Actually the Mother wanted the child to wait until she was 16 before she made the decision. Her father had also been surprised that his daughter wanted to convert. It is just sad that it ended up in court, and like all kids her parents had agreed to make her wait 6 years and then make her mind up. But thing that really swayed the judges decision was the submission by a Rabbi, which could have been written by a crazy person.

I'm not sure what kind of Judaism the family practiced, if any, but it obviously didn't make a big impression on this young lady. I think you should first realize that the talkback page on Jpost is hardly representative of judaism or jewish opinion. 2nd. Histroical experiences with christianity have been VERY poor to say the least. 20-30 years of improvements dont take away 2000 years of misery and persecution. 3d. I too think the opinions voiced her are ridiculous I am 100% halachically Jewish and couldnt care less if a Jew converts to Christianity or vice versa. To each his own. as long as the choice is voluntary and does not include force. actually, i do believe that is a basic human right. What youa re seeing here is base tribalism, which unfortunately does still exist in some corners of Judaism. I prefer the more educated version though.
