1. Speaking of protestors...
Devorah   (08.18.12)
what happened to big-mouth Daffy Leef and her zombie followers? And here I've been waiting for them to bring down the government. Daffy, wake up! Weren't you going to have a million adoring protestors sludging in your droppings this summer?
2. Typical Leftist. Always blame non-leftist government
Iranian Hunter   (08.18.12)
But when the government is a leftist, oh no....hands off, he is blameless because he is leftist.
3. i agree on the article the price grains is a global problem
joe ,   kfar saba israel   (08.18.12)
because of the climatic change worldwide in usa they got the worst heatwaves of the last 50 years!!! but here the gas liter is a robbery more than 65% are taxes
4. Bibi
David Melnick ,   Netanya   (08.18.12)
I quite agree but he is responsible for his collegues receiving BMWs at the taxpayers expense. Something a little more appropriate during these harsh times would have been in order or is this just another example of the selfish behavior endemic in this country?
5. # 1
Philip . ,   Afula Israel   (08.18.12)
The protesters on on holiday in Europe, they should be back soon for the new school year and perhaps cooler weather
6. Um. Yes, it is.
Yossi ,   Ramat Gan, Israel   (08.18.12)
One of the reasons that we put up with such amazingly high taxes is so that should, for instance, bread prices temporarily rise due to drought, the government will have a safety net to fall back on and temporarily subsidize bread so as not to raise the price. This is one of the core concepts of a welfare state, evidently you failed Ezrachut class because this is one of the basic concepts that's taught in it...
7. It is because he is spineless
Miche Norman ,   Hod Hasharon   (08.18.12)
Last year Bibi cravenly caved into the anti-social protests and stayed silent as the anti-business mood has sewpt across the country - causing enormous damage t the private sector which is the engine that pushes the Israeli economy. Now the price of his cowardice has come home to roost - and guess what he has to tax the middle class to pay for it. If he isthat craven in the face of idiots like Didn't get drafted Dafne - just imagine what we re facing when a real enemy cmes along!
8. It occurs to me ...
Sarah B ,   U.S.A. / Israel   (08.18.12)
... that if Israel did not have devote so much of its expenditures on defense, there would be plenty of money to subsidize food staples and to reduce the high cost of living in Israel. So maybe the solution is to get rid of the enemies on our borders and the enemies from within once and for all -- which will send a message to our unpleasant neighbors that Israel is not to be trifled with -- and then we can set about improving on our Zionist dream. Do not ever lose sight of what Israel has accomplished, despite our overwhelming defensive burden. Imagine what can be done if our enemies can be neutralized or, at the very least, made considerably wary.
9. Remove price controls!
Adam ,   Ashdod, Israel   (08.18.12)
It's basic economics! I love this country but these socialist policies only end up hurting people.
10. Netanyahu is responsible for turning
AK   (08.18.12)
Israel into a technological power house from a second grade, stagnated socialist economy.
11. The Moguls
Zivron   (08.19.12)
The moguls. And wealthy in the Galus are obligated to donate Israel provides the power and courage the Galus needs provide the social sector.
12. # 9
Wonderboy ,   Tiberias, Israel   (08.19.12)
So what solution do you propose and still retain cohesive society ?
13. bread,beer & cigs
steve ,   israel   (08.19.12)
True global warming, drought & and a host of factors are outside Bibi's control. What seems a paltry increase in the price of bread for some becomes a serious monthly budgetary consideration for others. The government,it's head and the people know these are difficult times. Serious people must make serious decisicions. Increasing the price of beer, cigs and 36 ag on bread fall way outside serious. The government knows it and so do the people.
14. Maybe...
A Jerusalemite ,   Jerusalem, Israel   (08.19.12)
Maybe, just maybe the drought has contributed to the price of bread, but trying to distract the people with war is definitely all Netanyahu! He talks daily of Iran, but never addresses our daily social problems and poverty. Raising the price of bread to pay for BMW cars, lower taxes for the rich and for large corporations, and further subsidies for the "settlers" is not the way!
15. To: Steve at No. 13
Sarah B ,   U.S.A. / Israel   (08.19.12)
Perhaps one short-term solution could be in the form of applying a luxury tax on items such as alcoholic beverages and cigarettes. Both are bad for your health, so it's a win-win -- raises revenue for the government while controlling the consumption of alcohol and cigarette smoking. Especially smoking -- sooner or later, smokers become a huge medical burden, so the more people that will stop smoking because they don't want to pay three or four times the price they pay now for a pack of cigarettes, the better.
16. to sarah B at #15
steve ,   israel   (08.19.12)
It shud be pretty clear that I have changed my mind - obesity studies in the US amongst many others indicate over-eating is the # 1 killer with smoking #3 - alcohol is not rated. So taxing food will curb the consumption of food - Studies from the far east indicate that the arrival of Mac Donald etc has raised the incidence of heart desease with the switch from a starch diet(rice). So lets tax meat. In fact enjoy today they'll be taxing sex tomorrow.
