's the persian pussy???
6. To: No. 2
Sarah B ,   U.S.A. / Israel   (07.16.12)
The Iranian aircraft was ordered to identify itself. It failed to do so. Bad idea. But the United States paid millions to the families of those lost aboard the aircraft.
7. #2 - most civilians in Iran don't fly out as much
Eyal ,   USA Israel   (07.16.12)
8. Note the stony silence from Iran
Tim ,   Brighton   (07.16.12)
The tension round the Hormuz is growing Though this incident appears to have been a tragic mistake...the whole of the Southern Coast of the Gulf is on the highest alert waiting for the inevitable...The Iranian Naval Blockade of the Hormuz Over the weeks, the IR of Iran have been open and candid..to expect retaliation in the form of a blockade of the Hormuz against choking sanctions. Many observers dont believe they are joking..nor are these empty threats... Last week a RG military spokesman suggested - whilst eyes and ears are on the Olympics and fighting in Syria escalates further...'like a snake in the night' - thats when Iran will strike and seize what is 'rightfully ours' As reason to disbelieve?
9. Go NAVY!
Jake Stone ,   USA   (07.17.12)
It's a shame that Obamanutless, won't use the devestating firepower, of the U.S. Navy, to help Israel destroy these Muslim animals. If he does help (it isn't for any love for Israel), it'll be for his Saudi buddies' and their political and religious concerns. We should send eight aircraft-battle-carrier-groups to the Persian Gulf and, once-and-for-all, take care of business. God bless the U.S. NAVY and Israel!
10. Iran need only wait for India's reaction
lydia ,   Brisbane   (07.17.12)
India did not take lightly Italian Marines shooting Indian fishermen and is not likely to remain silent over the US doing the same to Indian fishermen. Wait for the shoe to fall
11. This is tragic
Ezra ,   SanDiego USA   (07.17.12)
My consolations go out to the deceased member's family. One would think it's not a good idea to get too close to a war ship. I've been in the gulf on a carrier, and the small boat drivers will cut across your path without batting an eye. I hope this isn't the spark that consumes the gulf in war.
12. So...link to Iran?
Socius ,   Calgary, Canada   (07.17.12)
Am I missing something? I re-read the article and it says the boat is a common fishermans boat but that the IRGC has "similar" boats. Still failing to see a link here. And wouldn't the Iranians have come out bashing the United States for their aggressive cations and etc like they normally do if it were one of their boats? What about checking the communication equipment on the ship and other items to see if it is an Iranian military boat. Lack of all this info makes one skeptical.
13. Would not want to be on the receiving end
Gee ,   Zikron Yaakov   (07.17.12)
As good as the IAF is - a single US Carrier Battlegroup is an incredibly opponent. We could stand up to maybe two of them, but it would not be easy. Iran is over matched by one and there are at least two in the region if not three. Plus there is the USAF and US Army. Iran totally out of their league. The firepower that the US could bring to bear would destroy their fascist regime in a matter of days. I sure hope that Iran continues to be a stupid as they have been, because they will soon be reduced to caveman status.
14. The US navy just killed one Indian fisherman and...
Persian CAT   (07.17.12)
wounded three more. What does that have to do with Iran?!!!
15. #8
israel israeli ,   tel aviv   (07.17.12)
An American attack now would end with a clear Saudi victory and many dead Iranians. The Iranians will do everything to keep the peace until they have nukes. Their current threats are defensive and aimed at Obama. They assume that closing Hormuz in response to an Obama attack will raise oil prices to levels that will end Obama's re-election bid.
16. #9 Jake Stone: be careful..but NOT wrong
moshe ,   Tivon, Israel   (07.17.12)
#9 Jake Stone: I don't think that most Israelis are on the same "wavelength" as you ! Intelligent people realize that for every 1,000 Muslims aid and support militaristic and terror : 1,000,000 Muslims are indifferent and some are against even against terror. It is just W-R-O-N-G to tag every Muslim, every Iranian, with such in-your-face provocations that apparently triggered this US Navy 5th fleet response. moshe
17. The reality of US craft, Persian CAT
Cameron ,   USA   (07.17.12)
A Gulf moment that drives home the fact that our warships will operate off your coastline with absolutely zero tolerance for games & nonsense. Watching & waiting they are.
18. Apologies to Turkey, NOW!!! ( please don't laugh )
Miron ,   USA   (07.17.12)
19. Trigger happy US military....
Robert ,   Australia   (07.17.12)
....what's new? Bullies too, I mean the 5th fleet attacks a fishing boat, how pathetic. However I expect it will bring a few votes for Obama from the more neanderthal US electorate.
20. # 10
Birdi ,   Israel   (07.17.12)
Pray tell what are Indian fishermen doing in a port in DUBAI?? You really have got your wires crossed!
21. U.S. Wins battle Against Fisherman
Hanna ,   Beirut Lebanon   (07.18.12)
Congratulations U.S. You may declare victory in your quick response to the Enemy, the lone Fisherman!! Wow, we are soooo impressed by this latest battle. It will go in History books "the Fisherman Battle".
