1. how these poor haredi kids will make a living?
Ze'ev ,   Nbg, germany   (08.27.12)
They get not teached a good core curriculum! How they should find a job? How they can build up firms, businesses? They will run directly into jobelessness or lowwage jobs! And soon they will become the majority in Israel! How Israel will survive than? Israel is a high tech nation! But how to maintain it, when so many people have no clue about science?

Your country is striving to achieve "Third World" status within the next decade and your and your colleagues are doing your best to promote the process.
4. A sad indictment of politics in Israel
Gabriel ,   Tel Aviv   (08.27.12)
Everyone knows this, every government has known this was coming for decades and none of them have done a thing. Why? Well, they need haredi parties to get power and obtaining power has always been more important for politicians than the future of Israel.
5. I look forward...
Aharon ,   Los Angeles, CA   (08.27.12)
This is going to marvelous! The state continues to financially support the notion that a segment of society can just sit around all day reading, not working, breeding more hungry mouths to feed, all while allowing others to do all of the work, construction, protection, etc., etc. If nothing is done to curtail this (and this is not an anti-haredi post, in fact it's to save the haredi community from themselves, and Israel for that matter), then that will be the end of Israel as we know it. Israel will definitely go back to the stone age, but probably not before the entire world tries to intervene, thus repeating the same ole narrative that Jews are the victims, when indeed it is us who time after time continue to put the noose around our own necks. Wake up! Smell the Humus! Stop being so short sighted!
6. With an education system
Raphael ,   Netanya   (08.27.12)
Explaining that the Earth is flat, Israel will lose its edge and intellectual advance, heading to the same level as Gaza. Worse than a nuclear Iran.

All you have to do is not seek an alliance with the US or the now-defunct Soviet Union.
8. Demographic Timebomb
Philip K ,   Wexford, Ireland   (08.27.12)
Question: What will happen to Israel when the Arabs outnumber the Jews? How will the 'Democratic' state of Israel survive with a large muslim majority? Arab birth rates in Israel are currently higher than that of Jews. Therefore it is only a matter of time until Jews are the minority. What happens then? Demographic Timebomb!!!

Israel's Jewish population is still 80% of the country. The issue is less the growth of the Arab sector but the question of how to better integrate the Haredi sector into the mainstream. Ireland too faces critical problems, how will you deal with it? Your debt is beyond Greek levels, your population is shrinking, your alcoholism levels are epic and your industries are virtually meaningless internationally (except the distillers).

Andi ,   Israel   (08.27.12)
Arab birth rates are falling , and Jewish birth rates are rising, the difference is less than 1/mother now. There is no demographic time bomb with regards to the Arabs potentially outnumbering Jews. However the increasing Jewish birth rate is mainly due to Haredim. That is the time bomb we need to worry about unless they start to join our economy and contribute.
11. increase of haredim is a good thing
david ,   new york   (08.27.12)
it will keep israel jewish and not allow the arabs to take over. don't worry about economy israel will do just fine with a larger percentage of haredim. haredim can make bundles of money if they want to: in the US i cant tell you how many haredi millionaires i know. if they become the majority, they also will be tolerant of secular culture: their reason for fighting is that they are resisting the secular attempts to have them assimilate out. once they are stronger, they will have to fight less. now, lets just survive iran and we'll all be fine.
12. Demographics is destiny - and not just within Israel
Raymond in DC ,   Washington, USA   (08.27.12)
Israel needs only look at Jerusalem to see what may lie in Israel's future. A haredi/Arab majority (making Israel's capital "non-Zionist") and the poorest city in the country after Bnei Brak. Other countries face their own demographic challenges. Iran's birthrate has crashed, meaning fewer workers and soldiers and a growing elderly population. Turkey's secular and liberal cohorts are being outbred by religiously conservative, and ethnic Kurds are outbreeding ethnic Turks. How about the West? ALL are showing birthrates below replacement levels, except for the US and Israel. Eastern Europe is especially bad. Russia could well be majority Muslim before the century is out, while immigration and birth rates will make much of Western Europe far more Muslim in coming decades. Or consider China, whose one-child policy has resulted in a shortage of females. Many call economics the "dismal science", but sometimes the same could be said for demography.

14. The real story" Secular Lifestyle Fails"
&TheWinnerIs..! ,   Jerusalem Israel   (08.27.12)
Left out in this equasion is that the National Relgious together with the Haredi make up already some 33% of the school children and will both grow much faster than the secular community . If you put the figures in only the Jewish populaton you are talking about already closer to 70% of the Israeli Jewish populaton. And just who is to "blame" ? The secular leaders of the past who advocated via the educational system and the mass media the adoption by the Israeli public of the most extreme of western lifestyle. Now its failure is coming back to haunt them. The good news the next generation of secular school kids will be getting a good dose of Judaism thanks to the reforms of the current Minister of Education . Against all odds the relgious public has one the day.
15. #5 & theWest is declining because of your outlook
ArrogancePersonified ,   Jerusalem Israel   (08.27.12)
How arrogant take a look in the mirror and see the declining brithrate in the West and see where its going to lead like so many living in their elitiste ivory towers waitng for the barbarians to break down the door . Say goodbye to the world youve known. If your lucky you wont live long enough to see it but he next generation will. Now call your immigrant houseboy to do your dirty work.

From reading your ignorant comments I can tell that you are poorly educated and not well travelled however I will do my best to set you staight on a few things. You say Ireland has critical problems, not really, nothing like those facing Israel. You say that our national debt level is worse than that of Greece. This is an utter fabrication. Of all the eurozone nations Greece is the only one that has a debt that is simply unmanagable and are the only ones likely to leave the eurozone. Fact. Your comparison is bogus. A 2011 census carried out in Ireland showed a population increase of 8.1% over the previous census of 2006. This is the highest population growth rate in Europe. To say that the Irish population is shrinking is to spew total garbage. check this out http://www.rte.ie/news/2011/0630/census.html Did you know that the Irish drink less beer per capita than the Germans, the Dutch or the Czechs, we drink less wine per head of population than the French or the Italians and we drink less spirits per capita than the Polish, the Scots or the Russians so stop throwing out petty old stereotypes just because you can't think of anything else to say. I would never stoop low enough to spew old stereotypes about the jews, god knows there are enough of them! Irelands economy grew by 2.4% in the first half of 2012. We are well on the road to recovery and things are looking up. Most major internationals set up their European headquarters in Ireland e.g. Microsoft, Intel, Facebook, Pfizer, Novartis etc. So trying to belittle the Irish economy is a bit of a non-runner. I appreciate a good argument but I dont appreciate spurious BS. You should try to make your points with a more intellectual approach. I hope my comments are informing to you and you will learn something.

18. Time for a new compromise
Vlad   (09.11.12)
When the state was first founded, Ben-Gurion made a compromise with religious Jews: The state would be run in a secular fashion, but would have limited religious laws, such as in marriage and divorce, and officially observe Jewish holidays. Now it's time for a new compromise. Perhaps they will all go into Haredi units, and only receive benefits for studying for a certain number of years. They will be allowed to set strict workplace rules, like no male-female mingling, etc. And to satisfy the growing majority, we can agree not to change any religious laws, no civil marriage, no buses on Shabbat, etc, while at the same time writing a constitution to prevent them from turning Israel into a sharia state.
