31. If America was a true ally
BUTSeriously ,   Sydney   (07.30.12)
She would long ago have dismissed a deathly 3-state called OSLO, and worked to restore the Balfour. Today's conflicts is caused by Britain who created 23 Islamic states, in secret with none voted at the UN, gave all to one Muslim family, no conditions attached. For 30 barrels of oil. Britain was not asked to create only Islamic states - and these actions require re-examination if the conflict is to end.
32. HA'IVRI, IT IS SAID THIS DAY WILL TURN INTO A DAY OF JOY
...DACON9   (07.30.12)
SEE THE GOOD IN IT, you are conditioned like most european JEWS to see sadness. wear white not black see hope not sorrow see the birth not death celebrate because MASHIACH IS SOON
33. crocodile tears
avi ,   nyc   (07.30.12)
I find it amazing that Jews and gentile Obama supporters are making an issue of this. Most of those who are have never observed Tisha B'av or never heard of it before this. Did that complain when Lieberman ate during the 2000 campaign?
34. A blessing
AY ,   LONDON   (07.30.12)
"In Genesis 12:3, G-d promises a blessing to those who bless Israel. For those who don't read the Bible, our track record will have to do." What about those SLA agents in Lebanon who blessed Israel with the betrayal of their country to serve Israeli interests - the blessing was prompt abandonment. Or is the blessing you are talking about Israel's 'gift' to USS Liberty? Or indeed is the blessing the continuous humiliation of Israel's PA collaborators who have dedicated life and soul to Israel's security at the expense of their own people's? (Just like the SLA aforementioned). It seems that Israel has many blessings, but all of the wrong type.
35. Dayenu or no Dayenu?
The Prophetess ,   FL, USA   (07.30.12)
David, is it enough that Obama's opponent visited The Kotel? Is it enough that Obama's opponent declared Jerusalem as the capital of Israel? The only other presidential candidate who had the baytzim to declare Jerusalem the capital of Israel, and who pledged to move the American embassy to Jerusalem, was Gingrich. But he was too "right wing" and was edged out of the running. So we have a more centrist Republican who is also pledging Jerusalem as the capital of Israel, and you are splitting hairs over the date of his visit to Eretz?
36. The REAL insult..
Amichai ,   Huntsville, US   (07.30.12)
The real insult is that Obama used the Kotel & the proclamation of Jerusalem as the capitol of Israel as a publicity stunt for his campaign & then backed away from the statement & hasn't visited Israel again since he got elected. Obama's refusal to meet Bibi in 2010, his backstabbing of Bibi to Sarkozy in 2011, his declaration of support to the "Palestinians", his condemnation of settlements agreed to under Oslo - the list goes on. But yeah, let's bust Mitt's balls for not choosing a better day. Get over it!
37. @24If it was money Arab petro trillions would own the USA
PETER SM ,   MELBOURNE AUSTRALIA   (07.30.12)
USA long ago. After 9/11 the Saudis were told to take their $10 million and ***** **
38. Reality
michael Pielet ,   israel   (07.30.12)
robin f. Your accusations against gov. Romney are not based on fact, just your emotions. What was your response when obama threw the prime minister out of the white house? did you complain. either you are with israel or against. make up your mind based on the facts, not your preconceived emotions. Obama's support of the creation of an arab terrorist state in Judea and Samaria is dangerous to israel. Withdrawal to the 1948 armistice lines is an existential danger to israel. Need i say more. whose side are you on?
39. Mitt: good intentions, fine timing, tremendous confirmation
Paqid Yirmeyahu ,   Ra'anana, Israel   (07.30.12)
of Yerushalayim as our capital. A thousand "attaboys" to you... but will you move the embassy there instead of promise and renege like all of your predecessors?
