1. the heart of the matter
roger ,   zurich switzerland   (08.07.12)
Putting aside the spurious halakhic matrilineal rule, this all begs the fundamental question: 'Who is a Jew?''. The truth is that the Israeli 'people' do not have a homogeneous identity or ethnicity, but the nation continues to pretend it does. This will eventually blow up into a major crisis.
2. When it comes to this conflict. Lag B'Omer all the time.
Henry from New York ,   USA   (08.07.12)
The media just keeps adding more fuel to the fire and getting people to take sides. Just keep stirring the pot to make more money, YNet and co. If there's violence, you might'nt accept or even take the blame, but it's still your fault.
3. Sad news for Israel
Jay ,   Israel   (08.07.12)
These haredims are over the top. They are obnoxious. Taking over the country but contributing nothing! Israel is end when these people become majority. Us chilonim just leave the country where there are normal way of life possible without "Taliban" way of life. It is a wake up call for us either leave or restriction must be done. Limiting child support till maximum 3. Compulsory science and secular education. No free IVF. No support for religious schools if no secular education is allowed. Yeshivas also should be given support the same way as for normal universities. If us can go to army or civil service they must too. These are just some possibilities to make the situation even otherwise as said above us the decimate just leave.
4. when the haredim will win, israel is lost
Ze'ev   (08.07.12)
when the haredim win the battle about Israel, israel will go down! Haredim dont serve, dont work, dont develop new technologies, dont creat jobs and so on! Come on israel, wake up now!
5. Jerusalem
larry ,   kibbutz   (08.07.12)
after all the secular jews leave to Tel Aviv , it will make it easier to give Jerusalem to the arabs ,, get rid of the religious fanatics
6. winners & losers?
yosef ,   williamsburg US   (08.07.12)
None of the medinah is the battle ground for any of us at our will, this is where all of those involved have been misled by the zionist and national religious.
7. Another false 'battle' / slanted story
bob k ,   orlando usa   (08.07.12)
Time loves controversy in Israel and its always doom and gloom. There is no battle for control, if Mr. Pinchasi wants a secular neighborhood he should consider either encouraging seculars to move there or consider moving himself to Tel Aviv. Why are 'mixed' neighborhoods so threatening to some secular people? Sounds like intolerance to me and that is the real danger not the haredim who nevertheless need to be better integrated into Israeli society.
8. Men in Black
postroad ,   USA   (08.07.12)
Demographics trumps all else. Visiting son in Israel. He was just out of the IDF. An Ultra told him he was living like "a goy.," because he did not read torah three times a day nor keep kosher. Son said: I served so you could have your beliefs. Black Hat: no need. Hashem will take care of all things.
9. Let TA be the capital of Israel...
ORA ,   JERUSALEM   (08.07.12)
and Jerusalem the Jewish Holy City.
10. Time magazine - never a good word for Israel
Abraham ben Jacob ,   Canada   (08.07.12)
People should ask themselves why Time magazine for the past 30 years has only reported negative stories on Israel, or stories of conflict regarding Israel. What is Times' objective in 30 years of Anti-Israel slanted stories ? One would think that they could produce even one positive story on Israel, or perhaps even a neutral article. Time has had 30 years to say something nice regarding Israel -- so what are they waiting for ?

12. Eat your secular hearts out!
Zalman ,   Yerushalayim   (08.07.12)
Emigrate now to LA.
13. MAJOR ERROR
(08.07.12)
Three generations ago, CHILONIM were all but extinct. ULTRA-ORTHODOX resided in Jerusalem and other cities in Israel for HUNDREDS OF YEARS, certainly hundreds of years before chilonim dreamt of moving to the Jewish state and secularize and defile it.
14. Haredim
mike ,   Uk   (08.07.12)
No problem with this, the seculars will leave Israel and return to their homes in the West or indeed Russia, The haredim will be the majority and the country will implode. There is nothing left for jews but to once again emigrate. The promised land is Western Europe not some middle east backwater where in the name of religion they are killing each other.
15. Seculars should fight for land of israel
Mike ,   Haifa   (08.07.12)
This is the result of undoing the natural jewishness of the seular majority over the decades which resulted in the apathetic attitude toward the Land in general and jerusalem in particular. The only people tgen left to keep Israel jewish and hold onto the land are the religious, ultra orhodox and religiouz zionist which by their good work of keeping the land and jerusalem they add a RELIGIOUS layer and character to our lives. If seculars get up admit failure with oslo and fght for land, then the power of orthodox will diminish and a life-embracing modern jewish culture will be created. THE LAND UNIFIES US.
16. Does Kiryat Yovel belong to the secular?
(08.08.12)
How is it that the government and media allow them to hang immoral posters in religious neighborhoods?
17. what's the difference between....
david ,   jerusalem   (08.08.12)
imagine the following headline " Italians in NYC complain about the blacks taking over the city" I smell a fat lawsuit right there. Umm can anyone explain the difference? They're both racism and because I don't like you, you may not live in "my" community. Yet against one minority it's a cardinal sin while against another it's a "mitzvah".
18. Except a small ruling secular elite and the imported

20. 'Time' never misses a chance to put down Israel
Shalom Freedman ,   Jerusalem Israel   (08.08.12)
'Time' never misses a chance to put down Israel. And anyone who closely read the article would see a number of distortions, simplifications and outright false claims. For instance it claims that Jerusalem is now becoming an exclusively Jewish city, when in fact the Arab population has been increasing its proportion of the general population ever since 67'. The 'Time' story makes it seems as if there are two populations in the City the ultra-Orthodox and the extremely secular. It says nothing about the continuum of connection to the Tradition. It certainly says nothing about the National Religious or the simply Traditional populations. It too shows no subtlety whatsoever in its writing about the ultra- Orthodox world, and makes no distinction between those who are anti- Zionist and those fundamentally sympathetic to the Jewish state. It does point to a real problem but does so also without indicating the kinds of effort being made both inside and outside the Government to address the problem.

Jake   (08.08.12)
Western Europe, Europe in general, is in the process of imploding as we speak. Did those who who escaped with their lives on lifeboats turn back to board the sinking Titanic?
25. #5 Thanks for revealing the Leftist conspiracy
Jake   (08.08.12)
in all its ugly details. I have always suspected that was their agenda all along. Go back to La-La-Land, Larry.
26. And this calls for a Time cover story treatment?
AlexB ,   Toronto, Canada   (08.09.12)
It's an internal Israeli matter that's been going on for a VERY long time (if you see old Israeli movies from 60s and 70s you see the same being depicted, with ultra-orthodox rioting and throwing rocks at cars). And the presentation of this as "a fight for the soul of Jerusalem and the entire State of Israel" is bombastic American-style sensationalism. Another thing is that Hebrew is full of all this military slang, but when translated literally to English the context is lost and non-Israelis may take these "commando raids" and "war" references as more literal than they are and be more alarmed than is called for. It's one of those internal cultural stories that without being provided with a long background context story may be completely misunderstood.
