I think most people here are missing the point. What really matters is not Olympic medals, Nobel prizes and the rest of it. What is important is the overall level of social, economic, political, and technological achievement together with quality of life - in any society. The fact that the UK has exceeded all expectations in medal achievement does not mean there is a high level of participation in sporting activity. Nobel prizes do not necessarily indicate an overall high level of academic attainment. No country should be complacent simply because a few have won glittering prizes.