40. To no1 You dont hear the news.lately or only NBC
(07.30.12)
Obama was backed by the Jewish vote in 88% today the polls say this has diminishe to 60%. an 28% loss since 2008 There is still 4 months to the campaign, wathc it
41. romney at wall
Yoel ,   Ossining,NY   (07.30.12)
An insult is an intentional act. Do you believe Romney intended an insult? By reading all the talkbacks here, there is no question that his visit to the Kotel is not considered an insult by "all Jews>"
42. Good Intentions, bad Timing
ltrail ,   United States   (07.30.12)
Mr. David Ha'ivri. First, I want to apologize for offending Jews there in the State of Israel and everywhere. Yes, someone made a serious blunder in arrangements for Mr. Romney. His trip may have been just a photo op for his campaign but I hope not. His visit to Israel is very significant in spite of the insult: He is the first Presidential Candidate to officially declare that Jerusalem is the Capital of the State of Israel. Forty years ago, I wrote to our sitting President of the United States and expressed dismay that our Embassy was located in Tel Aviv, and that it ought to be moved to Jerusalem. I believe that Mr. Romney, should he be elected, will make good on his intention. Let us all hope and pray for that day to come.
43. While I agree
Paul ,   Jerusalem, Israel   (07.30.12)
that Obama is about the worst thing going for America and the planet, I don't see what Romney chose to do, on Tish'b'Av an insult. If a photo-op on Tish'b'Av helps him get elected, by all means I welcome it. Romney may have picked the wrong day, but an insult, not at all. Arabs whose behavior is repulsive when it comes to issues like this, threatens with death anyone over a perceived insult. Jews don't have that nature, which any honest person would admit. Jews should appreciate the simple truth and decency that Romney represents.
44. I could hardly disagree more.
Raymond in DC ,   Washington, USA   (07.30.12)
Tisha B'Av is a perfect time to acknowledge the tragedies of Jewish history and the current threats against the re-born Jewish state. Romney touched on all those themes before welcoming crowds - hardly a sign they were offended. And that includes the Rabbi at the Wall who ushered Gov. Romney around. Aside from the odd columnist, all indications are it was a successful visit for all concerned. As to the support Obama got in the last election, most indications are it was around 78%. And if a communal Shabbat meal I attended last weekend is any indication, there are still lots of liberal Jews around he can count on. Much of the talk was about "social justice", the Dream Act and other "progressive" causes. Israel wasn't mentioned.
45. the flipside
Leah G ,   Itamar   (07.30.12)
It is hard for us to trust in man- but try not to see the downside on this -the flip side of churban (destruction) (concentrated into the 9th of Av) is the rebulit -the meaning of it in our lives today draw us to Yerushalayim habnooya. Like so many things upside down maybe this is a sign that soon all the nations will come to serve One G-d in this place . It draws the power of tumah to it, yes- but there is also a place at this soon time of it being a home for all the people of the nations (that are sincere). Let's pray Romney is one of them.
46. good idea, deliberate timing
Mike Eskenazi ,   Mexico City, Mexico   (07.30.12)
When one looks at what Mr. Romney said during his visit, one realizes that he is conscious of the suffering the people of Israel have endured. Mr. Romney wants to prevent further suffering. Such a sentiment is an answered prayer for Israel. I think he planned to come on this date and say such words.
47. What's wrong with his timing?
Shoshana ,   New York   (07.30.12)
I didn't hear of anyone objecting to his presence at the kotel on Tisha B'Av. He is a respectful and respectable person whose presence didn't grate on anyone's sensitivities. Why are you criticizing when it's totally uncalled for?
48. Not so bright...
Aharon ,   Holon, Israel   (07.30.12)
Ha'ivri, I'm not a supporter of Romney. He, in my humble opinion will be no different than Obama, in that both are flip-floppers as Americans would call it. However, the fact that he was there on Tisha B'av, could also be interpreted as him paying 'homage' to the fall of the Beit HaMikdash! Remember, he's mormon, and Mormon's, along with most of Evangelical Christians want to see the restoration of the Beit HaMikdash just as much as religious Jews want to see it restored. So, next time you write another Op-Ed piece, you might actually want to think before you begin typing. This so called piece is just nonsense!
