1. R. Yosef would feel right at home in the Isamic Republic
Katamon ,   korzib@hotail.com   (08.21.12)
The kind of things are in no way different from what the clerics of Qom demand from their government. 'They allow women to testify'??? F off Ovadi to whatever dark medieval hole you crawled out of.
2. racist
roger ,   zurich switzerland   (08.21.12)
Yousef called gentiles donkeys who are in this world to serve the Jews. He is an abomination. This low-life is the spiritual leader of about 2 million Jews. Be afraid.
3. Torah?
Jean-Pierre ,   Austria   (08.21.12)
Did not the power above heard your prayers when you were all in egypt, he delivered you all out of Egypt, that you all shall be free and to have a country to embrace, and to be righteous at heart, and to be strong against evil, as the 10 commandments, and the King Solomon of Israel who wrote great proverbs to help the young generation to handle life with care and responsibility....there is no balance in Israel, there is rather extreme religious and extreme seculars...its like the divide of Israel into Judea and Israel..then the babylonians came Instead of attacking each other, be humble, you have a home, reading rorah every day is not going to save you, did the power above not freed you so that you all may embrace life as a garden, make it wonderful, embrace your homeland of your forefathers.
4. What is the difference between this man and Iran clerick????
Jew1 ,   Ashdod   (08.21.12)
He even corssed them ahead. There is another news in headlines on ynet saying that in Iran woman is barred from having higher studies. He even went far ahead than them by calling wife with woman witness as whore. Sick ...very very sick people with very very sick mentality. Once we had rabbies who dared to make changes according to the changing time. For e.g. once men were allowed to marry many women and now not. But today's rabbies are disgrace to their own profession.
5. Ovadia Yosef would get into our veins and take
Mark ,   Lodz, Poland   (08.21.12)
each and everyone of us all back to the Middle Ages, if he could. What's the difference between him, an Imam and an Ayatollah? Sadly, not much...
6. I had a non-Jewish education in London
Roland Seener ,   London England   (08.21.12)
I was not the only one to do so.I am not an intentional Mitzva breaker and neither are many others. We all learn throughout our lives and "G"D" makes allowances for our short-comings and efforts to adhere to the 613 Commandments. You might as well say that the Great Rabbi Akiva is doomed as he was a simple Shepherd who started out on his more detailed Religious life at the age of forty.Yiftach had his troubles and was non as well informed as his brothers, but never the less played a major part in Jewish History.Abshalom was brought up in a religious environment, and so was Korah. Both should have been aware of Derech Eretz, having come from families with excellent "CV'S.All this boils down to is the calibre of the individual, and not his schooling or even his family environment.Plain and simple,it is the free-will of the individual as to how he/she turns out to in life.
7. big mouth
mark weisgold ,   israel   (08.21.12)
Why can't he just keep his primitive thoughts to himself. They only cause more problems for the country,
8. But secular money is alright, I guess
Ajax ,   Israel   (08.21.12)
If he walks like a parasite, quacks like a parasite, looks like a parasite, it must be a partner in Bibi's coalition.
9. He is an insult to Judaism.
Haya ,   Bat Yam   (08.21.12)
It is people like him who push intelligent people away from Judaism. It is only primitive people who listen to him.
10. About secular education
Robert ,   Israel   (08.21.12)
With due respect to the person who said these statementes, I think that most probably extreme heat affected his brains. On one side he uses and abuses of modernity, using medicines, transportation and others, and on the other side he spits on what he gets. Perhaps he would have preferred to live in caves or in leather tents and ride on mules or camels to move from one cave to the other as religios teachings do not teach medicine, nor architecture, nor engineering....and I am sure G'd gave all of us the facculty to learn all those things yeshivot are unable to provide. It is up to us to take or to leave these opportunities..
11. Poorly Written and Misleading Headline
Reuven Spolter ,   Yad Binyamin   (08.21.12)
Actually, Rav Ovadia did not slam secular education. I doubt he has anything against math or history. Rather, he slammed parents who send their children to secular schools, and not to religious schools. Your headline is misleading.
12. Torah
Ariel Ben Yochanan ,   Kfar Tapuah, Efraim   (08.21.12)
B"H - Torah does not accept "secularism" and nor should we (Jews). This "Jewish State" by seculars is a big lie.
13. Old stupid fool...nothing to be heard from him..move on ..
Al   (08.21.12)
14. The rantings of a lunatic cult leader
Haim ,   TA   (08.21.12)
No wonder His Royal Holliness dosent want children to have an education. Fundamentalist cultures and religions are afraid of what their followers might learn, or learn to think for themselves. This is a threat to the religious leaders whose major objective in life is holding onto power and influence over their followers.
