Try our traditional Sabbat dish. The "sholent or Hamin" there are two version; the Euro based on haricot beans and the Sepharad based on cheakpeas, both yummmy.
2. Ra'anana has best hummus in Israel (?)
Jonathan Plutchok ,   Ra'anana, Israel   (09.08.12)
I look forward to your coming columns, especially the one on humus. I have tasted well-regarded humus all over Israel, and I maintain that the best anywhere is right here in Ra'anana, at Tenami Humus Bar at 133 Achuza. I would love for you to try it and either confirm or refute my assessment.

nibor ,   israel   (09.08.12)
and 98% of the time I am too. Once in a while I will eat fish, and even rarer, a steak or chicken. For us there is not just a lot of food here, but absolutely delicious food: filafel, humus, tehina, cheeses, nuts, vegetables, health food alternatives and salads, wonderful salads. It wasn't always like this, but it is today.
4. here's a rec for Cafe Jeremiah in Tel Aviv
Yael ,   Tel Aviv   (09.08.12)
Cafe Jeremiah in Tel Aviv has the best salad ever -- go for salat hashuk (the Market Salad) and their house dressing is simply to die for. They've also got the best iced coffee I've come across in 8 years here.

Come to my house some Friday night-I will cook for you :)
6. Humus is Arab not Israeli
Ali   (09.08.12)
Humus, Coucous, falafel, tabooli are all Arab recipes. Stop stealing our cusine. We do not steal jewish recipes like dumplings, bagels and matza balls.
7. Humus is Arab not Israeli??????
Habib Seliman ,   New York, USA   (09.08.12)
Couscous in not 'Arab', it is Magrebi Berber, falafel is Egyptian not 'Arab', tabouli is from the land of the Cedars, the artificial country 'Lebanon' created by the Sykes- Picot agreement. Dumplings are 'French', Bagels are also Muslim " http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/45165318/ns/us_news-life/t/muslim-cab-drivers-save-jewish-bagel-shop/ ' and and my grandmother made delicious matza balls. Who appointed you as Mr. Chumus ? Eat and enjoy.
8. Photo of Jerusalem
(09.09.12)
Is there some reason why Israel always has to be represented by an ultra-Orthodox Jew? They're only a small segment of the population and certainly nothing like the average Israeli in any way, shape or form. And especially in this article, which doesn't even have anything to do with religion, the photo seems out of place.
9. Land of milk and hummus
Ziggy ,   NYC   (09.08.12)
Funny that I used the same term when I blogged about my visit... http://www.tripadvisor.com/ShowTopic-g293977-i1733-k5647530-Live_from_the_land_of_milk_and_hummus-Israel.html Best hummus we had was in Akko, Abu ghosh and Rachmo in Jerusalem. More details about the trip here.. http://eatingwithziggy.com
10. #6 This would be more convincing
Baruch ,   Israel/Houston   (09.09.12)
if the Palestinians had not sat on their hands, taught their children to hate, and thrown rockets instead of building businesses like those reviewed. Is it starting to make some sense now?

12. good restaurants in Israel
zeeva ,   NY USA   (09.09.12)
If you haven't already been there, try The Old Man and The Sea in Jaffa. The food is delicious, the atmosphere quite convivial and the fish is amazingly fresh as are the kebobs etc.
13. Israel will always be the land of חלב ודבש; but דב
Paqid Yirmeyahu ,   Ra'anana, Israel   (09.09.12)
דבש has been mistranslated. Archeologists, historians and other scientists realize that דבש in the Bible referred not to bee honey but to date syrup -- and the date palms remain plentiful in Israel.
14. meat in Israeli restaurants
lisa mukhtar ,   ramat gan Israel   (09.09.12)
You'll find fantastic steaks in "Rak Basar" restaurant on 14 Raul Wallenberg st. Ramat Hachayal, Tel-Aviv. Have enjoyed some great juicy steaks there with my family.
15. Generally speaking......
Froike ,   NY NY   (09.10.12)
Much of the Beef imported into Israel comes from Brasil and Argentina... Most, if not all is Grass Fed....which makes the meat much leaner than that of grain finished cattle. Furthermore, if you buy Kosher Meat..the Hindquarter, which contains some of the best cuts, is usually sold to non-Kosher consumers, as we are forbidden from eating the "Gid Hanasseh"--The Sciatic veins/nerves which are present in the hind quarter of the animal. While some Butcher's still know how to "Treybor" cut out the nerves and the blood supply; the meat is very expensive and not easy to obtain. If you want a great Steak you'll have to seek out grain fed Beef. Most of the Kosher Steaks available are ok but not the great steaks the author is seeking .Good Luck.
16. #1 Chulent...Yums
Mr. Guzzman ,   NY NY   (09.10.12)
A Chulent story: A Chassid and a Chiloni were in an elevator in Tel Aviv. The Chassid said to the Chiloni..."Oh you smell so nice"... The Chiloni replied," After Shave". At this time, the Chassid passed some wind. The Chiloni looked at him with disgust and said, "what kind of odor is that. The Chassid replied, "After Chulent".
17. suggestions Humus
Jacques ,   Herzilya, Israel   (09.10.12)
1. Tenami Humus, Ra'anana 2. Abu Hassan, Jaffa 3. Linna, Christian Quarter, Jerusalem 4. In the old city of Akko there is one place - the name eludes me - that always has a line out the door. 5. Abu Ghosh (by Jerusalem) has several quality restaurants. My experience with #1 & #2, get there before noon or they may run out.
