1. Bypass the rabbinute, civil ceremonies are way over due
Haim ,   TA   (08.07.12)
2. They could have had a Jewish ceremony in the US
American Sabrah   (08.07.12)
The Rabbis there are not as greedy as the Rabbanut. Some of them will gladly officiate a wedding just for the mitzvah. I got married in the US and glad that I did for when I came to Israel, the Rabbanut didn't want to recognize our Ketubah as being valid because the Rabbi who officiated our wedding wasn't Haredi. Yes the Rabbanut is corrupt and greedy but assimilation is not the answer. Children born from these civil marriages will be considered illegitimate, especially if the mother doesn't keep taharat mishpacha.
3. The statistics should be 5 in 5! Hit the bastards' pockets!
tom ,   tel aviv   (08.07.12)
4. Non Halahic marriage might be..
ORA ,   JERUSALEM   (08.07.12)
a time bomb.It could happen that their daughters fall in love with a Halahic Jew,who refuses to marry her, since he wants 100% Jewish children.
5. @ 4 100% Jewish children?
Philos ,   Herzeliya   (08.07.12)
What if the child is 96.77% Jewish, is that ok? What rubbish!
6. @ Ora, # 4
M. Davison ,   Ra'anana, Israel   (08.07.12)
Any child born of a Jewish mother is halakhicly Jewish. If you're religious, you should know that better than I. Your reasoning is not just faulty, but non-existent. The only people it makes any difference to are Haredim, who arrange their marriages anyway.
7. They shall stay there where they have married !
olim hadashim ,   tel aviv/israel   (08.07.12)
8. A girlfriend of mine had trouble when her
Arlene ,   Israel   (08.07.12)
daughter wanted to marry, because mom wasnt born in Israel. She had to prove she was Jewish, and even her own marriage certificate...stamped by the rabinute wasn't enough...why? they wanted more proof...that costs and would take time to find it after 35 years. (no pcs then). Cyprus was on the books, until a clerk mananged to get one of the rabbis to sign an ok for the rabbi of the town the daughter was getting married in. The bottom line...money money money.... OK must expect to pay something for their service, but not to be bleed of cash. Thing worked out ok, but wasnt forgotten by the son, he also got married in the US, and yes a mitzva. The rabbi was only happy that they married(each being jewish) and not go outside the faith. The rabinute in Israel have far too much power over this part of peoples lives. Not too far from Islamic laws when you think about it, but at least you wont get stoned or hung.
9. 1 in 5 Israelis are not Jewish, so now what??
ma nishma ,   modiin   (08.07.12)
So what is the big deal, they go to Cyprus or where ever to marry their shikshi or shagetz. BTW, I am not a close minded Jew. I believe every family should have a shikshi or shagetz so that they can do the shabbos work. (its an old joke, stupid)
10. Unlike the secular High Court, Orth.Rabbis have a tremendous
Samuel   (08.07.12)
responsiblity not only towards people, but MAINLY towards G-d. There's no way they can allow a marriage between Jews and non-Jews, including those who weren't converted by Orthodox Rabbis. We must be thankful to these Rabbis for all they do to preserve the Jewish identity.
11. You can be catholic, but the rabinate would marry you
Potash Katiftof ,   Safed, Israel   (08.07.12)
if you walked in wearing a strimel and bekeshe and a kippa with a little tehilim book and answered "baruch hashem" to every question, they would marry you even if in reality you were catholic. The rabinate just harasses people who look secular because they are high on the little power trip
12. 4 out or 5 marriages are done by the Rabbinate...
Baruch ,   Boston, USA   (08.07.12)
Not bad in a country that's so polarized between secular and religious. The rabbis have a responsibility to keep Israel Jewish, which is something that many secular Jews don't care about.