15. cuko cuko
Haim ,   TA   (08.21.12)
16. When does he retire?
Bunnie Meyer ,   Los Angeles, CA USA   (08.21.12)
17. Isralistan - back to stone age
Israeli ,   Ashdod   (08.21.12)
Woman gives you birth, feeds you her milk, teaches you right and wrong, you catch her finger and go to school, she works while your father learns and feeds you food but she is not worthy enough to be a witness. This is sick than sicker it can get. Secular money is good but secular people and education is not? This sounds like a parasite. Without secular rules and democracy this country would have doomed long back. Your own existance is depanding upon god and also upon secular democratic rules and regulation. Without them you will create Iran in Israel and will feed us (jews) to dogs (those who wants to destroy us). You depend on secular money, you depend upon secular protection (miletary), but instead of having gratitute, all you all do is riots, spitting on woman, calling 6 year olds ____, breaking street lights, burning tyres and throwing stones and dipers on police, not paying tax which we need for our betterment (by the way this called stealing - one of ten commandments - you will not steal). Such a hipocrates....
18. A secular education does not corrupt
Devorah   (08.21.12)
There is a difference between learning something and embracing it as your very own. A person strong and faithful in Torah cannot be forced to embrace the teachings of a secular education, but that person can certainly learn a lot and go one to contribute to society and become independent -- of Rabbi Yosef. And it seems to me that is the crux of his problem.
19. # 9 Wrong
Sagi   (08.21.12)
An insult to humanity.
20. If Rabbi Ovadia Yosef shlita were PM Israel would be a
Yechi Adoneinu ,   Moreinu Verabenu   (08.21.12)
great country. Lawlessness, G-dlessness, immorality and violence would almost not be and people would live with morals and values. MAY G-D SEND MOSHIACH NOW!
21. If Rabbi Ovadia Yosef shlit"a were PM
Yechi Adoneinu ,   Moreinu Verabeinu   (08.21.12)
Israel would be a great country. Lawlessness, G-dless, violence and immorality would almost not be. Israeli citizens would live in bliss and happiness all their days.
22. bonkers
peter ,   tel aviv   (08.21.12)
We are used to hear the most amazing things from the rabbi like whether you are allowed to pull your nose hair on a Saturday etc. Then he comes off calling all things secular evil and also this is to be expected since he believes he he is wise and has a message. But what is really crazy is that our great PM deems it important to brief this man on the Iran issue.
23. this fool should be jailed
nadav ,   tlv   (08.21.12)
Why do we allow radical religious cult like the Haredim to openly function and meddle in our society? He should be sanctioned for encitement! Furthermore, there should be FULL separation of religion from state, where religion is under State supervision and all clergy must receive a secular BA before getting their theological degree. Finally, just as some countries have banned the Islamic veil, Israel should ban Haredi dress and no one with a beard should be allowed in the military or civil government jobs. The fanaticism must be broken!
24. Politicians included.
Dobryden ,   Afula Israel   (08.21.12)
This guy could not exist without the support of so many morons , politicians included. We are simply looking in the mirror and are rightly ashamed at what we see.The solution is not in the stars ,but with us.
25. To: No. 11
Bertram ,   London, UK   (08.21.12)
Technically, you are correct. However, you might agree that schools and education are closely related - and education is much more than the subjects which are taught. Children learn from the entire climate of a school, so the rabbi is, in effect, denouncing the educational experiences which children gain from secular schools. Even then, it's possible that the history taught in religious schools would have a somewhat different flavour from that taught in secular schools. Finally, I assume that the esteemed rabbi receives funding from the Israeli state. If so, I guess he might be performing the role of the licensed 'fool' - the court jester - for medieval monarchs.
26. #Not the article's headline is misleading, but your ...
Ehud   (08.21.12)
....attempt to play his indefensible remarks down. He is a man dressed like in the Middle ages with a world view from the Middle ages and a vision to get there back (actually Middle ages were mire advanced). Democracy is "wicked" (another Middle age expression), equality between men and women, learning math and English (he couldn't read even your post defending him). But to live of a 60,000 Shekel pension he receives from those taxpayers who went to state schools is ok. The guy is disgusting, but we won't let him hijack Judaism from us "wicked, wicked" non-orthodox Zionists
27. Who cares?
MeMeMe   (08.21.12)
the fact that somebody cares about what this idiot thinks is a bad sign for the state of Israel ....
28. # 12 Ariel you are free to leave the state
Haim ,   TA   (08.21.12)
In fact i will pay the air fair to Tehran for you. Economy or bussiness class ?
29. Gold, silver & iron
T. eccentricus ,   Tiarajú   (08.21.12)
With all due respect for the dear Rabbi, it all depends on the quality of the soul, as per Plato's classification (gold, silver and iron souls). A lesser soul will sink to the bottom like a rock, whatever the environment, a loftier soul will keep its integrity.
30. Sacred Secular
Zivron   (08.21.12)
The sacred secular are protecting the Believers through Medicine and Science without which Birthrates and survival would be much lower. It's got to be a unity the polarity of opposites a impregnable core.