49. Romney backs Israel and it's Capitla, Jerusalem..
Raina ,   USA   (07.31.12)
I don't feel that Romney meant any disrespect and I don't believe he meant it in that way. His time is limited and his trip was scheduled around his campaign appointments. His love for Israel is sincere and goes back a long way. And to #14... You are not too bright!
50. Romney
Moshe Tortomasi ,   Jerusalem   (07.31.12)
This is the dumbest thing I have ever seen. This article is written as if no Jews were involved in bringing Romney. The author is an idiot. All American Challengers for the presidency comes to Israel to show their support of the State. Obama didn't really like Israel to begin with. But Romney came at the end of Tish B'Av you dim wit. Those of us Jews who do support Romney and are going to vote for him see nothing wrong with the timing.
51. Chicago gangsters
Mike ,   Jerusalem   (07.31.12)
The Chicago gang has taken over the White House and you obviously cannot handle a candidate who is a non-smoker, non-drinker, religious person who loves America and Israel. The total opposite of Obama.
52. Obama and Romney
iselin ,   Islo, Norway   (07.31.12)
No one seems to remember that Obama was the lesser of two evils in the US presidential race 4 years ago. Who in his/her right mind would have wanted a nutcase like Sarah Palin a heartbeat away from the presidency? Mitt, no thanks! A hypocrite at best. That he visited Israel is part of the normal candidate agenda. It's a case of the devil you know versus the devil you don't know.
53. when is it good timing?
jack bauer   (07.31.12)
54. No time to critique the replacement for Obamalek
deborah lurya ,   irvine   (07.31.12)
Blame the Israeli statesmen/politicians for this political gaff- Romney did not mess up, they did. His timing was perfect from his point of view, he does not book his tours nor does he keep tabs on the Jewish calendar, that is not his place or responsibility. i do not see how you can cast blame on Romney for this - give the guy a break- now is the wrong time to be criticizing the contender to the worst, most anti-jewish, pro-arab president ever- Obamalek. Overlook and put this in perspective- if anyone should be blames, the burden is with Israel's diplomatic corp (weak as ever)
55. #52 Obama and Romney
ltrail ,   United States   (07.31.12)
I find it very interesting that a foreigner, such as yourself, would insert an opinion into the political circus that we have here in the USofA.. Your opinion regarding lesser of two evils in any of our Presidential races, I'll take with less than a grain of sand as reliable or not.
56. Let Romney see
Zev ,   Israel   (08.01.12)
What could be a stronger message to a U.S. Presidential candidate and through him the rest of the world that after almost 2000 years, we Jews are still mourning the destruction of our Temple.
57. #55
iselin ,   Oslo, Norway   (08.01.12)
I am a US citizen and have voted in every election since I was of voting age. Just because I live most of the time abroad does not mean that I have abandoned my native country. On the contrary, I have the objectivity of seeing from a distance, which is good.
58. Iselin # 52
Eaglebeak ,   Left Coast, USA   (08.01.12)
Sarah Palin was the governor of Alaska. No other governor had as high a popularity rating from their people as she did. You can't run a state and be that popular with your people if your not doing a good job. Only a conservative Republican woman could have been treated the way she was by the press. Only a conservative black man like Clarence Thomas could have been treated by the press the way he was. Anyone else and it would have been sexism or racism. Don't believe everything you read Iselin.
59. #1 78% of Jews voted for Obama in '08
Terry ,   Boston, U.S.A.   (08.01.12)
Get your facts straight. It's likely that Jews will go for Obama again in '12, but not in such great numbers. The rose has lost its scent.
60. Romney's bad timing
Marilyn ,   USA   (08.02.12)
He's been doing weird things lately. Like the horse incident set up red flags for me. Now, the horse probably doesn't have much chance at winning at the Olympics, but everyone's still proud of all our team in dressage anyways. And it's not that we're not as good at certain things as someone else, sometimes it's more that we march to our own drummer. And it's even good because we don't feel that we have to win in everything, nor do we feel like we have to do the same thing as someone else. However with Romney not even being there and him even disowning the horse by saying it's his wifes, it's just weird.
