1. This is good news!!!!
Keren ,   IL-BR   (07.26.12)
I hope to see all of them enlisted in the Army of Israel, and also all seculars who have been dodging the Service and also the Arabs into National Service. All people living in Israel must be prepared to fight while hoping to never use their skills, but all must be prepared.
2. Good for them they have my respect

I am not a big fan of Haredim. I think that by and large, they have developed a system to suck as much as thay can out the country and the taxpayer as they can , while giving as little as possible back. These young men have shown that there is another kind of Haredi - menschen. They have my respect and good wishes for a safe and successful service. G-d be with you.
5. " If King David had an army why not us?"
Nora Tel Aviv   (07.26.12)
This, coming from a Haredi, should become the motto of Haredi recruits.
6. These are Nahal Haredi boys who have been in army till now

They aren't haredi. They are religious. The yeshiva in Ariel is not a haredi yeshiva. However it is nice to see haredim that believe in not making a chilul Hashem. I wish when I enlisted they offered me to go kravi to Netzach Yehuda, too bad they drafted me after I was married with a kid.
8. #5 King David's army wasn't as G-dless & morally corrupt
The fault secular ,   zionists   (07.26.12)

Was you there?!? King David's troops had A LOT more access to hot shiksas than any average Tel Aviv kid. Then, as now, the hilonim ran the show; the Priests were just circus clowns over at the Big Top, keeping the masses narcotized into paying taxes to the Royal Court. That's the kohans' real job, and it's the only reason King David fed them!!
12. too few
oliver ,   eilat   (07.26.12)
its still to few,of the thousands that live on our cost pretending to study torahand milking the state
13. Times have moved on
Danny ,   London England   (07.26.12)
Young Haredi men should not be sitting in yeshivah because of social pressure. Those who are not suited for years of full-time Torah learning should be in the IDF and also learning a trade. Some things have changed since Ben-Gurion and the Hazon Ish formulated the status quo agreement to protect genuine Torah scholars.
14. Joining IDF is not right for yeshiva students
Talmudic sage ,   TA   (07.26.12)
There is no way for someone to mix Torah studies with the military. It's not right. Ha'Shem tells us that we are to study and pray continuously. Let the seculars join the IDF. We need to do what is righteous.
15. #14 None of our patriarchs or prophets...
Zvi   (07.27.12)
... studied and prayed continuously. They engaged with the world around them. They LIVED torah instead of merely studying it. Their example should motivate you. Judah Maccabee didn't study and pray continuously. He led a military campaign. Nobody in the time of King David and King Solomon studied and prayed continuously, not even the Cohanim. A small minority of Haredi students actually achieve the expertise necessary to become true sages. They can be treated as national treasures and their important work can be funded, just as the best secular researchers in nanotechnology, medicine and space research receive public or private funding, and just as scholarships and fellowships are awarded to the most promising students in scientific areas, this can be done for the most promising Yeshiva students. If someone is a national treasure, then they can still serve in the IDF; maybe part of their role is simply to pray for the safety of their fellow soldiers, day and night, and to study areas of Judaic law that are appropriate to the defense of the homeland. But it's ridiculous to fund even the worst-performing students of an entire sub-culture that contributes nothing back to the society.

Why is there no way for someone to mix Torah studies with the military? I am not saying that you are wrong, because I am in no position to do so, but I would like to get some sense of the reasoning.
17. #11 WTF
shua ,   jerusalem   (07.27.12)
Go read study Shmuel 2, you honestly have no clue of what comes out of your mouth!!!
18. As long as the IDF will not be FULLY SUITABLE for haredim
Abe   (07.27.12)
they may not and will not join. The Rabbis will never allow it. (I'm not referring to Nachal Haredi who have no problem intermingling with secular or with women.)
19. 11 - the only reason King David fed them!!
snag ,   USA   (07.27.12)
Except in your fairy tales there's no other proof that your king David or Salomon ever existed ,...
20. Why is this in the news?
Sharon Israel   (07.28.12)
If people find out about things like this, how will we all hate the haredim?!?! Quick, quick put something up about some sort of parking lot that gets closed on Shabbat!