17. Cigarettes and bread
Charles ,   Petach Tikva   (08.19.12)
Subsidising bread more , benefits the rich people too . Regarding taxing the cigarettes , it's more against the poorer . For the rich people , no problem to pay , much , more . The problem with cigarettes is that they bring in a revenue for the finance minister TODAY , while the burden will fall on a FUTURE one .
18. Plain bread MUST be subsided...
ORA ,   JERUSALEM   (08.19.12)
On the other hand, luxury breads, which are eaten by the rich might be taxed more.Cigarettes, the more it is taxed, the better it is,for financial and health reasons.
19. Ora , there is subsidised bread
Charles ,   Petach Tikva   (08.19.12)
Those you find in quantities at your super . They cost between 6 and 7 ils i think . What is "luxury" bread ? it has more expensive grains , needs maybe more work . So more expensive . Luxury ? Those who pay , 18 ils for a bread are not necessarrely "rich" people . Taxing the cigarettes more will only punish the "poorer" , but will not prevent them from smoking . It's better to educate the youth , not to smoke . I always say to them : you think that by smoking you're a man , but you'll need to be a man to stop smoking . Do you know modia.org ? it will certainly be interesting for you . Parashat Hashavoua , feasts , laws , etc etc .
20. 19 Charles,poor people can t pay..
ORA ,   JERUSALEM   (08.19.12)
18sh.for a bread. After the war we paid a bread 1frank. Is bread vital?.In China they ate during centuries rice instead of bread. Well said, what told the boys about smoking. Thanks for "modia. org" exactly what i was looking for. Elul is a most important month, and i want to know all about it. Have a fine week,Charles.
21. Ora , 100 years ago it was less than 1 fr.
Charles ,   Petach Tikva   (08.20.12)
Bread vital ? could you live without ? We are NOT Chinese . Enjoy this site . They have a "strange" way to transript Hebrew .
22. Disagree - current government does contribute to global warm
5th beneration ,   Israel   (08.20.12)
The example of anti-Socialist, unIsraeli greed, sense of entitlement, and lack of national empathy presented by the higher-ups has infected Israeli society. One of the major symptoms? More and more unnecessary SUVs on our roads, sucking up enemy fuel and spitting out toxins despite reports of poor air quality in our limited airspace. Which we apparently don't care about. Further, there has been inadequate support for alternative engines. While "bankrupt" states in the US have hooked onto more and more hybrid vehicles and "clean air” buses as a means of rising out of the red, we jack up prices for the latter and continue with our old-fashioned black-smoke buses. Exorbitant import taxes and blackpocket support of meat producers mean fewer alternatives to animal products - both in the absolute sense, and affordability-wise, with the knowledge that a reduction in meat farming and consumption means a smaller carbon footprint.
23.  21 Charles,a family whose...
ORA ,   JERUSALEM   (08.20.12)
monthly food budget is 2000 sh., bread of 18 sh. would be about the quarter of their budget . I could very well live without bread,if necessary. I enjoy fish, salads, vegetables and fruits. In short healthy food.
24. Ora , i know , it's expensive ! TRY # 2
Charles ,   Petach Tikva   (08.20.12)
But this was the highest price i've seen for bread in my super . In other places it's cheaper , but still above the poor's people budget . If necessarry you could well live without bread , i know , you , and i , do it during the 7 days of Pesach . You out of religion , i because i like matsot . What's better than a "haimische" matsebraii ? If you choose your food for health reasons it's fine , but i like to enjoy not so healthy food too .
25. #23...buying corn today and veges is also expensive
Netanya ,   Netanya   (08.21.12)
Today even a salad, you make yourself is expensive; so eating your diet will not save families from not being able to provide food for everyone. The supermarket near me, just this month raised all veges to prices which are impossible to pay (cabbage was 99ag- 1.99NIS and is now 3.99NIS) This is what I have seen across the board with prices. The salaries of me or my husband have not increased while the gas and foods have, so where shall all the extra money needed come from? All my friends feel the pinch today also and when times were better, Bibi didn't lift the benefits he had removed during hard times, so why are we in any trouble now? Corruption of the GOVT, the right and the left. I say fire them all they are killing the country.
26. Netanya , 25
Charles ,   Petach Tikva   (08.21.12)
The price hikes are NOT the fault of our govenement , certainly not all of them . Gas prices : they are expensive . Wheat , corn price are UP , worldwide . More demand than offer . We buy our fruits and veges at the market . More choice , fresh , and also cheaper . The difference in price is not so important for a small family , we don't need so much . But you need time to go .
27. 5th generation
Charles ,   Petach Tikva   (08.21.12)
World bank stats for 2008 , carbon dioxide emissions Ton/capita . Israel 5.18 . Europe and central Asia 7.8 . World 4.75 . In the world stats you have very much underdevelopped countries , if developped at all . They don't use much fuel . So Israel , with his tiny population compared to Europe , does NOT contribute very much to the global warming .