13. RE: #10
Eran ,   Washington, DC, USA   (08.07.12)
As Tiberius said to the Roman consuls: deorum iniuras dis curae Wrongs done to the gods are the gods' concern. (Tacitus Annals I.LXXIII)
14. Sam #10 - you are soooo wrong
Brian Cohen ,   Judean Peoples Front   (08.07.12)
You obviously don't know how the econo-rabbincal power system in Israel works. It has almost NOTHING to do with Hashem and everything to do with power and money. If they wanted to preserve Jewish identity they would bend over backwards to HELP Jewish couples get married in Israel. They are preserving their salaries, that is all. It has nothing to do with halacha or Judaism - in fact, it is a hilul Hashem what they are doing to drive Jewish people away from religion. These allegedly "orthodox" rabbis are doing a terrible disservice by turning people away from Eretz Yisrael to get married instead of doing kiruv work to get them to stay here and go under a chuppah. Shame on them. Shame on you for thinking that they are doing avodat kodesh. They are not.
15. 6 The Ketuba is a proof that ..
ORA ,   JERUSALEM   (08.07.12)
the parents are Jewish. No need to be so agressive.
16. Brian #14 I cant agree with enough!!! (End)
Arlene ,   Israel   (08.07.12)
17. 14 Rabbis are not money people...
ORA ,   JERUSALEM   (08.07.12)
The money they receive goes to the needy.
18. #10 you are wrong
israel israeli ,   tel aviv   (08.07.12)
The problem is that the extreme Left has allowed the Haredim to rule the rabbanut. The Haredim gain because they get jobs and money. Try to get a kashrut certificate. The extreme Left gains because they want to weaken their archenemy the religious Zionist . The only way to solve the problem is to Let National Religious take over rabbanut, but the Leftists won't let that happen.
19. Converts Second Class Citizens
Mychal ,   TN, USA   (08.07.12)
I recognize the fact that I will be Jewish enough to live in Israel, pay taxes, and serve in the military--in short, to live and die for Israel--but never Jewish enough to marry another Jew in Israel. Tell me that's not a bit racist.
20. NOT ONLY THE SOLUTION, BUT A NECESSITY !
FO ,   Belgium   (08.07.12)
Separation between State and Religion ! No democracy existing without it !!!
21. 19 Halahic converts are 100% Jews.
ORA ,   JERUSALEM   (08.07.12)
22. #20 Belgium, How could a state be created without it?
Michael ,   California, USA   (08.07.12)
How can Israel continue without accomplishing separation of religion and state? Lazy Israeli lawmakers better hurry up, the voters also!
23. Ora , 17 Money goes to the needy ?
Charles ,   Petach Tikva   (08.07.12)
I know that your memory is very short , but we had here an article about millionaire "rabbis" . From where their , first , money if not from those brainwashed ones ?
24. Ora , 21 . But they have'nt a Jewish background
Charles ,   Petach Tikva   (08.07.12)
But they react very differently on NON religious issues . They are ONLY Jews by halacha , not more .
25. Separate state and religion!
Jay ,   Israel   (08.07.12)
It is really time for it. Btw bituach leumi accepts also cohabitation. Which is actually in many democratic countries also an option so Israel just needs to get the civil marriage possibility to be run.
26. Mychal , the problem is "who converted you"
Charles ,   Petach Tikva   (08.07.12)
Some communities in the USA operate "conversions" in a very rapid way , and in great numbers . It's not serious , nor accepted . I know some who converted this way , not in the USA but in Europe . Their children aren't Jewish anymore , they too married non Jews , only in the civil way . The Jewish faith is NOT proselyting at all . It's not easy to become a Jew . And yes , it's a bit racist , i agree with this . It's not easy to become , or to be , a Jew .
27. Israel Will Always Be A Backwards Theocracy
World Citizen ,   the world   (08.07.12)
As Long As Orthodox Rabbis Run The Country. Why do secular Jews put up with this nonsense? These orthodox rabbis are truly the spiritual brothers of Islamic mullahs and Bible-thumping nut-job preachers like John Hagee in the USA.
28. #27 And that's none of your business.
Jake   (08.07.12)
29. The state is neglecting 20% of the population. Legalize...
Avi   (08.07.12)
...civil unions. It is not possible that those who don't get along with that organization are barred from marrying in their own country and must seek comfort in a foreign state. It is undemocratic and shameful.
30. #10 makes it clear the Rabbi court has become irrelevant
Avi   (08.07.12)
Like he says, they have a responsibility towards their personal beliefs and not those they wed. Therefor the state MUST provide options for a tremendous part of the country.
